The protagonist crew of One Piece. Founded by Luffy in Foosha Village when he set sail in a dinghy after Shanks left him the straw hat. The crew grows incrementally across East Blue: Zoro joins at Shells Town (Ch. 6) as the first formal recruit; Nami alliance-joins after Orange Town (Ch. 21) under transactional terms; Usopp joins at Syrup Village (Ch. 41) via the “We’re a team, aren’t we?” recruitment-as-fait-accompli; Sanji joins at the Baratie (Ch. 68) as the fourth member (cook) — chapter title “The Fourth Person” canonizes the count. The crew’s five named roles (captain, swordsman, navigator, sniper, cook) are filled.
The crew’s first true ship — the Going Merry, a caravel designed by Merry and gifted by Kaya — is acquired in Ch. 41, closing the Ch 23 arc-opening goal (“acquire a proper vessel”). The dinghy-era (Chs 1-40) ends here; the Going Merry era begins.
Era: Post-Enies Lobby — the Thousand Sunny crew (Ch. 439)
Franky joins as the crew’s shipwright (“I’m the one to ask about the ship and its weapons… if anything breaks, I will fix it completely,” p. 12); the crew formally re-welcomes Nico Robin and Usopp (p. 19).
The crew’s new flagship, the Thousand Sunny, is christened and launched (Coup de Burst escape from Garp’s battleship).
Brook formally joins as the crew musician — the eighth crewmate to join under Luffy (the chapter title “Eighth Person”) — at the close of Thriller Bark; he pledges his life to Luffy (“From this day forth, I pledge my life to Captain Luffy”) and reveals his 33,000,000 bounty (pp. 7-9, 13). The crew sees off the Rolling Pirates — Franky gives them Brook’s repaired ghost ship — and sets sail for Fish-Man Island. (NB: Nico Robin backfilled into current_roster/members this chapter, correcting the long-flagged pre-existing omission.)
Era: Wano Country — Jinbei joins (Ch. 976 — present)
Jinbei formally joins as the crew’s helmsman — the tenth to join under Luffy, filling the crew’s last open functional role. He arrives at the Onigashima sea-approach (“come back alive, just as I promised, Luffy!!!”) and is captioned on-page as a Straw Hat (data box: “Straw Hat Crew Helmsman — Jimbei, First Son of the Sea — Bounty: 438,000,000,” p. 19). Ch. 977 (Wano): Jinbei reaches the crew at Wano, surfing the Sunny in as helmsman; celebrated as the newest member (formal toast deferred until after the Onigashima war). The crew clears the front-gate torii fortress for the alliance fleet — Luffy, Zoro (who found the guards drinking), Sanji, Nami, Robin, Franky, Brook, and Chopper wipe out the torii guards in a surprise charge (p. 8-13).
The crew reaches Egghead; half are dragged from the frigid sea by Lilith’s robot and menaced by the autonomous Sea Beast Weapons before Shaka takes an interest in them and orders them brought in (pp. 4-7).
They are openly recognized as the crew of the man “who just got made Emperor of the Sea” (Luffy, p. 5); Zoro’s bounty is cited at 1.111 billion and Nico Robin is called “the demon child” (p. 6). The crew came intending to make “demands” of Vegapunk (p. 6). See Vegapunk Satellites.

The four-way body-swap is reversed by Law’s “Chambres” (Franky, Nami, Chopper back in their own bodies); Sanji is left “absent” in Chopper’s body, off seeking the samurai (pp. 6–7).

Four captured — Nami, Sanji, Chopper, Franky are gassed, abducted to the island facility, and break out of their cell (through the shock-absorbing “Biscuits Room”) with a mob of captive giant children (pp. 2–12). Two on the Thousand Sunny — Nico Robin and Brook (left behind because the enemy mistook the skeleton for a corpse) deduce the abduction and fight off boarding leopard/giraffe centaurs bearing “CC”-branded baby Den Den Mushi (pp. 13–17).

Fish-Man Island — Luffy saved by Jinbei’s transfusion (Ch. 648)
Abandoned in the cemetery, the trio fight off the rising zombies (Usopp’s “Flaming Star” routs the swarm; Nami frees Usopp with the Clima-Tact) and flee to the mansion gate, reaching it at chapter’s end (Ch. 445).
Thriller Bark (Ch. 443) — Brook’s backstory + decline; the Sunny is lured inside the ghost island
Aboard the new ship the crew hosts the living skeleton Brook to dinner; he tells his backstory — death decades ago in this sea, revival via the Yomi-Yomi no Mi (Revive-Revive Fruit), and the theft of his shadow by an unnamed man (pp. 2-13).

A drifting barrel the crew picked up was bait: a giant gate slams shut and the Thousand Sunny is trapped inside the ghost-island Thriller Bark (“came all the way here from West Blue”, pp. 16-18). Nami: “I have a really bad feeling about this island!” Brook flees across the water back to his own ship, warning the crew to break out through the gate.

The crew is presented with their new ship (unnamed this chapter) — Franky’s completed “ship of dreams,” twice the size of the Going Merry, with a lion figurehead, lawn deck, slide, interior aquarium, kitchen, and a “soldier dock system” (pp. 5-8, 16-17).
They settle their position on taking Usopp back (“This is about doing what’s right… Are we all on the same page about Usopp?”, p. 2).
They react to their fresh post-Enies-Lobby wanted posters; total crew bounty stated at “over 600 million” (Navy HQ, pp. 3-4).

The whole crew is now ordered captured by Mayor Iceberg (“Capture the crew! Every last one of them!”, pp. 6, 11, relayed via secretary Kalifa) — the frame escalates from a Galley-La/government hunt into a mayor-sanctioned citywide manhunt. Meanwhile Luffy breaks into Iceberg’s mansion to confront the bedridden mayor, who insists he “saw Nico Robin with my own eyes.” Cross-link CP9, Iceberg, Galley-La Company.
Water Seven — framed as “the Straw Hat gang”; Luffy vs. Franky (Ch. 336)
The crew is publicly branded “the Straw Hat gang” and framed for the attack on Mayor Iceberg: a Galley-La Company aide reports Iceberg has named them (incl. Nico Robin) as the culprits and contacted the government, and wanted posters of Luffy (Monkey D. Luffy), Zoro (Roronoa Zolo), and Nico Robin circulate the island (pp. 10–11). Galley-La and the government begin hunting them. Meanwhile Luffy brawls Franky at Dock One (Franky revealed a cyborg); foremen Paulie and Rob Lucci arrive at the cliffhanger. Water Seven — Franky House raid + the Merry decision (Ch. 330)
Four members (Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Chopper) raid the Franky House to recover the stolen 200M and level the HQ (pp. 5–18); the money proves already spent by the boss, Franky (pp. 14, 18), who rode the Sea Train off-island. After the raid, Luffy decides to abandon the Going Merry (“We’ll say farewell to the Merry Go”, p. 19) — the seed of the arc’s crew fracture. Usopp is absent from the raid (referenced only, p. 7). The crew reaches Water Seven to repair the Going Merry; cashes the Skypiea gold for 300 million berries at the currency exchange (pp. 10–12). Zoro defends the Merry from the Franky Family bounty-hunter gang (pp. 2–5). Nico Robin has her first encounter with CP9 (pp. 8–9). The crew approaches the Galley-La Company (Dock 1, foreman Kaku) seeking Iceberg (pp. 15–17).

Ch. 305: Challenged to a three-coin Davy Back Fight by the Foxy Pirates (captain Foxy “the Silver Fox”, bounty 24M; warriors Porche and Hamburg). Luffy accepts (p. 14) without grasping that the stake is one of his own crew members; Nami and Tony Tony Chopper protest (“We’ll lose our companions!!”). The crew uses the South Bird compass-bird to navigate to the Knock-Up Stream launch point, then is launched toward Sky Island aboard the reinforced Going Merry (“flying version”), towed into the whirlpool’s center by the Saruyama Alliance (Ch. 235).
Jaya — Mock Town arrival (Ch. 222) — The Giant Novice — crew picks Jaya via Robin’s stolen Eternal Pose; reaches Mock Town
Era boundary — Jaya leg, six core members + Robin aboard the Going Merry. This chapter shows the six core members (Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper) plus Nico Robin (formal crew acceptance opened Ch. 218) sailing the post-wreckage aftermath and arriving at Jaya / Mock Town.
Robin produces the navigational lead (p. 5): reveals she stole an Eternal Pose to Jaya from “the ape’s ship” (the wreck) — the crew’s only lead toward a Sky Island. The Log-Pose-vs-Eternal-Pose tension is restated (pp. 6-8): the crew plans a short Jaya stop and departs before the Log Pose locks the next field.
Luffy + Zoro arrive at Mock Town’s edge (p. 20), unbothered by the lawless port. Cross-link Jaya (first named), Mock Town (lawless port), Bellamy Pirates (Mock Town antagonist crew introduced this chapter).
Recap-framed chapter. The crew is now a confirmed six-member-plus-Robin lineup on the Grand Line and has reached the Jaya leg. Crew departs Alabasta as a six-member crew (Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper) and sails away mourning Vivi (“We miss Vivi!”, p. 16). Zoro snaps them out of the crying with “…then you should’ve kidnapped her.” First on-page post-arc grief-then-recovery deck composition for an honorary-member departure (pre-loads every later nakama-farewell beat).

Alabasta — Departure at East Port Tamarisk; Vivi declines; X-mark farewell (Ch. 216)
The crew sails from Alabasta WITHOUT Vivi (Ch. 216). At East Port Tamarisk, with the Navy closing in, the crew nearly refuses to leave without her (Luffy: “She can’t just leave like that… Let’s drop anchor and go look for her!!”) before the broadcast confirms she is staying.
LOAD-BEARING — the X-mark fellowship-sign (Ch. 0157) pays off as the wordless farewell oath (Ch. 216 pp. 17-19). Because acknowledging Vivi openly would brand her a pirate-collaborator before the watching Navy, the crew cannot wave or shout; they silently raise X-marked left arms and Vivi answers with hers. Luffy: “No matter what happens from here on, our left arms will bear… the sign of our fellowship. LET’S SAIL!!” The crew remains six (Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper); Vivi is NOT added to the roster (she declines, p. 16).
