Christened the Thousand Sunny in Ch. 439 (pp. 5-7) after a running naming argument — “Thousand” for sailing the thousand seas, “Sunny” coined by Iceberg (Franky’s own rejected pitches: “Tiger Wolf Lion!”, “Bear! Polar Bear! Lion!”). The lion-head figurehead encodes the “king of beasts → King of the Pirates” theme (see New Ship Lion Figurehead King Of Beasts Theme).

• Lion-head figurehead — the “sun”/“sunflower” motif behind the name; the “king of beasts” → “King of the Pirates” theme.

Name etymology — weapon-systems

The Sunny’s two main-armament names debut in-story this chapter; both are keyed to the lion-figurehead identity (tag: technique/name-etymology):

• Gaon Cannon (ガオン砲 / Gaon-hō) — “Gaon” is the Japanese onomatopoeia ガオー (gaō) for a roar — specifically a lion’s/beast’s roar — + 砲 (hō, “cannon/artillery”). The weapon fires from the lion figurehead’s mouth, so the name literally reads as “the lion’s-roar cannon.” It is the loudest expression of the ship’s “king of beasts → King of the Pirates” lion motif (cf. New Ship Lion Figurehead King Of Beasts Theme). Surface pun, not a future-reveal encoding — no Foreshadowing entry. Confidence: high. • Chicken Voyage (チキンボヤージ / Chikin Boyāji) — a bilingual pun on “Bon Voyage” with “Bon” swapped for “chicken” (English idiom for cowardice / fleeing). Fitting: the maneuver is an emergency reverse that backs the ship away from danger — the Sunny “chickens out” / makes a cowardly retreat instead of a brave departure. • Coup de Burst (クー・ド・バースト) — French coup de ___ (“a blow/strike of ___”) + English “Burst,” matching Franky’s French-coded attack vocabulary (cf. Soldier Dock vehicles — post-timeskip refit

• Black Rhino FR-U IV / Black Rhino FR-U4 (クロサイ FR-U IV / Kurosai FR-U IV) — “Kurosai” (黒サイ / 黒犀) is literally “black rhinoceros,” describing the rhino-headed black tri-wheeled motorcycle (Channel 4). The model code “FR-U” is an abbreviation pun for フランキー将軍の腕 (Furankī Shōgun no Ude) = “General Franky’s Arm” — FR(anky) + U(de, 腕 = “arm”) — framing the bike as an extension/limb of Franky. The “IV”/“4” = Soldier Dock Channel 4 (the slot left “empty / reserved for future weapons” at the Ch. 444 dock reveal). Surface pun, not a future-reveal encoding — no Foreshadowing entry.
