- Name meaning
- 'Davy Back' ← Davy Jones, the malevolent sea-devil of English sailor-folklore whose 'locker' is the seabed grave of drowned sailors. The game's own on-page gloss (@0306 p.15) names 'Davy Jones, a pirate cursed by a demon said to live on the seafloor'; oaths are sworn 'upon Davy Jones, pirate of the deep sea,' and the inaugural coins 'promise him the soul of any pirate who betrays the game's spirit.' 'Davy BACK' = taking-back / taking-what-you-want from your enemies (the member-stealing wager). Resonates with the vault's D is Davy — the same Davy-Jones folklore Oda later canonizes as Davy D. Jones, deposed king of the Great Kingdom.
A pirate contest/“duel” in which crews compete and the winners can take members (and treasure/flags) from the losing crew.
What we know
- Ch. 304: The Foxy Pirates confront the Straw Hats and declare “What we want… is a duel” (p. 15). The contest is NOT yet named “Davy Back Fight” on-page this chapter — concept introduced, name first spoken @0305. Mechanics (the member-stealing wager) are not yet explained here.
- Ch. 305: Named on-page by Foxy (p. 14): “a three-coin Davy Back Fight run by orthodox rules.” Core stake: the loser of each contest must hand over one of their crew members to the winner (Nami/Chopper, p. 14: “We’ll lose our companions!!”). “Three-coin” denotes the number of rounds/contests at stake (three). The Foxy Pirates specialize in this game as a recruitment-by-conquest method. Luffy accepts the challenge without grasping the stakes (“If you want a match, I’ll take you on!!”).
- Ch. 306 (full rules dump): The Davy Back Fight is a “pirate game” in which crews wager their own members and flags; it originated “long ago on pirate island,” a pirate paradise (pp. 5–6).
- The winner of each game chooses one crew member from the loser’s ship, who must instantly swear allegiance to the enemy captain “upon Davy Jones, pirate of the deep sea” (p. 6).
- If the loser has no crew worth taking, the winner may instead strip the flag of its spirit — destroy the Jolly Roger (p. 6).
- The game begins only on the agreement of both ships’ captains, signaled by simultaneous gunfire; once a captain agrees, every crew member must participate (pp. 8–9).
- Fleeing a challenge is “the greatest shame a pirate can know” — an unwritten rule (p. 8).
- The Three Articles of Defeat (sworn by both captains, p. 13): (1) members/flags captured in a Davy Back Fight cannot be reclaimed except through another Davy Back Fight; (2) members chosen by the winner must immediately swear allegiance to the opponents’ captain; (3) a stolen flag may never be displayed again. Disobeying any article sends a pirate “to Davy Jones’s Locker as a disgrace to all pirates.”
- A contest can be multiple games (“three-coin game” = three games); each player may participate in only one game and the roster cannot be changed once set (p. 16).
- “Davy Back” is glossed as “taking what you want from your enemies,” from “Davy Jones,” a pirate cursed by a demon said to live on the seafloor (p. 15).
- This Davy Back Fight’s three games — Donut Race (obstacle boat race, one lap around the island along the shoreline; boats must be built only from two oars and three casks), Groggy Ring, and Combat (pp. 17–18).
- Ch. 307 (Donut Race rules in action, Round 1): the race is one full lap of a donut-shaped course around the island; start = goal (pp. 2–3).
- On-page stakes line (p. 2): “Win, and you’ll be celebrating — lose, and you’ll be sinking! Davy Back knows no mercy!!”
- All lethal weapons are permitted — “pistols, cannons, explosives, cutlasses” (p. 3).
- Outside support / attacks from non-participants (the audience) are legal — “Pirate competitions always have unexpected obstacles!!” (pp. 6–8); the Foxy crowd hurls boulders and cannon fire at the racers.
- “Those who flee in fear will be disgraced as pirates” (p. 3) — reaffirms the flight-is-shame unwritten rule.
- Boats this round: the Foxy Pirates’ Cutie Wagon vs the Straw Hats’ Barrel Tiger.
- Ch. 308 (Donut Race finale, Round 1 — unresolved): the race runs its obstacle gauntlet — Long Coral Reef (a coral/current “maze” of whirlpools), Long Ring Whirlpool, Long Cape (boats jump/“fly,” p. 10), and Long Ring Bamboo Grove Cape (giant-bamboo final stretch, p. 15). Captain Foxy attacks only with deception — Smoke Screen (“devilish interference,” p. 7), White-Out Blitz / “Coral Blind” (blinds the racers inside the reef, p. 7), Bogus Sign Blitz (fake course-marker, p. 12), and a run of Bogus Goal Blitz fake finish-lines (pp. 13–14). The Straw Hats counter via Nami’s current-reading (p. 8), Usopp’s last Impact Dial (pp. 9, 14), Nico Robin’s “Flower Shuriken” to fell the cape bamboo (p. 16), while the Cutie Wagon claws back with Capote+Monda’s “Twin Fishpower Engine” (p. 11). Both boats converge on the real goal in a dead heat — chapter ends “WHO WILL BE VICTORIOUS?!” (p. 18); Round 1 winner not revealed.
- Ch. 309 (Round 1 resolved; Round 2 begins): the Foxy Pirates WIN the Donut Race — Foxy slows the Straw Hats’ boat at the finish with his Noro Noro no Mi “Slow-Slow Beam” (pp. 4–5). The member-conscription stake is paid for the first time on-page: the winner chooses one member from the loser — Foxy chooses Chopper, who must swear allegiance and don a Foxy mask (pp. 9–12). The no-substitution rule is stated explicitly (“You can’t change your lineup!!”, p. 15) — the conscripted member cannot be replaced, so the Straw Hats enter Round 2 short-handed (2 players vs 3). Round 2 = the Groggy Ring (named p. 16): a ball game where the “ball” is a designated person.
- Ch. 311 (Round 2 — the Groggy Ring, “Rough Game”): the Straw Hats field Zoro and Sanji as the two “ball-men” — each locked into a spherical ball-helmet, serving as the ball; scoring means slamming the opposing ball-man into the ring (pp. 3, 4, 8). The opposing team is the Foxy Pirates’ “Groggy Monsters” (Hamburg / Pickles / Big Pan) (pp. 2, 14). The referee is corrupt and openly favors Foxy’s side: he ignores the Monsters’ bladed weapons and spiked shoes (“He just happened not to see it,” pp. 5–6) but issues a yellow card to Sanji for “attacking the ref,” warning the next is a red card / ejection (pp. 6–7). Restated stake: a Groggy Ring win = the Foxy team’s “second victory,” letting them conscript a second Straw Hat (“Now they can take their time in getting the ball-man… to the ring — or should I say the coffin?!” pp. 14–15). Round-2 cliffhanger: a battered Zoro tells Sanji “Lend me a hand for ten seconds. That should be enough time.” (p. 15) — a Zoro–Sanji combo setup. The Monsters dominate with the Small/Medium/Large “size attack” and Hamburg’s “Punk Spike.”
- Ch. 310 (Round 2 — the Groggy Ring, in action): the second contest’s rules play out on the field —
- Two players per team are designated “ball-men” and wear a ball marker on their heads; the attacking ball-man starts in the opponents’ midfield circle (p. 5).
- Win condition: force the opposing ball-man’s head into the opposite midfield ring (pp. 5, 9–10). No time limit; the first goal wins (p. 10).
- Weapons are banned (“this is a ball game, you can’t have weapons!! Lose the swords!” — p. 8), but interference / tackling is allowed (“interfering is allowed in this game too” — p. 6). So Zoro plays swordless.
- Teams: Foxy’s “Groggy Monsters” (Hamburg / Pickles / Big Pan) vs the Straw Hats’ Zoro and Sanji (Sanji = ball-man). The Groggy Monsters dominate the opening exchanges; their first goal attempt (a “Hamburger Dunk” of Sanji) is denied when Zoro & Sanji refuse to let each other be involved and break up the play themselves (pp. 18–20).
- Ch. 312 (Groggy Ring climax, Round 2 — “GOAL!!”): the Straw Hats score the winning goal (“GOOOAAALLL!!”, pp. 16–19), overturning the “obvious” loss. (Mid-round chapters 0308–0311 already synthesized above; the round runs 0309→0312.)
- Team rosters confirmed in play: Team Straw Hat = Zoro (runner) + Sanji (the “ball”); Foxy’s Groggy Monsters = Big Pan / “Big Bun” (fish-giant) + Pickles (twin spinning swords) + Hamburg (pp. 2–3, 13–14).
- A “No swords” restriction binds Zoro’s runner role (“No swords style…”, p. 11) — he must grapple, not cut.
- The Groggy Monsters’ team-finisher is the three-step “Monster Burger” (pp. 4–6): Pickles dices (“like the cheese,” “diced like green lettuce”), Big Pan smashes (“two slices of big bun”), Hamburg minces — “the decisively lethal, terminally terrible three-step deadly weapon attack.”
- Officiating can be sabotaged both ways: Nico Robin lands a direct Hana-Hana strike on the referee while Nami pickpockets his whistle (“an old habit”), suppressing a red-card infraction call so Team Straw Hat can keep fighting (pp. 14–15) — the game’s “anything goes / outside interference legal” ethos cuts toward the protagonists for once. Cross-link the Zoro and Sanji Ten-Second Combination payoff: Sanji launches Big Pan airborne (“Armée de l’Air”) and Zoro slams him into the goal ring for the score.
- Ch. 313 (Round 2 result + Round 3 / Combat rules dump):
- Round 2 (Groggy Ring) resolves as a Straw Hat win; as second-round victors they exercise the prize-right to take a Foxy member (and reclaim Chopper) — first time the member-stealing wager resolves for the protagonists (pp. 5–9).
- Round 3 = Combat: a one-on-one duel between the two captains (pp. 10–11), “the mother of all contests.”
- New final-round stake: “Any crew member acquired in the final match can’t be won back” (p. 10) — stricter than the earlier Articles, which allowed reclamation through another Davy Back Fight.
- Battlefield-selection mechanic: the two participants spin a cannon loaded with a steel ball together; the direction it points at its “natural stop” fires the ball, and the field is the 50-meter-radius circle (100-meter circumference) centered where the ball lands (pp. 12–13). (Here it lands beside the captain’s flagship the Sexy Foxy — flagged on-page as not genuinely “by chance.”)
- Combat rules (p. 13): (1) only the two combatants may enter the circle; (2) any weapon found inside the circle may be used; (3) you win by forcing your opponent out of the circle; (4) “above and under the ship do not count as being outside the circle.”
- Forfeit angle (Nami’s “peanut tactic”): because Round 3 is captain-vs-captain combat, a crew whose captain is taken in an earlier round would be unable to field a Round-3 fighter and would forfeit — floated by Nami as a strategy and decried by spectators as “against pirate ethics” (pp. 6–8). Recorded as a consequence of the rules, not a new rule.
- Ch. 314 (Round 3 — Combat, in action): the captains’ one-on-one duel is fought across both decks of Foxy’s ship, the Sexy Foxy (“the whole ship is our battlefield”), with no time limit; lose by being knocked outside the 100-meter ring (pp. 5–7). Confirms the @0313 rule that “any weapon found inside the circle may be used” — Foxy exploits it by pre-stashing cannonballs and bombs aboard his own ship and weaponizing them with his slow-beam. The irreversible-prize rule from @0313 (a member won in the final match can never be reclaimed) raises the stakes of the Luffy-vs-Foxy outcome.
- Ch. 315 (Combat round, Round 3 in action): the duel is fought across and then inside Foxy’s ship the Sexy Foxy — the cannon-shot field encloses the whole vessel, so deck and interior are both legal battlefield (pp. 2, 11–12). Confirms two earlier rules in play: (a) any weapon inside the circle may be used — Foxy uses his own ship’s Face Bombs, gun-deck cannons, spike rooms, trap doors, and a treadmill hall (pp. 2–14); (b) “above and under the ship do not count as being outside the circle,” so the below-deck chase stays in-bounds. The MC cannot enter the below-deck field (“Even I, the commentator, cannot enter!” — Itomimizu, p. 11); win condition remains forcing the opponent out / into the sea (the crowd: “if he falls into the sea he’ll lose!!”, p. 10).
- Ch. 316 (Round 3 / Combat, continuing below deck): the captains’ duel runs inside Foxy’s ship the Sexy Foxy — invisible to the audience, who judge it only by the ship shaking and the cheers (pp. 11–13). Foxy fights with his Noro Noro no Mi (Slow-Slow Beam, now shown to reflect off mirrors), a mechanical-contraption arena (Gorilla Puncher #13, Mirror Racket, Slowpoke Ball Demon Coach), and a “Slow-Slow Beam Sword.” The crowd grumbles the beam “must be against the rules” (p. 18), but the Ch. 313 combat rule — “any weapons found within that circle may be used” — appears broad enough to cover it (noted as resonance, not asserted). Luffy refuses to be forced out / down because the final-match prize is irreversible (p. 19). Round still unresolved at chapter end (resolves Ch. 317). (Last chapter of Vol. 33.)
- Ch. 317 (Combat / Round 3 conclusion): the captains’ one-on-one duel ends in a Luffy KO win, completing the three-game Davy Back Fight (Donut Race → Groggy Ring → Combat). The Straw Hats win the contest outright.
- Confirms the in-combat use of all weapons “found within the circle” rule from Ch. 313 — Luffy weaponizes the Sexy Foxy’s below-deck mirror against Foxy (p. 17), reflecting Foxy’s own Slow-Slow Beam back onto him (pp. 16–18).
- The rigged “by-chance” battlefield beside Foxy’s own ship (Ch. 313) backfires: Luffy raids Foxy’s cabin for the winning mirror.
- Luffy lands an accumulated rush at the instant the beam’s ~30-second slow expires (crowd counts down to “ZERO!!”, pp. 18–22) — the Noro Noro no Mi Chekhov rulebook pays off against its own user. Davy Back Fight won by the Straw Hats (final disposition / whether Luffy takes a prize resolves forward @0318 “Closure”).
- Ch. 318 (conclusion): the three-coin Davy Back Fight ends. In the Combat round (Round 3), Luffy knocks Foxy out of the ring into the sea, breaking Foxy’s “920 consecutive wins” record (pp. 2–6). As victor, Luffy exercises the prize-rule established Ch. 306 — choose one crew member OR strip the loser’s flag — and elects to take the Foxy Pirates’ Jolly Roger rather than a crew member (pp. 9–11). He then redraws a replacement flag so the Foxy crew can still legally put to sea (pp. 12–13) — a small softening of the Three-Articles rule that a stripped flag may never be displayed again. Straw Hats declared victors; the Foxy Pirates depart vowing revenge (p. 14).
Etymology
“Davy Back” derives from Davy Jones — the malevolent sea-devil of English sailor-folklore. Davy Jones’s Locker is the proverbial grave at the bottom of the sea where drowned sailors and sunken ships come to rest (the phrase is attested in print from 1726, in a voyage-narrative attributed to Daniel Defoe; the etymology of the folklore name is itself contested — most plausibly fusing Saint David of Wales, invoked by Welsh sailors, with the Biblical Jonah).
Oda makes the link explicit on-page @ Ch. 306:
- The game is glossed (p. 15) as “taking what you want from your enemies,” from “Davy Jones,” a pirate cursed by a demon said to live on the seafloor.
- The Three Articles of Defeat are sworn “upon Davy Jones, pirate of the deep sea”; breaking them sends a pirate “to Davy Jones’s Locker as a disgrace to all pirates” (the in-world death-euphemism in action).
- The inaugural coins thrown off the coast (one per game) are “a tribute that not only honors Davy Jones, but symbolically promises him the soul of any pirate who betrays the game’s spirit” (per One Piece Wiki).
Cross-link — D is Davy (conservative): the same Davy-Jones folklore is later canonized (Ch. 1162–1164) as Davy D. Jones, the deposed king of the Great Kingdom — the proposed source of the “D.” initial. The Davy Back Fight is thus an early, low-key seeding of Davy Jones as load-bearing in-world vocabulary, the same technique catalogued in Davy Jones - name foreshadows founding king of the Great Kingdom. It is later revealed (Ch. 1155) that Rocks (Rocks D. Xebec) — a D.-bearer — built his crew via Davy Back Fights, tightening the game→Davy-Jones→D. resonance. (Recorded as resonance, not asserted as authorial proof.)
Chronology / structure
- Concept introduced @ Ch. 304 (the Foxy Pirates’ demanded “duel”).
- Name + stakes first stated on-page @ Ch. 305 (p. 14): “three-coin Davy Back Fight,” loser forfeits a crew member.
- Full rules + the three-game lineup dumped @ Ch. 306; Round 1 = the Donut Race begins (Porche vs Nami/Usopp/Robin).
- Round 1 (Donut Race) runs on-page @ Ch. 307 — donut-shaped lap course (start = goal), all weapons + legal “outside support” from the audience; the Foxy crew leads with Fish-Man Karate (Capote) and an unnamed Devil-Fruit power (Porche).
- Round 1 (Donut Race) finale runs on-page @ Ch. 308 through the obstacle terrain (Long Coral Reef → Long Ring Whirlpool → Long Cape → Long Ring Bamboo Grove Cape); ends UNRESOLVED on a cliffhanger (winner forward).
- Round 1 (Donut Race) concluded @ Ch. 309 (Foxy wins via Noro Noro no Mi; Chopper conscripted); Round 2 (the Groggy Ring) begins @ Ch. 309 — Zoro + Sanji (Sanji as the “ball”) vs the Groggy Monsters (Hamburg / Pickles / Big Pan).
- Round 2 (the Groggy Ring) runs on-page @ Ch. 310 — opening exchanges; the Groggy Monsters’ first goal attempt is denied by Zoro & Sanji’s mutual refusal to cooperate (no winner yet this chapter).
- Round 2 (Groggy Ring) continues @ Ch. 311 (“Rough Game”) — Zoro & Sanji as ball-men vs the Groggy Monsters (Hamburg, Big Pan, Pickles, and the slippery fish-man); a bought referee enforces against the Straw Hats (ignores the Monsters’ weapons; yellow-cards Sanji); the Monsters dominate with the Small/Medium/Large “size attack” and Hamburg’s “Punk Spike.” Cliffhanger: Zoro asks Sanji for “ten seconds” of cooperation (Zoro and Sanji Ten-Second Combination).
- Round 2 (Groggy Ring) climaxes on-page @ Ch. 312 (“GOAL!!”): Team Straw Hat (Zoro + ball-Sanji) overturns the “obvious” loss vs the Groggy Monsters and scores the winning goal into the ring (“GOOOAAALLL!!”); Nico Robin & Nami KO/disable the corrupt referee to suppress a red-card call. The Combat round still lies ahead.
- Round 2 (Groggy Ring) result confirmed + Round 3 (Combat) opens on-page @ Ch. 313 (“Main Event”): the Straw Hats reclaim Chopper as the Round-2 prize (first protagonist-favorable wager resolution); Foxy declares Round 3 = Combat (captain-vs-captain duel) with the irreversible-prize rule and the steel-ball battlefield-randomizer (50m-radius circle); Luffy vs Foxy begins.
- Round 3 (Combat) runs on-page @ Ch. 314 — Luffy vs Foxy aboard the Sexy Foxy; Foxy’s slow-beam dominates and the round ends on an apparent rigged-barrage KO of Luffy (comeback forward).
- Round 3 (Combat) continues @ Ch. 315 — Luffy vs Foxy inside the Sexy Foxy; Foxy fights via the Noro Noro no Mi Slow-Slow Beam + a maze of one-sided traps (the home-field “by chance” rigging set up @0313 paying off in full), debuting the “Nine-Tails Rush” combo (p. 18); cliffhanger on a sealed door Foxy has herded Luffy toward.
- Round 3 (Combat) continues @ Ch. 316 — Luffy vs Foxy below deck on the Sexy Foxy; new mirror-reflection mechanic for the Slow-Slow Beam (“Mirror Racket”) + Gorilla Puncher #13 trap-wall + a “Slow-Slow Beam Sword” + the “Megaton Nine-Tails Rush”; Luffy keeps rising. Round still unresolved at the close of Vol. 33; the K.O. lands Ch. 317.
- Round 3 (Combat) concludes on-page @ Ch. 317 (“K.O.”) — Luffy KOs Foxy by reflecting the Slow-Slow Beam back with a mirror hidden in his afro (the Sexy Foxy’s below-deck cabin mirror), then landing an accumulated rush at the instant the beam’s ~30-second slow expires (crowd countdown to “ZERO!!”). The Davy Back Fight is won by the Straw Hats (all three games swept; Foxy’s 920-match streak ended).
- Prize cascade per game = 1 conscripted crew member (or flag destruction) → contest = best across N games → losers’ allegiance is irreversible except by re-challenge.
Open questions about this topic
- How do the three individual contests actually play out? (Donut Race resolved @0309 — Foxy won; the Groggy Ring resolved @0312/0313 — Straw Hats won, Chopper reclaimed; the Combat (Round 3) of Luffy vs Foxy resolved @0317 — Luffy KOs Foxy; the Straw Hats win.)
- Outcome of the Straw Hats’ three games; whether/which crew member is lost. RESOLVED @0318 (“Closure”): all three games won; the Davy Back Fight is won by the Straw Hats. (Chopper conscripted @0309 as the Donut-Race spoils — reclaimed @0313 as the Groggy-Ring spoils; no Straw Hat is lost.) As victor, Luffy takes the Foxy Pirates’ Jolly Roger (not a crew member) @0318, then draws them a replacement flag so they can still sail.
