Summary

Three days at sea after leaving Long Ring Long Land (the Merry had anchored four days while Luffy and Robin recovered), the Straw Hats are enjoying calm, summer-like weather. Robin, fully recovered, thanks Chopper (“Thank you, Doctor”) and asks Sanji for coffee; the mood is light, with Luffy doing his “Frozen Luffy” impression of his near-death on the island. The crew is also chasing a 100-meter giant frog — a beast Sanji has dubbed “pommes paille / Paille” and plans to cook — that is doing the freestyle crawl across the sea, covered in wounds and swimming hard toward a distant lighthouse. The chase brings them to Shift Station, where an enormous black steam-belching machine suddenly crosses in front of the Merry: the Puffing Tom, a sea train running on tracks laid below the surface of the ocean, its lead car marked “WATER 7.” The frog — named Yokozuna — had been bodily challenging the train to a contest of strength. At the station the crew meets Kokoro, the boozy old stationmaster, her grandchild Chimney, and Chimney’s pet Gonbe (“a cat — actually a rabbit”). Kokoro explains the sea train: it uses a steam engine to rotate paddles over submerged tracks, hauls boats and delivers mail, and circles the same islands every day. She tells them the train came from Blue Station on Water Seven, the bustling “City of Water” famed for the best shipwrights in the world, where ships are built under commission by the World Government itself. Hearing this, Luffy declares the crew is going to Water Seven — “and we’ll find a carpenter to join our crew! All right, it’s decided! We’re going!”
