Chapter 327: Shipbuilding Town

Summary

The Straw Hats arrive at Galley-La Company’s Dock One to have the Going Merry assessed. In the cold open, shipwright Paulie is being dragged by the ear and humiliated by Rob Lucci — a Galley-La “sawyer and treenail foreman” — over a gambling debt; Lucci’s words actually come from his pigeon, Hattori, perched on his shoulder (“ventriloquism”). The crew learns the Galley-La shipwrights doubled as the muscle who recovered their stolen 200 million berries from the Franky Family (“We got him, Mr. Iceberg”); the workmen warn that the Family’s leader, Franky, “stays in the shadows” and “don’t underestimate Franky.” A running comedy plays out: Luffy, Usopp and Nami are baffled by the talking pigeon; Paulie throws fits over Kalifa, Iceberg’s secretary, “wearing scandalous clothes.” Mr. Iceberg arrives at the dock to cheers from the workmen, and Kalifa narrates his legend — long ago Water Seven’s shipbuilding industry was new and seven companies competed; Iceberg’s brilliance and passion combined all seven into one and, five years ago, founded the Galley-La Company. Luffy, awed by the giant galleon under construction and the demi-culverin cannons, openly tries to recruit a shipwright (“Wanna be a pirate with me?”) and offers to pay any price to fix and upgrade the Merry. Kaku returns from inspecting the ship — and delivers the chapter’s gut-punch: the Going Merry’s keel is damaged beyond repair. Even with Galley-La’s skills the ship “can never sail again.” The chapter closes on a forlorn shot of the sheep figurehead.

• Rob Lucci is introduced — a Galley-La Company “Sawyer and Treenail Foreman” — who appears bullying Paulie over money; his speech is actually performed via Hattori, his pigeon (ventriloquism gag) (pp. 3, 11). • The Galley-La shipwrights are also the company’s security force — they captured the Franky Family henchmen and recovered the crew’s stolen 200 million berries (“We got him, Mr. Iceberg.” / “Thanks, Lucci.”) (pp. 4, 6).
