The chapter is named after **Drum Castle** — the mountain-top fortress of Dr. Kureha which the Straw Hats reached at the close of Ch. 139. The first chapter set inside Drum Castle; the *castle of snow* phrasing canonizes that Kureha's mountain-top redoubt is itself filled with snow (corridors, frozen-over unused rooms, snowdrifts in the great hall) — the castle is *kingless* and *uninhabited* enough that the weather lives inside it (pp. 6-8, 15).

**Chopper is a Devil Fruit user** (p. 13). Kureha's backstory exposition explicitly states: *'Then one day... Straw Hat Recruitment Pattern
**Drum Castle's great hall is itself a snow-bird sanctuary** (pp. 15-17). Luffy and Sanji find the castle's main door open (*'So this is where all the cold air's coming from.'*); when they try to close it Chopper attacks them — *'DON'T TOUCH THAT DOOR!!! NO!!!'* — because outside on a snow-ledge is a **nest of baby snow-birds** (*'BABY SNOW-BIRDS!!'*, p. 17) who would fall if the door closed. *'If the door closes, they'll fall.'* First on-page beat of Chopper protecting non-humans (and the reveal that Drum Castle's open-door-policy serves an ecological purpose). The doctor-instinct directed at injured/orphaned creatures — wardrobe-foreshadow for the medical vocation.
**Dr. Kureha — vain about her age (the 130s, not the 140s)** (p. 4). Kureha hits Nami with a fan-whap (*WHAP!!*) for calling her *'old lady'* / *'old crone'* — *'WATCH YOUR MOUTH!!! **Dr. Kureha disclaims interest in the sea, in pirates, in adventure** (p. 5). Kureha to Luffy's recruitment-pitch: *'I've no time for such nonsense. I have no interest in the sea.'* / *'You want me to become a pirate?? Don't be ridiculous!!'* — flatly rejects the Straw Hat invitation. **Nami fan-greets the doctor with familiarity** (pp. 4, 9-10). Summary

Chopper’s backstory — Kureha’s exposition (pp. 13-14): Kureha narrates Chopper’s origin to Nami. ‘When he was born… his parents rejected him because of the way he looked.’ / ‘Because he had a blue nose!!!’ / ‘Even when he was little, he had to walk alone, far behind the rest of the herd… but he longed for companionship.’ / ‘Then one day… HE ATE THE DEVIL FRUIT. The other reindeer laughed and called him names, and treated him like a freak… and finally cast him out.’ Nami: ‘How cruel…’ Kureha: ‘He looked nothing like a normal reindeer anymore… To them, he was some strange blue-nosed monster.’ / ‘So he decided to go live with the humans in their village. The main door’s wide open!’ / ‘So this is where all the cold air’s coming from.’ They reach for the door — Chopper bursts in (GRRR!!): ‘DON’T TOUCH THAT DOOR!!! NO!!!’ / ‘Didn’t you hear…’ / ‘Hey!!’ Sanji to Luffy: ‘Before we freeze. Ignore that guy and close it!’ / ‘R-right!’ — Chopper transforms with a DOOOMP!! into a large bipedal humanoid form (towering, muscular, antlered, top-hatted): ’…WHAT I SAID!!!?’ (SNAP! The baby snow-birds (p. 17): Chopper leads them out — KRUNCH KRUNCH across the snowy ledge — to a small alcove where there’s a nest of ‘BABY SNOW-BIRDS!!’ peeping (PEEP PEEP PEEP). Luffy realizes: ‘So that’s why it has to stay open.’ Sanji: ‘If the door closes, they’ll fall.’ The open-door policy of Drum Castle serves an ecological purpose — Chopper protects the orphaned snow-birds.

Comedy beat — outside in the cold (p. 18): Luffy and Sanji are back outside (SHWOOO TMP TMP TMP): ‘WAH! It’s freezing!!!’ Sanji: ‘MONSTER!!!’ (DOOM!!) / ‘Huh? Yeah, and it was standing on two feet!!’ / ‘Huh? Hold on a minute, did that thing just speak!?’ / ‘First it was little, then it… turned into a big monster!’ / ‘What was that thing? It looked like a reindeer… but it was walking on two legs…’ — the two have only just realized that Chopper is both a sentient reindeer and a Devil Fruit user.

Kureha’s exposition: born blue-nosed and rejected by his parents, walking far behind the herd, ate the Devil Fruit, cast out by the other reindeer as ‘a strange blue-nosed monster’, tried to live with humans and was driven off with gunfire (‘IT’S THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN!!!’). ‘Chopper’s been alone his whole life.’ Foundational backstory seed: the rejected-from-both-worlds liminal figure who only finds family on the Straw Hat ship. The Ch. 134 silent introduction of the blue-nosed reindeer-figure in the X-cross top hat is canonically paid off in Ch. 140. Open questions raised

What is the name of Chopper’s Devil Fruit? Kureha names the mechanism (‘He ate the Devil Fruit’) but not the fruit. (Forward-canon: the Hito Hito no Mi / Human-Human Fruit, the Zoan that turns animals into humans.)
What classification is Chopper’s Devil Fruit? This chapter shows an animal eats fruit → becomes humanoid effect that doesn’t fit the existing Paramecia archetype (Luffy’s rubber-body, Buggy’s chop-chop, Mr. 3’s wax). The fruit must be a new class.
How many forms can Chopper take? The chapter shows two — his small bipedal form and a Heavy Point-like humanoid — but they appear arbitrarily triggered. Is the transformation a single binary, a spectrum, or discrete forms?
Who taught Chopper medicine? Chopper diagnoses Nami with technical accuracy (‘keschia’s bacteria’, ‘antibiotic injections’) and uses a doctor’s hat — but Kureha is the country’s only doctor and clearly knows him intimately. Did Kureha train Chopper, or did someone before her? (Forward-canon: the quack doctor Hiriluk, Chopper’s father-figure, is the answer the next chapter or two will deliver.)
Will Chopper join the crew? Recruitment is offered (p. 10), declined (‘I’M A REINDEER!! I CAN’T LIVE WITH HUMANS!!!’), and Kureha names the obstacle as Chopper’s heart-wound (p. 12). The recruitment-arc is in motion but unresolved.
What is Kureha’s relationship to Chopper? She calls him ‘my reindeer’ (p. 12), endorses the recruitment, and knows his entire backstory — but the chapter does not yet show how she came to take him in or who taught her about him.
Why does Drum Castle have a great hall full of snow? The chapter establishes Chopper protects baby snow-birds on the ledge (p. 17) — but is the snow-filled castle merely Kureha’s neglect, or a deliberate ecological design? The castle without a king has become a wildlife refuge.
