Summit War — turns back from the Calm Belt (Ch. 525)

• Prodded offshore by Alvida, the crew weighs storming the Calm Belt to rescue Buggy from Impel Down but turns back when a crewmate commandeers the ship Big Top and refuses to “sail into certain death” (pp. 5-7). They tearfully bid Buggy farewell, believing he’ll be executed; they cite his unfinished quest for Captain John’s long-lost treasure island. Mohji, Cabaji and the lion Richie are present.

Era: Buggy’s Delivery operation (Ch. 803)

• The crew now fronts Buggy’s Delivery, a Warlord-legalized pirate-mercenary dispatch business with a near-monopoly on “the fightin’ business” now that Doflamingo no longer arms the underworld (pp. 10-11). Employed five giant mercenaries — Hajrudin being the Class-S earner, who quits the company this chapter to follow Luffy. (Buggy’s last_appearance advances to 0803; crew roster beat — current_roster unchanged.)

Origin statement (Ch. 19)

• Buggy Pirates founding-statement is uttered as a teenager on Roger’s deck (Ch.19 p.16): “I’ll put together the cruelest pirate crew ever and steal more treasure!!” The entire later Buggy Pirates organization (and, by extension, Cross Guild) is rhetorically rooted in this one teenage outburst, immediately following the Devil Fruit theft.

Volume-bonus Rough Sketch lineup (Ch. 23)

Ch 23 page 20 publishes a paratext lineup of the Buggy Pirates roster as a coordinated circus troupe, with literal circus-discipline labels:

• Cabaji the Acrobat — confirmed canon member.
• “Zolo the Swordsman” — non-canon scrapped/alternate Buggy-Pirate design; not Roronoa Zoro despite the romanization collision. Glasses, plain shirt, single katana, short dark hair.
• Hachi the Messenger — a bird; non-canon (name reuse with the later Arlong-arc fishman Hachi).
• Mohji the Animal Trainer with Richie the lion — confirmed canon members.

The lineup ratifies the Buggy Crew As Circus reading (circus-discipline assignment grammar) and doubles as a scrapped-design archive of Buggy-Pirate roster slots that did not enter canon. Reading: Oda uses the volume-bonus channel for both forward-preview and design-pruning publication.

Notable events

• Ch. 8 — First appearance: mooks shipwrecked by Nami’s fake-castaway scam, captain name-dropped, Jolly Roger and flagship shown on-page in Orange Town. The crew’s signature Grand Line Map is stolen by Nami mid-chapter.
• Ch. 9 — Captain first appears physically. Crew shown holding a tavern on Orange Town’s main street as Buggy’s base. Crew dialogue confirms Buggy is a Devil Fruit user (“He’s using the power of the fruit of the devil!”, page 6). Operates by cannon-bombardment: established (page 9) that Buggy’s cannons blew an unnamed village “to smithereens” after kids mocked his nose. The nose taboo as crew-internal hazard is on-page (pages 4-5) — crewmen are killed/threatened for accidental nose-references. Accepts Nami’s apparent defection at face value (pages 19-20). Zoro arrives at the crew’s dock at chapter end demanding to be taken to Buggy.
• Ch. 10 — The Drinker Pub bender establishes the tavern as their official tavern HQ. Buggy invites Nami into the inner circle on the strength of a drinking-contest win — loyalty-by-flattery rather than loyalty-by-vetting (an exploitable crew weakness Nami immediately weaponizes). Buggy Balls introduced as their signature ordnance: cannonballs amplified by Buggy’s Devil Fruit, capable of leveling a city block per shot. Buggy uses loyalty-test by-violence — demands Nami execute the caged Luffy to “prove your loyalty.” Crew confronts Zoro in the streets at chapter end; four mooks lose their swung weapons to Zolo’s sheathed blade in a single block.
• Ch. 11 — Orange Town plaza brawl: four crew mooks dropped by Zoro in a single sword-flash (p. 2). Crew witnesses the first on-page demonstration of Buggy’s Bara Bara no Mi; reacts with delight (“Captain Buggy, you’re the greatest! Finish him! Finish him!”, p. 7). At chapter end the crew is scattered across the wrecked Orange Town courtyard, with Buggy declaring war on the three escapees. Volume-bonus page (p. 20, “One Piece Rough Sketch!”) previews a beast-tamer subordinate, Mōji / Mohji, with a lion pet (Richie) — pre-canon design material for an upcoming Buggy Pirates first-mate-tier character. • Ch. 12 — Mohji the Lion Tamer (First Mate) and his lion Richie introduced (page 3). Buggy delegates the pursuit of the escaped Straw Hat trio to Mohji, who tracks them through the streets on Richie’s back. Mohji claims animal-control as a power (“there’s not an animal alive that I can’t control”, page 18) — first articulation of a beast-control capability on the Buggy crew (Devil Fruit status not on-page). Mohji KO’s Luffy through two buildings with Richie’s paw-strike (pages 19-20); rides off to hunt Zolo, thinking Luffy dead. Officer-tier vanity-trait gag introduced (page 17): Mohji rages “COSTUME!? THIS IS MY HAIR!!!” — direct structural cognate of Buggy’s nose taboo (Ch. 9). Confirms over-reaction-to-vanity-trait as a crew-wide theme. Crew now established as a military-parody organization with rally calls and officer ranks (page 2).
• Ch. 13 — Mohji + Richie defeated by Luffy at the destroyed Pet Food shop. Mohji first on-page named in Buggy-crew dialogue (page 19). Buggy orders the Buggy-Balls bombardment of Orange Town (page 19): “Ready my special Buggy Balls!!! … We’re going to light up this town!! Until there’s nothing left!!!” — escalation from Ch 10 demonstration to town-erasure deployment. Confirms Buggy Balls are the crew’s standing strategic threat against any town that resists.
• Ch. 14 — Mohji explicitly named “First Mate” on-page (page 2, mook: “AHOY! First Mate Mohji’s back!”); returns to the Drinker Pub HQ beaten unconscious after the off-page fight with Luffy. Buggy mishears Mohji’s warning “the rub-(ber man)” as “rub” and concludes Luffy is a “masseur” — comedy reputation-fragility beat (“BEATEN BY A MASSEUR! If this gets out, our reputation’s scuttled!”, page 3). Crew fires a second Buggy Ball salvo on the town (page 10); lands on Mayor Boodle’s house (where Zolo had been sleeping; Zolo survives intact). At chapter close Mayor Boodle confronts Buggy at the Drinker Pub door alone with a spear (“WHO DARES?” — page 18); Luffy/Zolo/Nami trio arriving behind.
• Ch. 15 — Cabaji the Acrobat introduced and captioned as “Buggy’s second mate” (page 4). Buggy demonstrates his Devil Fruit power on-page for the first time (page 7) by floating on detached feet. The crew’s signature Buggy Ball is bounced back onto their own position by Luffy’s Gum-Gum Balloon (pages 17-19), detonating among them — first on-page reversal of their signature ordnance. The crew’s officer-hierarchy is legible for the first time (captain → second mate). End of chapter: Buggy crew scattered/wounded by their own Buggy Ball, with the Straw Hat trio (Luffy + Zoro + Nami) ready to mop up.
• Ch. 16 — The officer chart fills in: Mohji (First Mate) and Cabaji (Second Mate) named on-page; Richie (Mohji’s lion) named on-page. Crew aesthetic crystallizes as circus (clown captain + beast-tamer first-mate + acrobat second-mate). Mohji explains to Buggy that Luffy is a DF user “just like you” — first peer-class DF recognition within the crew. Buggy Balls confirmed non-effective vs. rubber-class DF defense. Cabaji opens a duel against Zoro and gets the upper hand by exploiting Zoro’s pre-existing Ch. 15 wound; Zoro pact-renews via self-handicap and the duel pivots at chapter end.
• Ch. 17 — First combat defeat of the crew on-page. Cabaji (named for the first time) duels Zoro and is felled by Onigiri (first named santoryu technique in the series). Buggy is felled by Luffy’s stomp after attempting a “Low-Flying Chop-Chop Cannon” (first named Buggy technique on-page, and first on-page use of the word “Chop-Chop” in any form — proto-naming the fruit). Buggy revives p. 19, demands surrender of the “Grand Line map” reframed as a Luffy demand. Chapter ends on Buggy recognizing Luffy’s straw hat as belonging to “him” — the insolent red-haired pirate from Buggy’s past — the first on-page Buggy <-> Shanks shared-history tell.
• Ch. 30 — Cover-story appearance: cover splash (page 1) shows Mohji (foreground, fur coat + propeller cap), Cabaji (right, sword), Richie (bottom-left silhouette), and unnamed Buggy underlings hauling a giant Buggy-skull/clown-cap figurehead-statue across the wrecked Orange Town silhouette. The cover-story B-plot tracks the crew’s regrouping after Luffy’s defeat of Buggy in Ch. 20. Buggy himself is absent from the cover; his pride (the statue) is the cargo, not the captain.
• Ch. 21 — Crew fully defeated but intact: Buggy off-page (recovering from Ch. 20’s Bazooka). Mohji and Cabaji confirmed alive in the Orange Town rubble (page 4), playing dead. The Ch. 8 Buggy-mook trio (fat mook, curly mook, striped mook) reappear at the Orange Town docks chasing their stolen sailboat (page 11) — KO’d by Zoro in a single sequence (page 13). Crew’s flagship is stolen by the Straw Hats (pages 16-19) — the Buggy Jolly-Roger sail still attached as the ship sails out of port. The Buggy Pirates exit the arc defeated but with all named members alive — the first East Blue villain crew to survive its arc. Sets up Buggy’s recurring-villain status across the series. As of Ch. 21: Buggy flagship has been stolen; the crew is base-less in Orange Town until they can recover. The Drinker Pub HQ is in ruins after the Ch. 20 fight.
• Ch. 42 — Cover-story Part 6 A Trip Through the Sky (page 1). Cabaji-styled figure with knife and fork at an outdoor meal with Mohji-and-Richie reaction shot left and two ducks at the table; “BOOOOPS!” / “TASTES BAD!!” speech-bubbles. • Ch. 47 — Cover-story Part Nine “You’re a Strange Creature, Too” (page 1). Buggy alone in a moonlit forest clearing, head resting on an open treasure chest, surrounded by Gaimon-Island-style hybrid jungle animals (tiger, fox-eared dog, baby-tiger-headed pig, elephant-trunked dog, hybrid goat/giraffe). Strongly implies Buggy has washed up on the Strange Animals Island (Ch. 22-Ch. 23 — Gaimon’s island). The post-Orange-Town survival B-plot continues. Cover-story-as-canon convention: the East Blue cover-story B-plots share geography with the main story.
• Ch. 60 cover — Buggy’s Crew After the Battle Part 19: “Complete!! Ritchie’s Pirate Crew”: Ritchie (Mohji’s lion from Orange Town) reappears as the cover-story’s standing-captain figure, wearing Buggy’s pirate-captain cape and holding a Buggy-flag, with Buggy reduced to a thought-bubble presence overhead. The cover-story’s accumulated companions (clams, cat-creatures, fish from Parts 11-18) are framed as Ritchie’s crew. The 19-installment Buggy survival-saga reaches its inversion-climax: Buggy is replaced as captain by the most charismatic member of the crew of animals he collected during the saga. Buggy cover story Part 22 (Ch. 67) — “Ritchie au Vin” — full crew reunion confirmed

Buggy, Mohji, Cabaji, and Richie are on-cover together for the first time since the post-Buggy-defeat split. The cover-story’s reunion-arc is paid off; the crew is in unified-domestic-scene register (cooking together). The cover comically frames the unified-crew as cooking-one-of-its-own-members (Richie) — a tonal callback to the main story’s cook-pirate-paradox (Baratie). Loguetown — main-text return + Alvida-alliance canonized (Ch. 98)

• Ch. 98 — Main-text return after 78 chapters of cover-story-only. Buggy in full pirate-captain regalia leaps onto the Loguetown Special Execution Scaffold (page 12, THOOM!!), monologues the cover-story arc as canonical history (‘There was laughter, there were tears!! There was friendship as well!!’), then KO’s Luffy with a giant gavel (page 13, WHUMP!!) with Cabaji at his side. Declares public execution: ‘You’re going to die in the same spot as the Pirate King!!!’ The chapter delivers the first multi-captain villain-confederation in the main text — Buggy and Alvida formally allied per Alvida’s ‘We teamed up in order to find you’ (page 11). The Buggy-Alvida-allied-pair is the structural ancestor of the Cross Guild.
