Is there an island in the sky, and can a ship sail up to it?
In Ch. 0221 the crew recaps that their Log Pose needle pointed straight up, to the
sky (p. 17), and that a galleon fell out of the sky onto the sea (p. 17). These
two facts — a needle that won’t lie pointing upward, and a ship that came down from
above — are the opening seeds that a destination exists above the ocean.
Resolution
Resolved @ Ch. 706 — Yes — the sky island is real and a ship can reach it; Skypiea sits above the Blue Sea, is reachable via the route up, and further sky islands exist deeper in the New World.
The opening seeds are borne out: the Log Pose needle that pointed straight up and the galleon that fell from the sky both signalled a genuine destination above the ocean (Ch. 221), corroborated by Noland’s 400-year-old log book describing “a sea in the sky” (Ch. 228).
The crew reaches Skypiea and confirms it is real ground, not cloud — Nami identifies Upper Yard as “a fragment of what we saw on the ground,” the missing Jaya lofted into the air (Ch. 251, Ch. 258).
The Shandian flashback confirms the landmass rose rather than sank — “400 years ago, the island flew up to Skypiea” (Ch. 275).
Bellamy, the Mock Town cynic who mocked the sky-island legend, independently verifies it as a hostile witness — he “went there… saw the Sky Island” and returned with a pillar of gold (Ch. 706).
Sky islands exist beyond the Skypiea route too: a New World sky island, the ruined Balloon Terminal at 30,000 feet, is confirmed to host even Celestial Dragons (Ch. 795).
