Sea Train

Structural lore — the steam sea train that runs on tracks laid below the surface of the ocean. The specific Water Seven train, the Puffing Tom, is recorded here .

What we know

• Ch. 322 (p. 17): A sea train is a steam-powered locomotive that runs on tracks laid below the surface of the ocean; it “uses a steam engine to rotate the paddles over the tracks.”
• Ch. 322 (p. 17): The sea train hauls boats and delivers mail, and “circles through the same places every day, taking riders from island to island.”
• Ch. 322 (p. 17): The submerged track area around stations is partitioned off; “it’s dangerous to bring a ship in” — bringing a vessel into the rail zone can foul the train, and “the rail guards keep getting broken” (p. 18).
• Ch. 323 (p. 10): The sea train runs through Water Seven itself — “no wonder the sea train runs through here,” given the city’s industrial scale — confirming Water Seven as the rail network’s hub. Blue Station (the line’s origin here) is seen as the crew enters the city (p. 10).
• Ch. 322 (p. 18): A network of special trains serves other towns — San Faldo (the carnival town), Pucci (the “Gourmet City”), St. Poplar (the “town of the spring queen”) — and “if you’re involved with the government, there’s another special train you could take.”
• Ch. 325 (p. 16): The Sea Train is reaffirmed as a major Water Seven institution — managed by Iceberg, the city’s Mayor and Galley-La President, per Kaku’s rundown. San Faldo is named again (p. 7) as a Sea-Train-route town holding a costume festival.
• Ch. 328 (p. 12): The World Government official Corgy arrives at Water Seven “all this way on the Sea Train” to corner Iceberg — confirming the Sea Train as the island’s link to outside (including government) traffic.
• Ch. 338 (p. 19): The Sea Train is named as the sole exit from the island. With Aqua Laguna confirmed to flood Water Seven tonight and the Going Merry ruled out (“They won’t be going anywhere on the boat they arrived in”), Galley-La Company states that only the last two Sea Trains of the day offer any way off the island. • Ch. 340 (pp. 5, 8): The day’s Sea-Train schedule is detailed out of Blue Station during the Aqua Laguna evacuation: the afternoon train departs for St. Poplar at 1 PM, another departs for Enies Lobby at 11 (running even in the storm-weather), and “one more leaves tonight.” First on-page naming of the Enies Lobby route — the WG judicial-island destination toward which Nico Robin is being moved (the crew fears she boarded one, p. 8).
• Ch. 340 (p. 5): Masks are forbidden aboard the Sea Train during the Straw Hat manhunt — all passengers must show their faces. The station is turned into a manhunt chokepoint by Galley-La Company. Cross-link Enies Lobby, St. Poplar.
• Ch. 341 (p. 17): The Sea Train is the island’s principal off-island getaway route — the Galley-La Company foremen guarding Iceberg reason the criminals are “still somewhere on the island” because “no one saw them get on the Sea Train,” establishing the rail line as the watched exit during the Aqua Laguna night. • Ch. 355 (pp. 2, 15): The Sea Train was built by Tom’s Workers. Tom’s company “succeeded in opening the Sea Train” and, during his ten-year stay of execution, “completed the remaining three tracks over the next four years.” The network delivers lumber from St. Poplar and links Water Seven to other towns. A Judicial-Ship official recalls riding it: “From idea to reality… it’s been 14 years already” — dating the Sea Train’s realization ~14 years before the present. This corroborates the @0322 open question “who designed/built it” (now answered: Tom’s Workers; cf. the @0354 conception event). Cross-link Tom’s Workers, Tom, St. Poplar.
• Ch. 350 (p. 15): Origin/purpose of the Sea Train, narrated by Franky. Before the Sea Train, the rough seas around Water Seven made “trips between islands… almost impossible,” and the sea-locked people lived in fear that the next high tide (Aqua Laguna) would wipe them out. The Sea Train (“Puffing Tom”) removed that unease — “now you don’t even need a Log; anyone can cross the sea anytime they want… it’s like a miracle.” It was the people’s liberation from sea-isolation and flood-fear. • Ch. 356 (pp. 14–15): The Sea Train’s in-world legal weight, stated at Tom’s trial. The judge cites the Sea Train as Tom’s “brilliant invention” that “will continue to contribute… to the betterment of Water Seven” — a contribution strong enough that Tom’s prior crime (building Gold Roger’s ship, the Oro Jackson) “would have been pardoned today.” Only the (fabricated) CP5/Spandam Judicial-Ship attack overrides the pardon and compounds his crimes. • Ch. 358 (pp. 3, 6, 12–13): The Sea Train reframed as the agent of Franky’s near-death and FAKED death. The wreck the World Government “reported” as the accident that killed Cutty Flam (Franky) was a Sea Train collision — the gravely wounded Franky survived and rebuilt himself with scrap (see Cyborg). Establishes the Sea-Train accident as the pivot of the “Tom’s workers” incident eight years prior — the event the WG used to declare Cutty Flam dead and erase the record. • Ch. 359 (p. 19): The present-day Enies-Lobby train is announced at Blue Station — the chase clock + destination. “Last train for Enies Lobby… departing at eleven o’clock P.M.” with riders instructed to “board from the station’s second floor” because of the rising Aqua Laguna water level — confirming the Sea Train runs even during the flood. Origin — invented by the shipwright Tom

• Ch. 350 (p. 15): The Sea Train was the invention of “a shipwright named Tom.” Franky: “…the genius of a shipwright named Tom… All of that was made possible by the Sea Train.” This is the first on-page attribution of the Sea Train’s creation to Tom — Franky being Tom’s surviving apprentice (Cutty Flam, @0346). The Puffing Tom (the Water Seven train)

• Ch. 322 (p. 14): The Puffing Tom is the sea train shown crossing in front of the Going Merry at Shift Station; its lead car is marked “WATER 7.”
• Ch. 322 (p. 19): It originates from Blue Station on Water Seven.
• Ch. 322 (pp. 6–7, 17): The giant frog Yokozuna lives by Shift Station and repeatedly challenges the Puffing Tom to a test of strength.
• Ch. 357 (pp. 9–13): The Puffing Tom — Tom’s bargained masterwork — is completed and SETS SAIL on the day of Tom’s trial (~14 years ago), as Tom is taken to Enies Lobby: “Mr. Tom!!! …set sail.” Confirms the @0354/@0355 “who built it” answer (Tom / Tom’s Workers). Young Cutty Flam (Franky) commandeers a cannon-boat and chases the departing Sea Train down the sea tracks (“Give back Mr. Tom!!”, pp. 17–22). Cross-link Tom, Tom’s Workers, Franky, Enies Lobby.

The Rocketman (Kokoro’s brakeless rescue train)

• Ch. 365 (pp. 9–12, 18–19): The Rocketman is revealed — a shark-headed steam locomotive, “the runaway Sea Train… we call it Rocketman,” stored ~8 years in a basement under an abandoned brick warehouse behind the Water Seven garbage dump. It is a flawed/runaway prototype Tom built before the Puffing Tom was completed — its engine speed is “uncontrollable” (no reliable brakes), so Kokoro warns “I can’t guarantee your lives.” Kokoro (who will drive it: “I’m a veteran at operating these things”) and Iceberg prep it — water + coal filled, steam built up — so the Straw Hats can chase the CP9 kidnap train to Enies Lobby. The shark head is, per Kokoro, “there as a joke.” It departs Water Seven at chapter’s end with Luffy, Zoro, Chopper, Nami, Chimney & Gonbe aboard, the Franky Family hitching their King Bulls (pp. 14–19).

• Ch. 366 (“Sortie!”) (pp. 2-8, 13-16): The Rocketman chase BEGINS. Kokoro drops the Rocketman onto the sea-train rails — it erupts from the Water Seven canal (FWOOM / HONK HONK) and crashes onto the tracks (p. 8) — launching the pursuit of the Puffing Tom (the kidnap train carrying Robin) toward Enies Lobby. The Rocketman is confirmed a true runaway: full throttle with a dead/non-responsive throttle, “I can’t guarantee your lives” — it cannot be steered or halted (Kokoro: her only job was to get it on the tracks, pp. 13-14). Both named sea trains are on the rails simultaneously this chapter (the Rocketman pursuing, the Puffing Tom fleeing). The Franky Family ride out on their King Bulls Sodom & Gomora to catch and board the Rocketman (pp. 3-5). The runaway is barreling head-on at an Aqua Laguna wave with the cannon being readied against it (pp. 13-16). • Ch. 367 (“Sniper King”) (pp. 3, 6–14): The Rocketman breaches the Aqua Laguna wave. The runaway charges directly into the towering Aqua Laguna wave; the Franky Family’s mounted “Super Scrap Cannon” (custom cannons rigged on the engine) fails to dent it, but a combined Luffy (Gum-Gum Three-Hundred Pound Cannon) + Zoro (“two times 108” / 216-count cannon) blast punches a hole clean through, letting the train burst out the far side (“WE GOT THROUGH!!”, pp. 6–10) and ride on toward the Puffing Tom. Kokoro reaffirms the brakeless-runaway state — “we can’t stop on our own anymore! … We’re already going faster than the ship can handle” (p. 14). First on-page demonstration of a vessel forcing through Aqua Laguna.
