Vivi’s loyal saddle-mounted giant Ultra-Spotbill duck · combat-mount with weapon-rigging · comedic-incompetent in tactical execution but emotionally devoted to Vivi

Profile

Giant variety of the Spotbill duck (a real Japanese duck species, karugamo / Anas poecilorhyncha). Stands roughly human-height, with bright pink-tinted plumage, helmet-and-saddle gear, water-barrel rigging, and weapon-holsters. Introduced as Ms. Wednesday’s mount in the Whisky Peak arc; will accompany Vivi through Little Garden, Drum, and Alabasta as her loyal animal-companion. Remains in Vivi’s service after the Straw Hats depart Alabasta.

Arc-by-arc updates

Reverie prelude (Ch. 823)

  • Accompanies Vivi aboard the Alabasta ship (“COO!”, p. 3).

Alabasta — embarks with the royals (Ch. 822)

  • Accompanies Vivi and King Cobra as they set sail (“QUACK!!”, p. 17).
  • (last_appearance advances to 0822.)

Alabasta — Vivi’s farewell (Ch. 216)

  • Carries Vivi to the harbor cliff and holds the microphone for her farewell broadcast (“KAROO! THE MICROPHONE!”, pp. 12-13); salutes alongside Vivi as the Going Merry departs (p. 19).

Alabasta — Alubarna Palace (Ch. 214) — Vivi’s bedside companion; the decision-clock is built on his run-time

  • At Vivi’s side through the palace scenes (pp. 9, 15). Vivi: “Come on, Karoo. You can sleep with me.” (p. 9).
  • Vivi’s farewell decision-clock is computed on Karoo’s run-time (p. 15): “It’ll take Karoo four hours to run there, so I’d have to leave here by eight.” — the Supersonic-Duck-Squadron-leader’s speed is the logistical lever for whether Vivi can make the East-Port rendezvous. Vivi: “What do you want to do, Karoo? …If I go, you’ll come too…” Cross-link Vivi.

Alabasta — Alubarna (Ch. 205) — with the search-team

Alabasta — Alubarna North Block (Ch. 189)

  • Carries Nami through Medi Assembly Hall plaza (EEK! / RRMM! / QUACK?!).
  • Cross-link Nami (Ch. 0189 mount-rider partner), Zoro (Ch. 0189 pursuer), Alubarna (Ch. 0189 North Block / Medi Assembly Hall evidence add).

Alabasta — Alubarna (Ch. 183) — Squadron Leader Karoo — chapter-title; wall-runs the sheer cliffs of Alubarna; shot in the street; charges Bon Clay one last time before collapsing; rescued by Sanji

  • LOAD-BEARING — Karoo’s Squadron Leader Karoo identity canonized as a chapter-title (Ch. 183). The Ch. 0180 Squadron Leader Karoo — Supersonic Duck Squadron (Alabasta Kingdom’s Swiftest Unit) caption now anchors a chapter-title — Karoo’s elite-mount-tier identity is the chapter’s structural axis. Cross-link Karoo Squadron Leader Chapter-Title Canonization (new), Karoo Supersonic Duck Squadron Royal-Guard Reveal (Ch. 183 chapter-title-canonization evidence add).
  • LOAD-BEARING — Karoo scales the sheer cliffs of Alubarna carrying Vivi (Ch. 183 pp. 3-8). Pursued by Bon Clay (“I told you, you can’t escape me!!!” / “I’m going to eat you!!!”), Karoo refuses Vivi’s dismount-and-fight order (“Let me off, Karoo!! I’ll fight him!!!”) and pivots — “Not that way, Karoo!! He’ll overtake us on the steps!!” — running straight up the cliff-face (p. 5, caption: “That duck is scaling the sheer cliffs of Alubarna!!!”). Bon Clay at the base, mouth-open “HUH?” — Vivi mid-cliff: “K-Karoo!!! That was incredible!! You flew!!!” First on-page Karoo-wall-run beat + first on-page Alubarna-cliffside-mesa-city vertical-architecture canonization. Cross-link Karoo Scales Sheer Cliffs Of Alubarna Wall-Run Beat (new — load-bearing), Alubarna Cliffside-Mesa City Vertical-Architecture Debut (new — load-bearing).
  • Karoo gets shot in the city street (Ch. 183 p. 9, SHFF / SW…UMP…?!). Vivi: “KAROO!!!” / “YOU’VE BEEN SHOT!!!” — Karoo collapses. First on-page Karoo combat-casualty at firearm-tier (Ch. 0120 was beating-torture-tier; Ch. 0125 was wax-ball-strike-tier). Pays off the Ch. 0125 I’m not losing my friends loyalty-doctrine + Ch. 0120 silent-protector register at the Alabasta-saga endgame tier — Karoo bleeds in the line of duty. Cross-link Karoo Shot Combat-Casualty At Alubarna Beat (new), Karoo Torture Resistance Loyalty Doctrine (Ch. 183 firearm-injury-tier evidence add).
  • Karoo charges Bon Clay one last time after being shot (Ch. 183 p. 12). OOF!!! UGAH-UGAH-UGAH!!! — wounded, Karoo charges Bon Clay (who has just been threatening Vivi); Bon Clay swan-kicks Karoo down (SHWUSHH!!) — Karoo tumbles. The won’t-stop-protecting-Vivi-even-while-bleeding register continues the Ch. 0120-0125 loyalty-doctrine to its highest-tier expression.
  • Honored by Sanji as Squadron Leader Karoo — a real man (Ch. 183 p. 13). Sanji (arriving at the rescue, in long coat with cigarette): “Well done, Squadron Leader Karoo. You’re a real man!!”first on-page Strawhat-member honors Karoo at the Squadron-Leader-tier; Sanji uses the Ch. 0180-canonized rank-name as a salute. Pre-loads the kingdom-finale Karoo-honored-by-the-Strawhats register.
  • Carried away by Vivi for medical care (Ch. 183 p. 14). Sanji: “I’m fine!! Take care of Karoo!!” — Vivi flees the Sanji-vs-Bon-Clay fight scene carrying the wounded duck. Karoo is now combat-arc-incapacitated for the immediate-next-chapters; the I’ll-protect-Vivi-with-my-body register is operationally complete.
  • Cross-link Bon Clay (chase-attacker), Sanji (rescuer + Squadron-Leader honors), Vivi (mount-rider + injured-Karoo-carrier), Alubarna (Ch. 183 cliffside-mesa + Southeast-Gate evidence add), Karoo Squadron Leader Chapter-Title Canonization (new), Karoo Scales Sheer Cliffs Of Alubarna Wall-Run Beat (new — load-bearing), Karoo Shot Combat-Casualty At Alubarna Beat (new), Alubarna Cliffside-Mesa City Vertical-Architecture Debut (new — load-bearing).

Alabasta — Shielding Vivi + Distress-Courier Network (Ch. 182)

  • Karoo dives in front of Vivi to take a cannon-blast impact (pp. 14-15, FWUMP… THUD…). First on-page Karoo-self-sacrifice-for-Vivi beat. Vivi cradles unconscious Karoo: “YOU… SHIELDED ME?” / “KAROO…”
  • The Supersonic Duck Squadron operates as a distress-courier network (p. 17, Usopp to Sanji): “YOUR DUCKS CAME CALLING FOR HELP!!” — first on-page operational use of the Squadron as a help-summoning courier network. Extends the Ch. 0180 Squadron-reveal into an active multi-mission protocol.
  • Karoo regains consciousness toward chapter-end (p. 19, QUACK!!! QUACK?!!) — alive.
  • Cross-link Vivi (Ch. 182 shielded-target), Sanji (Ch. 182 duck-distress-courier recipient), Usopp (Ch. 182 duck-distress-courier articulator), Karoo Shields Vivi From Cannon Fire Loyalty Beat (new), Karoo Supersonic Duck Squadron Royal-Guard Reveal (Ch. 182 distress-courier-network evidence add).

Alabasta — Supersonic Duck Quiz (Ch. 181) — Supersonic Duck Squadron deploys the Vivi-decoy-squadron strategy; Karoo carries the real Vivi for the final solo dash; squadron-member-roster canonized via SBS

  • Supersonic Duck Squadron operationally deploys the Vivi-decoy-squadron (pp. 6-13). Karoo leads the six Supersonic Ducks (each carrying a Strawhat / Vivi / Eyelashes in princess-capes) in a split-formation toward Alubarna’s five gates. Karoo’s squadron is the Strawhats’ decoy-distribution infrastructure — the Royal-Guard-affiliated military-network is operationally the Strawhats’ tactical asset for the Alubarna chase.
  • Karoo carries the real Vivi for the final solo dash (p. 15, 19). Karoo arrives at Vivi’s side at the chapter-end: “KOO?? QUACK!!” / Vivi: ”…KAROO!! LET’S GO…” Karoo (close-up p. 19, beak-grit, hood blown back): “QUACK!!!” The Vivi-Karoo mount-companion dyad is reaffirmed at the chapter-climax.
  • Squadron-member-roster canonized via SBS Ch. 181 (p. 20). Oda confirms the seven Supersonic Duck Squadron members: Cowboy, Bourbon Jr., Karoo, Kentauros, Hikoichi (bottom row); Stomp, Ivan X (top row). Karoo’s squadron-role is operationally peer-tier to six other named ducks. (The chapter shows six ducks on-page in the chase-composition, suggesting one duck is held in reserve or with the Royal Guard.)
  • Cross-link Vivi (mount-companion partner), Karoo Supersonic Duck Squadron Royal-Guard Reveal (Ch. 181 fully cashed — squadron-deployed-as-Strawhat-decoy-infrastructure), SBS Vol 20 Supersonic Duck Squadron Seven Member Names Canonized (new), Supersonic Duck Squadron Six Named Members Decoy Composition (new).

Alabasta — Sandora Riverside (Ch. 180) — Alabasta Animal Land — LOAD-BEARING Squadron Leader reveal with the Supersonic Duck Squadron, Alabasta Kingdom’s Swiftest Unit

  • LOAD-BEARING — Karoo’s military-leadership identity canonized on-page (Ch. 180 pp. 16-17). Karoo arrives on the far bank of the Sandora River leading six giant racing-spotbills (WO Ooo… dust-cloud, QUACK!!!). Caption: “SQUADRON LEADER KAROO — SUPERSONIC DUCK SQUADRON (ALABASTA KINGDOM’S SWIFTEST UNIT)” — Karoo is named Squadron Leader of a Royal-Guard-affiliated military unit for the first time. The Ch. 0159 solo desert courier mission is here retro-cast: Karoo was operating within an institutional duck-network off-page; he is not just Vivi’s mount but a Royal-Guard-tier officer with his own command. Each Strawhat will mount a Supersonic Duck for the final dash to Alubarna — pre-loads the forward-canon Alubarna chase composition where each Strawhat rides a duck disguised as Vivi to split Baroque Works’ pursuit. Cross-link Karoo Supersonic Duck Squadron Royal-Guard Reveal (new — load-bearing), Karoo Solo Desert Courier Mission (Ch. 180 institutional-context payoff evidence add).
  • The Spot-Billed-Duck-Squadron register is now operational — the comic-incompetent register (Ch. 109) coexists with the loyalty-tier register (Ch. 120) and the courier-tier register (Ch. 159) and now with the Squadron-Leader military-leadership tier (Ch. 180). Karoo is a four-axis character whose mount-companion role is the surface-layer of a Royal-Guard military-officer identity.
  • Cross-link Vivi (the princess whose Royal-Guard he serves), Sandora River (Ch. 180 squadron-arrival event), Alubarna (Ch. 180 dispatch-destination).

Alabasta — Luffy-rescue helmet-prop (Ch. 179) — title-splash helmet on Pell’s back; cliffhanger half-buried helmet at Yuba

  • Cliffhanger silent-witness composition (Ch. 179 p. 19) — a half-buried Karoo helmet appears in the dunes alongside the Straw-Hat flag, immediately before the DOOM!!! MEAT!!!! Luffy-survival cliffhanger. The Karoo helmet is the rescue-team’s signature-prop — the Karoo-was-here tell.
  • Cross-link Pell (carries Karoo’s helmet on title-splash), Luffy (rescue-target), Yuba (rescue-site).

Alabasta — Rainbase dunes (Ch. 178) — Final-panel silhouette approaches the impaled Luffy; pre-load of the Karoo-as-rescuer beat

  • Cross-link Vivi (princess-rider), Pell (airlift-carrier).

Alabasta — Rainbase (Ch. 168) — first on-page in-Alabasta-city appearance; chase-cluster companion

  • First on-page in-Alabasta-city appearance (pp. 3, 5, 8) — head-shawl/scarf over, with Vivi at the crew-assembly outside Rainbase. Not central to combat this chapter.
  • In the chase-cluster through Rainbase plazas; reaches Rain Dinners with the group.
  • Cross-link Vivi (Ch. 168 mount-companion), Rainbase (Ch. 168 Strawhat-arrival event add).

Alabasta — Battlefront (Ch. 167) — royal-courier debut; map-honored Karoo’s Route; honored by Cobra

  • First on-page Karoo-as-royal-courier beat (pp. 13-15). Stumbles into Alubarna Palace bearing Vivi’s letter (“LORD CHAKA! LORD PELL! / KAROO HAS RETURNED!!”); comic-relief water-chug (SLUR / GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG) before delivering the letter. The letter triggers the royal-court-tier compartment-break of the Crocodile-truth (Cobra reads it, p. 14).
  • Honored by Cobra (p. 15). “Well done, Karoo. Vivi says you fought valiantly too. What courage!” — princess-grade citation-honor for the duck-mount.
  • Bristles at Igaram-mourning (p. 15). FWAP!! / QUACK!!! — Karoo’s wing-flapping protest at being treated as a courageous-but-doomed messenger; Pell mis-reads as wing-pain. Comic-relief beat threaded into the chapter’s emotional-heavy court-scene.
  • Karoo’s Route — named on the strategic map (p. 2). The path Karoo traveled from Vivi’s position to Alubarna is the named third-route on the Alabasta geography-map; his courier-journey is the chapter’s structural axis (it carries the intel that triggers the royal-army war-orders).
  • Cross-link Vivi (her courier), Nefertari Cobra (honors him), Pell (densified), Chaka (densified), Karoo Survives Crocodile Rendezvous With Royal Court (new).

Alabasta arc (Ch. 166) — Strawhat-desert-composition; among Vivi’s escort

  • On-page among the Strawhat-desert-composition (Ch. 166 pp. 14-19), at Vivi’s side. Non-speaking. First on-page Alabasta-desert-Karoo post-Yuba appearance.

Alabasta (Ch. 162) — Adventure in the Kingdom of Sand — silent in pack; on-page alongside the new Alabasta mount-companion Eyelashes

  • Silent in pack through the chapter; on-page on the dune-line and at the crags rest-stop. Pre-loads the two-mount-companion register that runs the Alabasta saga (Karoo + Eyelashes — Vivi’s two named animal companions).
  • Cross-link Eyelashes (new mount-companion), Vivi Names Her Animal Companions Pattern (new).

Alabasta (Ch. 161) — The Green City Erumalu — present at the Erumalu walk-through

  • Present throughout (Ch. 161 pp. 5-19) — sand-scarfed; backgrounded but visible alongside Vivi. No dialogue or named-attack beats this chapter. (Implies Karoo successfully completed his Ch. 159 solo courier mission to Alubarna and rejoined the party off-page.)

Alabasta — Nanohana (Ch. 159) — Come On — first on-page solo courier mission; cross-desert delivery dispatched

  • LOAD-BEARING — First on-page Karoo-without-Vivi field deployment (Ch. 159 pp. 5-6). Vivi grabs Karoo mid-Nanohana-flight and gives him a letter for King Cobra in Alubarna: “You’ll have to cross the desert alone… Can you do it?” / Karoo: “QUACK!!” Karoo with a small backpack, sprinting (TMP TMP TMP TMP TMP) across the desert sucking water from a straw (SLURP SLURP SLURP) under Vivi’s call “Conserve water!!”
  • Operationalized as a courier-tier solo asset. The spot-billed duck mount-companion is no longer just a transport — Karoo is now a standalone field-agent entrusted with the most important message of the arc. Pre-loads forward-canon Karoo-as-Strawhat-tier-warrior (Super-Spot-Billed-Duck-Troops register). Cross-link Karoo Spot-Billed Duck Mount Companion Debut (Ch. 159 solo-deployment escalation evidence add), Karoo Solo Desert Courier Mission (new — load-bearing).
  • Conserve-water tell — Karoo sucks down most of his water-rations in the first running-stride. The comic register of the courier-mission is maintained even as the stakes (deliver proof of the plot to the king) are absolute.
  • Cross-link Vivi (dispatcher), Alabasta (desert traversal), Alubarna (destination).

Sea-Voyage Transit / pre-Alabasta (Ch. 156) — fishes off the Merry; the caught by a duck hook on Bon Clay

  • On the Merry as Vivi’s mount/companion; fishes off the rail alongside Luffy/Usopp (pp. 1, 6).
  • Pulls / quacks at the rod when Bon Clay is hooked (p. 8) — the “caught by a duck” gag. Karoo functions as fishing-line co-operator with Usopp, narratively delivering Bon Clay aboard.
  • Used by Nami as a pillow/resting-prop in transit-frames (continuing the Ch. 155 pillow-Karoo gag).

Drum Island (Ch. 132)

  • Aboard the Going Merry during the Drum Island docking and the standoff with the islander cordon (pp. 11-15). Non-speaking.

  • Comic-panic register sustained — Karoo runs frantic circles over Nami’s illness and is the first to spot the chapter-end cyclone.

Little Garden (Ch. 126) — Instinct — survives the Ch. 0125 wax-ball beating; carries the burning saddle-rope to Luffy and tramps the flame forward; endures into the chapter’s victory — payoff of the torture-resistance loyalty doctrine

  • Survives the Ch. 0125 wax-ball beating (Ch. 126 p. 3) — Karoo, battered from Mr. 3’s Candle-Champion wax-ball strikes in Ch. 0125, keeps moving (QUACK!! / TMP TMP) — carries the burning saddle-rope to Luffy and tramps the flame forward so Luffy can use it to melt the wax. Karoo’s saddle-rigging-rope is the fire-source for the chapter’s arc-resolution rescue.
  • Endures into the chapter’s victory (Ch. 126 p. 17) — QUACK!!! — Karoo survives to the chapter’s end alongside the freed crew. Payoff of the Karoo torture-resistance loyalty doctrine — loyalty-under-torture is rewarded with survival and the satisfaction of the crew’s win. Cross-link Luffy (fire-source collaborator), Karoo Survives Torture Returns To Combat Beat (Ch. 0126 confirmed payoff), Karoo Torture Resistance Loyalty Doctrine.

Little Garden (Ch. 125) — Candle Champion — Karoo as combat-tier sword-bearer arrives at the wax-arena; takes the rope from Goldenweek to attempt rescue-via-pull (bound-hostage rope-bond duress-game); beaten by Mr. 3’s Candle Champion wax-ball strikes; I’m not losing my friends declarative; saddle-rope used as Luffy’s fire-source for the chapter-end rescue cliffhanger

  • LOAD-BEARING — Karoo as combat-tier sword-bearer arrives at the wax-arena (Ch. 125 p. 11) — QUACK!!! DI…DING!! — Karoo arrives carrying a sword (visible blade in beak). First on-page Karoo-as-armed-combatant beat — the Spot-Billed Duck pivots from torture-resistance loyalty (Ch. 120) to active armed rescue agent. Pre-loads Karoo’s Super-Spot-Billed-Duck-Squad combat role at Alabasta’s final battle.
  • LOAD-BEARING — bound-rope-hostage composition (Karoo as duress-game vehicle) (Ch. 125 pp. 14-15) — Goldenweek hands Karoo a rope-end: “Hey, take this rope!” Karoo pulls the rope (TMP TMP TMP) to attempt to free the bound captives — but the rope is wired to Goldenweek’s Crescendo Stone gravity-pressure painting, weaponized against the captives. First on-page Karoo-as-bound-hostage rope-bond composition — the duck’s loyalty-and-agency is weaponized into a duress-game by the Officer Agents. Cross-link Karoo As Bound-Hostage Rope-Bond Composition (new).
  • Gets beaten by Mr. 3’s Candle Champion wax-ball strikes (Ch. 125 pp. 14-17) — WHAM!! / KA-BAM!! / WHAP!! — Mr. 3 strikes Karoo repeatedly. Karoo refuses to stop: “Hmph!! Forget it!! …I’m not losing my friends…” (p. 16) — second on-page Karoo torture-resistance / loyalty-canonization beat (after Ch. 120’s refuses to quack under torture). The won’t-lose-my-friends declarative is the emotional-anchor-line for Karoo as a full crew-tier loyalty-character. Cross-link Karoo Torture Resistance Loyalty Doctrine (Ch. 125 second-on-page beat evidence add).
  • Saddle-rope as Luffy’s fire-source (Ch. 125 p. 17) — Vivi (off-pedestal voice): “Luffy!!! That flame’s too small!! Light Karoo’s rope!!!” — Karoo’s saddle-rigging-rope is the chapter-end fire-source for Luffy’s wax-armor-melting rescue. Karoo’s body/rigging becomes the rescue-tool — the duck-as-utility-companion register pivots from mount to active rescue-enabler. Pre-loads forward Karoo-saddle-rigging-as-utility composition.
  • Cross-link Mr. 3 (Karoo’s beating-attacker), Miss Goldenweek (Karoo’s duress-game-deployer), Vivi (Karoo’s protected princess), Luffy (Karoo’s fire-source-collaborator), Karoo As Bound-Hostage Rope-Bond Composition (new).

Little Garden (Ch. 124) — The Tea Is Good — getaway-mount with Vivi (comic-skittish-of-Vivi mount-mid-sprint gag); Color-Trap off-switch executor (impact-collision with Luffy rubs paint off shirt); enrolled as cover-art Vol. 3 spinoff travel-companion mascot under a Marine-style hat

  • LOAD-BEARING — skittish-of-Vivi comic mount-mid-sprint gag (Ch. 124 pp. 4-5) — Karoo sprints away from Vivi mid-mount attempt: Vivi: “Hey!! Stop!! Lemme get on!!” / “Why are you scared of me!?” Karoo: “WOOO QUACK!!” The Ch. 0120 torture-resistance loyalty-doctrine (Karoo refuses to quack under Miss V’s torture) is now contrasted with the comic-skittish-of-Vivi-when-she-needs-a-mount running gag — Karoo is loyal-but-comically-uncoordinated as a mount-companion. Cross-link Karoo Skittish Of Vivi Comic Inversion (new).
  • Color-Trap off-switch executor with Usopp (Ch. 124 p. 9) — Karoo + Usopp crash into Luffy mid-Laughter-Yellow trance; the impact-collision rubs the paint off Luffy’s shirt and the trance breaks. Karoo’s mount-tactical role extends to combat-intervention-via-collision.
  • Cavalry-charge participant (Ch. 124 p. 14) — Karoo charges Mr. 5 + Goldenweek under Vivi’s command (“Charge!!!”) — FWRRRRR — the duck-cavalry-charge composition is operationally deployed.
  • LOAD-BEARING — enrolled as cover-art Vol. 3 spinoff travel-companion mascot (Ch. 124 p. 1) — Karoo (in a Marine-style triangular hat) sits in a luggage-rickshaw on the Mr. 3 / Miss Golden Week spinoff cover-arc Vol. 3 cover-art at the Tsuru Transportation transit-stop. First on-page Karoo-as-Mr.-3-cover-arc-mascot — Karoo is unwittingly enrolled as a travel-companion across the post-arc cover-arc that runs ~30 chapters. The Karoo-as-Marine-hat composition is a running visual gag of the cover-arc. Cross-link Cover Story Vol 3 Mr 3 Spinoff Debut Tsuru Transportation (new).
  • Cross-link Vivi (skittish-mount target + cavalry-rider), Usopp (combat-mount partner + Color-Trap off-switch co-executor), Luffy (Color-Trap off-switch impact target), Mr. 3 (cover-art enroller), Miss Goldenweek (cover-art co-enroller), Karoo Skittish Of Vivi Comic Inversion (new), Cover Story Vol 3 Mr 3 Spinoff Debut Tsuru Transportation (new).

Little Garden (Ch. 123) — trapped in wax atop the pillar; IF I’M GOING TO BE A STATUE, I WANT THIS POSE statue-pose-vanity gag

  • Trapped in wax atop the pillar (Ch. 123 p. 2-3) — Karoo is engulfed in wax alongside Nami / Vivi / Brogy / Dorry. Reaction-shot: “QUACK!!” (KRAK!).
  • IF I’M GOING TO BE A STATUE, I WANT THIS POSE statue-pose-vanity gag (Ch. 123 p. 3) — Karoo argues over the best statue-pose for posterity. Sister-line to Nami’s I-was-going-to-cut-off-my-legs gag. The Karoo-as-irreverent-Strawhat-member coding continues from the Ch. 120 loyalty-doctrine canonization — Karoo’s I-am-a-permanent-crewmate register is operationally complete: he’s not just a Vivi-mount, he’s a fully participating Strawhat in the comedic register as well.
  • Cross-link Vivi (co-trapped), Nami (co-trapped), Strawhat Irreverence Under Threat Coding (new — load-bearing).

Little Garden (Ch. 122) — A Dead Body Is Useless — survives Ch. 120 torture; carries Usopp into the wax-trap rescue scene as cavalry-mount; first cross-Strawhat mount-role expansion

  • LOAD-BEARING — survives Ch. 120 torture and returns to combat (Ch. 122 pp. 2, 16) — Karoo opens the chapter FWUMP-collapsing into the wax-trap scene (apparently still injured from Ch. 120’s THWAM WHAM beating) — and recovers off-panel to charge in at the rescue-arrival (p. 16, QUACK!!!) carrying Usopp on his back. The Ch. 120 torture-resistance loyalty-doctrine pays off into active-rescue-combat-role in Ch. 122. Cross-link Karoo Torture Resistance Loyalty Doctrine (Ch. 122 confirmed payoff — torture-survived, returns-to-combat), Karoo Survives Torture Returns To Combat Beat (new — load-bearing).
  • LOAD-BEARING — first cross-Strawhat Karoo-mount expansion (carries Usopp) (Ch. 122 pp. 16-17) — Karoo’s standard Vivi-mount role expands to whichever-Strawhat-needs-rapid-deployment. First cross-Strawhat Karoo-mount beat in the series. The duck-as-Vivi’s-mount register is now operationally extended to Karoo-as-Strawhat-cavalry-asset. The Karoo-Usopp pairing operationalizes the Ch. 120 Usopp-Vivi tactical-pair into a mount-and-rider combat composition. Pre-loads forward Alabasta-saga Karoo-as-shared-Strawhat-mount beats and the Super-Spot-Billed-Duck-Squad leadership reveal.
  • Reunion with Vivi (Ch. 122 p. 17) — “Karoo!!” Vivi reacts with relief; Karoo silent through the panel (his standard QUACK speech-pattern is preserved for combat-cries-only register). The Vivi-Karoo dyad is re-anchored after the Ch. 120 torture-separation.
  • Cross-link Usopp (Karoo-rider partner), Vivi (reunion partner), Karoo Survives Torture Returns To Combat Beat (new).

Little Garden (Ch. 121) — I Knew — battered from Ch. 120 torture but on-feet; arrives at Luffy/Usopp clearing; PECK PECK PECK pecks Luffy back to consciousness; loyalty-tier extends from Vivi-protection to captain-revival

  • Battered from Ch. 120 torture but on-feet (Ch. 121 p. 6) — Karoo (silhouette, bloodied): ‘Wooooooo… Usopp…’ / ‘Karoo!’ — Karoo is mobile despite the Ch. 120 Mr. 5 + Miss Valentine beating. The Ch. 120 Karoo Torture Resistance Loyalty Doctrine loyalty-tier is reinforced — Karoo not only refused to quack under torture, he’s also operational immediately after the torture.
  • LOAD-BEARING — PECK PECK PECK revives Luffy (Ch. 121 p. 19) — Karoo: ‘QUACK!!!’ Luffy: ‘Are you mad too, bird!?’ PECK PECK PECK…!! — Karoo pecking Luffy back to consciousness. First on-page Karoo-revives-the-captain beat. The loyalty-tier extends from Vivi-protection (Ch. 120) to captain-revival — Karoo now serves the whole crew, not just Vivi. Pre-loads Karoo’s forward-canon role as Vivi’s military officer who deploys his Spot-Billed Duck Squad in service of the entire crew’s mission. The comedic-incompetent register (Ch. 109-110) and the earnest-loyalty-tier register (Ch. 120) and the crew-tier-service register (Ch. 121) now all coexist — Karoo is a fully three-axis character. Cross-link Luffy Recovers From Defeat By Crewmate Voice (Ch. 121 PECK-revives-captain role-instance), Karoo Torture Resistance Loyalty Doctrine (Ch. 121 post-torture operational-recovery evidence add).
  • Cross-link Luffy (revival-recipient), Usopp (clearing-companion), Vivi (the off-stage Vivi whose Karoo continues to serve in extension).

Little Garden (Ch. 120) — The Red Ogre Weeps — captured + tortured by Mr. 5 + Miss Valentine to force a distress-quack; refuses; silent-protector loyalty doctrine canonized; dropped at Vivi’s feet

  • LOAD-BEARING — captured by Mr. 5 + Miss Valentine and tortured to force a distress-quack (Ch. 120 pp. 12-14). Miss Valentine: “Just give us one loud quack and we’ll let you go. Now quack and call your mistress!” Karoo: ”…!” (refuses). Miss Valentine: “Too bad. Then we’ll have to make you quack!” THWAM WHAM!! — Karoo silent throughout the beating; only quacks reluctantly after Vivi has already arrived. First on-page evidence that Karoo is a silent-protector loyalty-character who will not betray Vivi under torture — re-keys his Ch. 0110 comedic-mount-companion register as a full crew-tier loyalty character. The silent-protector grammar contrasts pointedly with his typical QUACK speech-pattern — when it matters, Karoo is silent. Pre-loads his Super-Spot-Billed-Duck-Squad combat role at the Alabasta-saga final battle.
  • Dropped at Vivi’s feet by Mr. 5 (Ch. 120 p. 11) — WUMP!! / “You can have him back. We’ve finished with him.” — Luffy carries the bloodied Karoo onto the scene and delivers him to Vivi. Vivi: “Karoo had nothing to do with this!!! Why?” — first Vivi-protective-of-Karoo emotional beat.
  • Karoo’s first time as a torture-victim — pre-loads the arc-pattern of Karoo enduring physical hardship in defense of Vivi that recurs throughout Alabasta. The comedy-mount register is now decisively augmented by the earnest-loyalty-tier register.
  • Cross-link Vivi (protective-of-Karoo beat), Mr. 5 (torture-perpetrator), Miss Valentine (torture-perpetrator), Luffy (carries-the-bloodied-Karoo-onto-scene), Karoo Torture Resistance Loyalty Doctrine (new — load-bearing).

Little Garden (Ch. 119) — first Karoo-as-escort-not-mount pivot; separated from Nami at the moment of her abduction

  • First Karoo-as-escort-not-mount pivot (pp. 12-15) — Karoo is briefly with Nami in the jungle, then separated at the moment of her abduction. The duck-as-Vivi’s-mount register is broken by this beat — Karoo is now functioning as an independent crewmate-with-agency, not a passive transport animal. Pre-loads the later Super-Spot-Billed-Duck-Troops Captain reveal in Alabasta (Karoo’s military-leadership identity), and the broader register of Karoo-acts-on-his-own-judgment-when-the-Strawhats-are-in-mortal-danger. The Karoo-as-Nami-escort beat is also the first instance of Karoo acting outside the Vivi-Karoo dyad — pre-loads the Karoo-treats-the-whole-Strawhat-crew-as-his-charge arc-pattern that recurs in Drum / Alabasta.
  • Cross-link Nami (escort-charge), Mr. 3 (the off-panel abductor whose wax-strike separates them), Doru Doru no Mi (Ch. 0119 first-combat-use evidence add).

Little Garden (Ch. 117) — continued mount-companion presence; QUACK!!! reaction to the ale explosion

Little Garden (Ch. 116) — Big — mute throughout; plays-dead with Usopp when Brogy notices the group; coward-allied with Usopp throughout the giant-encounter

  • Mute throughout the chapter. Plays dead with Usopp when Brogy notices the group (p.7).
  • Coward-allied with Usopp throughout the giant-encounter.
  • Cross-link Usopp (cowardice-pair partner), Brogy (new).

Little Garden (Ch. 115) — Little Garden of Adventure — bodyguard-tier role-upgrade via Vivi’s Karoo will protect me trust-declaration

Whisky Peak (Ch. 114)

  • Already on the Going Merry when Vivi is searching for him (pp. 3-4: “There you are!!! / QUACK! TA-DAH!”). Establishes Karoo’s I-know-where-the-action-is register — he boards independently.
  • Comic mis-ID gag (p. 18): Usopp sees the receding Bunchi-and-Karoo silhouette and exclaims “Aaah! A giant duck!!!” — first prop-coding of Karoo’s silhouette-as-mis-readable.

Whisky Peak (Ch. 112)

  • With Vivi behind cover during the Luffy-Zoro brawl + BW Officer-Agent attack (p. 15): QUACK! — first appearance in mount-companion shelter-protection combat-grammar (as opposed to mount-running speed, which was the Ch. 110 install).

Whisky Peak (Ch. 111) — The Secret Criminal Organization — top-speed mount-running through Sapoten Graveyard + Cactus Crag; QUACK!! on-page recurrence

  • Continues top-speed mount-running (page 2) — bounds down the stone steps of the Sapoten Graveyard ruined classical-arch gate, carrying Vivi to the escape. The Ch. 0110 KAROO RUN!! / TWO-LEGGED HORSE!! combat-mount register continues in this chapter.
  • QUACK!!! on-page (page 8) — Karoo carries Vivi at the chase-frontline alongside Igaram heading to Cactus Crag.
  • Co-flees with Igaram through the cactus-alleys; present at the Mr.-5 / Miss-Valentine confrontation but does not engage in combat.

Whisky Peak (Ch. 110) — The Night Isn’t Over — first on-page top-speed mount-running carrying Vivi; earnest-combat-tier register installed alongside the Ch. 109 comedic-incompetent register

Whisky Peak (Ch. 109) — A Question of Duty — first appearance; comedic-incompetent debut register

Notes

  • Two-spelling note: VIZ uses Karoo; Funimation/4Kids and the karugamo-direct romanization use Carue. Both refer to the same character. The VIZ spelling is the canonical form used in this vault.
  • Karoo is the first non-human Alabasta-faction character to appear on-page; pre-loads the Alabasta-saga animal-companion-mount register (camels, riding cranes, the Royal Guard’s spotbill squadron).
