Structural lore — what Oda has confirmed about this. Mysteries live in
Vault/Threads/.
What we know
- Ch. 128 p. 6: First on-page Marine use of an Eternal Pose. Smoker orders Tashigi to “Contact Headquarters and get an eternal pose” and sets course for Alabasta — establishing that the Marines requisition Eternal Poses from HQ as standard navigation resupply, and that the instrument is available to law-enforcement, not just Baroque Works. Fourth on-page faction-context for the Eternal Pose (after Alabasta royal-guard / Baroque-Works VP / Elbaf giant → now Marine HQ).
- Ch. 128 p. 12: First on-page operational possession of an Eternal Pose by the Strawhats. Sanji secures the Eternal Pose to Alabasta; the crew uses it to depart Little Garden despite the one-year Log-Pose reset — the bypass-route mechanic is finally used to advance the arc-objective.
- Ch. 117 p.13: First non-Baroque-Works on-page utterance of Eternal Pose — Dorry (giant warrior of Elbaf): ‘Perhaps, with the eternal pose. But it’s set to our homeland, Elbaph.’ Dorry/Brogy possess an Eternal Pose to Elbaf — currently framed as the stakes-object of the Hundred-Year-Duel (the winner gets the Pose; the loser stays here). Third independent on-page witness to the mechanism (Ch. 113 Igaram introduction → Ch. 114 Miss All Sunday demonstration → Ch. 117 Dorry mention). Each witness comes from a different organizational context (Alabasta royal-guard, Baroque-Works VP, Elbaf giant warrior) — installs the Eternal Pose as a world-mechanism available across all factions, not just a Baroque-Works tool.
- Ch. 113: First on-page introduction by Igaram (the Alabasta Eternal Pose).
- Ch. 114: Second on-page canonization. Miss All Sunday produces a small dome-glassed compass-instrument (distinct from the wrist-mounted Log Pose), sets it on the deck (THUNK!), snaps her fingers (SNAP!): “It’s the Eternal Pose! …It points to the island of nothing, which is one stop before Alabasta. It’s a route that even our agents don’t know about, so no one will follow you.” (p. 15).
- Ch. 114: An Eternal Pose is a permanent-magnetic-pointer locked to a single specific island — vs. the Log Pose’s sequential records-current-island-then-points-to-next mechanic. The Eternal Pose bypasses sequential route-walking.
- Ch. 114: Requires possession of a previously-recorded magnetic-imprint for the target island, which Baroque Works’ Vice President canonically has access to. The route Miss All Sunday’s Eternal Pose points to is not on the standard route even Baroque Works agents know about.
- Ch. 114: Can be physically destroyed by crushing — Luffy crushes it in his fist (p. 16, KRUNCH KRUNCH) and removes the option from the crew’s possible courses.
What it is
A wrist- or hand-sized compass-instrument housed in a glass dome, similar in form to the Log Pose but functionally distinct. Where the Log Pose records the current island’s magnetic field and re-points every time the crew moves, the Eternal Pose is permanently locked to a single magnetic-imprint, providing a fast-travel anchor to a specific destination.
Chronology / structure
- Log Pose: sequential, route-following, records-then-points. The default Grand-Line navigation instrument.
- Eternal Pose: locked, destination-specific, bypass-route. The fast-travel exception.
- Together: the Log Pose handles the next island; the Eternal Pose handles a specific island far ahead. Crews can carry multiple Eternal Poses for different destinations.
- Jaya leg (Ch. 222): the Log-Pose-vs-Eternal-Pose tension is restated (pp. 6-8) as an arc-driving constraint — sailing to Jaya now risks leaving before the Log Pose locks the next magnetic field, so the crew plans a short Jaya stop and departs before reset. Robin’s stolen Jaya Eternal Pose is the bypass-anchor that makes the detour viable.
