Profile

• A sky island named on-page for the first time at Ch. 219 p. 9, read off a hand-drawn map Luffy salvages from a sunken ship. The map is the Straw Hats’ first concrete evidence that an island floats above the clouds.
• At this point in canon Skypiea is only a named destination on a possibly-fake map — Nami warns “there are a lot of fake maps in the world” (p. 10). Nothing of its inhabitants, geography, or lore is yet shown.
• Tied mechanically to the Log Pose pointing straight up (Log Pose) and to the 200-year-old South Blue exploration ship (South Blue / St. Briss) that fell from the sky.
• As of Ch. 237 the crew has only reached the cloud-sea level (the White-White Sea / “Sky Ocean,” the middle level of the Emperor Cloud); the Log Pose still points up, so Skypiea proper is not yet reached or named this chapter. The proper names “Skypiea” / “Angel Island” / “Upper Yard” as the destination island are forward-canon; the destination sky-island is distinct from the cloud-sea arrival location (White-White Sea).
• As of Ch. 238 the destination is named on-page as “Godland Skypiea” (p.17), framed as a theocratic land of an “omnipotent Kami and his vassals.” It is the upper stratum / White-White Sea, 33,000 ft above the Blue Sea, reached past Heaven’s Gate for a toll of one billion extols per person. Inspector Amazon files a report framing unpaid/illegal entry as grounds for “heavenly judgment” — see Godland Skypiea Render Heavenly Judgment Seed. Angel Island / Angel Beach (the entry locale) is not yet shown on-page as of this chapter.
• As of Ch. 239 the crew arrives in Skypiea proper and stands on it on-page for the first time. The cloud belt at its entrance is arched with the words “GODLAND SKYPIEA” (p. 3); captioned “Skypiea, Land of the Gods on the White-White Sea” (p. 4). It sits on the White-White Sea, a sea made of cloud; the island itself (beaches, ground, cities) is built of solid-yet-soft Island Cloud (see Skypiea Cloud-Ocean and Island Cloud Material). Inhabited by winged “angel” Skypieans (e.g. Conis, Pagaya) who use Dial (sea-shell) technology (see Dials Skypiean Sea-Shell Technology). Residents call the lower world “the Blue Sea.” This is the Skypiea named on the map Luffy found and in Noland’s legend — the place the “galleon that fell from the sky 200 years ago” came from.
• As of Ch. 240 Conis and Pagaya give the crew the first guided tour of sky-island life: dials (the engine of Skypiean civilization — “The civilization of Skypiea owes much to Dial Power”), wavers, and cloud cosmology (Sea/Island Clouds, the Cloud Quarry, Milky Roads, keratin + pyrobloin). The chapter ends by naming the Upper Yard — “the domain of the Kami” — as the one place in Skypiea you must never go; Nami unknowingly wavers toward it.
• As of Ch. 241 Skypiea’s law-and-order structure is shown on-page: it is ruled by the “kami” Enel, who enforces a one-billion-extol-per-person entry fee (non-payers are “illegal trespassers” / “criminals”) and metes out “Heaven’s Judgment” (see Heaven’s Judgment, Skypiea Entry Fee and Criminal System). Enforcement is split between Enel’s priests/hunters (who run down trespassers and collect their heads for bounty) and the White Berets (Skypiea police), introduced under Captain McKinley searching Lovely Street, Angel Island for the Straw Hats.
• As of Ch. 243 a map of Skypiea is shown (page 16) labeling the Sacrificial Altar, Upper Yard, Angel Island, the Milky Road route, and a compass. There are “several hundred Milky Roads in all,” teeming with man-eating (gigantic sky) fish; trespassers are branded “Class-2 criminals.” A descent route to the Blue Sea exists via Cloud’s End at the far east of the White Sea (pages 4–5, 16). • Angel Island — the island Angel Beach belongs to (Ch. 239 p. 13, “This is Angel Beach in Skypiea”).
• Upper Yard — the sacred forbidden “domain of the Kami,” bordering Angel Island; named at chapter’s end (Ch. 240 p. 17).
• Sacrificial Altar — north-east of the Upper Yard; where the Special Lobster Express delivers offerings (Ch. 243 pp. 14, 16).

Etymology

スカイピア (Sukaipia) is a portmanteau of English “sky” + “utopia” — a sky-utopia, paradise-in-the-clouds — which is exactly how the arc frames it: “Land of the Gods,” “angels,” winged people in a serene cloud paradise (with a darker theocratic underbelly under Enel).

One Piece Wiki also flags the idiom “pie in the sky” — something you hope for but is very unlikely to happen — mirroring how everyone around the Straw Hats deemed reaching a sky island impossible (the -pia literally contains “pie”… “in the sky”). A neat second layer rather than a competing reading.

Real-world model. Per Rurubu One Piece, Skypiea’s look was inspired by Guatemala; more broadly its history (Skypieans displacing the indigenous Shandia from their homeland) parallels the European conquest of the Americas.
