  • **Sanji is the fourth Straw Hat — recruitment completed on-page** (pages 7-8). The chapter is the formal *recruitment-resolution* for the Sanji arc that has been built since Ch. 43. Sanji to Luffy (page 7): *'I'll go. ... Take me with you. ... Sanji, you... I might as well sail with you on your quest to become King of the Pirates. We both have foolish dreams... So I'll chase mine, too.'* Luffy's response: *'You've got yourself a cook.'* / *'HOORAY!!! OKAY!!!'* (page 8, splash hero-grin). The crew expands to four — Luffy, Zoro, Nami (in-absentia, currently fled with the Going Merry), Sanji. **The chapter-title 'The Fourth Person' canonizes the count.** The crew now has a *role-named member* for every position discussed since Ch. 42: captain, swordsman, navigator, sniper, **cook**.
  • Sanji Joins Crew Setup
  • **Zeff's *acting* is exposed by the cooks' applause-laughter** (pages 9, 14-15) — *'You fools weren't exactly whispering. Your acting is crap-bad, Patty.'* (page 9, Sanji to Patty). The Baratie cooks **staged** a chase-off scene to give Sanji emotional permission to leave. The *crew-loyalty-via-staged-rejection* device — a master who pretends to despise the disciple so the disciple can leave without guilt — is the chapter's emotional pivot. Then on page 15, the cooks attack Sanji with frying pans and ladles (*'SAY YOUR PRAYERS, SANJI!!! We've been saving this up for years!!!'*) — also revealed as **staged combat** (next-page payoff: the cooks club themselves, *'They never had a chance'*). The Baratie's culture of *aggression-as-affection* (the Ch. 47 Patty/Sanji insult-trades, the *crap-geezer/crap-hat* register) reaches its **structural-grammar payoff**: every visible Baratie-cook interaction is *love-disguised-as-violence*.
  • **Zeff's *'I owe you my life'* declaration to Sanji on his exit** (page 17, large composition) — Sanji bows, single tear running, to the assembled cooks: *'...I lived under your crap-roof... all these years...'* / *'I'll never forget you!!!! I owe you my life!!!'* The Ch. 56-58 debt-direction is **inverted on the final goodbye-line** — Sanji has always carried the *I-owe-Zeff* debt (the leg-eating fact), but on the way out he names the inverse: *I owe my life to all of you*. The debt-arc closes with Sanji **acknowledging the debt aloud** in a register that matches Zeff's prior *'I don't want any favors'* (Ch. 59 page 2): the debt is now *spoken-and-mutually-acknowledged*, neither rejected nor coerced. The recruitment-pattern's *prior-allegiance-dissolution* beat completes with a *spoken thank-you* rather than a *combat-rupture*.
  • **Yosaku reports Nami is heading for *an unbelievable place*** (page 6) — *'We didn't catch her, but by the wake of sister Nami's ship... we were able to roughly guess her course. ... If our calculations were correct, she's headed for an unbelievable place.'* The line is the chapter's **next-arc trigger** — Nami's destination (Arlong Park, in the next arc) is teased without naming. The *Cocoyasi/Arlong Park* arc-question (*why did Nami steal the ship?*) is now operationally Luffy's pursuit-target. The chapter sets the **next arc's destination vector** off-page.
  • **The *customer is king* / *reason to keep fighting* doctrine** (pages 10-11) — Sanji, alone in the empty restaurant after Zeff's reciprocal-insult-affection scene, narrates: *'Blood-thirsty cutthroats or escaped convicts... if they're hungry and can make it to this restaurant... then there's a reason for us... to keep fighting.'* The Baratie's combat-doctrine (cooks who fight for the right to serve every customer regardless of moral category) gets its **valedictory articulation** from Sanji as he leaves. The doctrine is the *gift Sanji takes from the Baratie* into the Straw Hat crew — *fight to feed*, regardless of who shows up hungry. Forward-payoff: every Sanji-feeds-the-hungry beat in subsequent arcs (the starving Punk Hazard kids, the Whole Cake bento, etc.) traces to this exit-doctrine articulation.
  • **The Baratie name is shown explicitly on the building's banner for the first time** (page 11, page 16). The restaurant's full name *BARATIE* is rendered in large banner-letters on the hull-sign. Prior chapters have used the name in dialogue; this chapter foregrounds the **wordmark** as the visual goodbye. The chapter's establishing-shot register foregrounds the Baratie *as a recognizable place* the reader is being asked to remember.
  • **Luffy proposes Yosaku and Johnny join the pursuit-crew** (page 6) — Yosaku: *'Come with me!! Anyway, we need your strength, brother Luffy. I'll tell you the details later!'* The Ch. 42 bounty-hunter pair's *recurring-ally* status is operationally extended into the next arc — they will guide the Straw Hats to Nami's destination. Yosaku/Johnny remain in the *side-cast-aiding-the-main-crew* role rather than crew-recruit; the chapter installs the *bounty-hunter-as-pursuit-pilot* sub-role.
  • **Cover page (Part 23: 'Suspicious Parts')**: Cabaji-and-Mohji-style silhouette/coded figures with a giant **question mark inside a Buggy-style frame**, and *small Buggy figures* between/in front of them. The Buggy-cover-story takes a sharp tonal-shift after the Ch. 60 Part-19 *Ritchie-as-captain* climax: the cover-story is now playing with *suspicious figures* — Buggy's **former crew (Mohji + Cabaji)** appears to be approaching, with Buggy small and uncertain in the foreground (the chapter title *'Suspicious Parts'* hints at a *reunification* arc). The Ch. 60 *Ritchie's Pirate Crew* tableau is being **structurally complicated** by the return of the *original* Buggy officers.

Summary

The Baratie arc’s recruitment-resolution chapter. The chapter opens (page 1) with the Buggy cover splash (Part 23: “Suspicious Parts”) — a tall question-mark-framed silhouette of two figures (Mohji-and-Cabaji-coded) looming over a small Buggy-figure who clutches a rope, signaling the original Buggy-Pirates officers may be approaching the cover-story’s wandering survivor.

The chapter proper opens (page 2) on a wide-shot of the Baratie at sea with the Krieg flagship’s wreckage offstage. Luffy (in a dialogue with someone off-panel): “With me? … Take Sanji…” Cut to Luffy’s grin under the straw hat (DOOON!!!): “No way.” Patty (page 2 bottom): “Why not, boy? Don’t you need a cook for your ship!? Isn’t he good enough for you?” Cooks (chorus): “THU-D!! WHAT!!?”

Inside the dining-room (page 3): Luffy at a table eating his second bowl (MUNCH MUNCH… SECONDS?); Zoro lounging on a chair behind, sword across his lap; cooks arguing. Patty: “But he said he wants to stay here. … You can’t decide for him. He has to do it.” Luffy: “I’d love to have Sanji for our cook. But who knows whether that crazy crap-kid will agree to it. So you won’t take him unless he agrees to go?” Patty: “Well, fair enough.” Luffy: “That’s right.” Cooks (laughing): “HA HA HA HA! MORE SOUP!” Patty (deadpan, looking at Sanji off-frame): “I don’t think he will. He’s stubborn.” Sanji (silent panel, , smoke from his face — listening).

Pages 4-5 — Yosaku and Johnny arrive in their skiff (SPLASH! AAAGH!!!) and crash into the Baratie’s window (SPLOOSH!!!). Yosaku slides face-first across the floor (BA-DUMP), Johnny pratfalls over him (A MERMAN!? WHAT IS IT!?). Sanji from the kitchen: “It’s a man and a panda-shark, moron! He came all the way from Fish-Man Island to eat our food!?” Cooks recognize them: “Yosaku!!” Luffy (kneeling next to the heap): “Why are you alone!? Where are the others!? And Nami!?” Yosaku (eyes spinning): “Unh… brother Luffy!!”

Page 6 — Nami’s destination report. Yosaku: “We didn’t catch her, but by the wake of sister Nami’s ship… we were able to roughly guess her course. If our calculations were correct, she’s headed for an unbelievable place.” Luffy (grinning): “You were? Then we can go get her!” Yosaku: “Come with me!! Anyway, we need your strength, brother Luffy. I’ll tell you the details later!” Luffy (rising): “OKAY! BUT I DON’T GET IT.” / “NO, I DO GET IT!! LET’S GO!!” Sanji (page 6 bottom, in profile, ?): “WAIT.”

Page 7 — The recruitment, on-page. Sanji leans against a column in the empty galley, arms crossed, cigarette in mouth, in profile: “I’ll go.” Luffy (off-frame): “Take me with you.” Cut to Luffy’s silent reaction (single beat-mark, ) — then aloud: “Sanji, you…” Cooks watch from the doorway in shock (WHAT!?). Sanji turns, head bowed, speech filling the panel: “I might as well sail with you on your quest to become King of the Pirates. We both have foolish dreams… So I’ll chase mine, too.”

Page 8 — Recruitment sealed. Sanji (half-smile, smoke curling): “Okay? Not okay?” Luffy (full-panel close-up): “You’ve got yourself a cook.” Then the splash (HOORAY!!! OKAY!!!) — Luffy in extreme close-up, mouth full-open joy-shout, fists raised. Sanji (smoking, back-shot, embarrassed-shoulder-tilt): “I caused you a lot of trouble.” Luffy (background, hopping around with Yosaku): “HOORAY! HOORAY! A COOK!!! YAHOO!” / “So, that’s that.” / “YEAH!! THIS IS GREAT, BROTHER LUFFY!!”

Page 9 — The acting-as-affection reveal. Sanji approaches Zeff (in profile, smoking): “You fools weren’t exactly whispering.” Zeff: “You knew!? Your acting is crap-bad, Patty. Now you go and decide to jump ship. Hmph. I don’t like it!!” Zeff (livid, ladle raised, HMPH!): “I was going to throw you out with my own hands.” Sanji: “Before you go, I’m gonna teach you to talk nice!! You went to some trouble to chase me off.” Zeff: “Eh, crap-geezer?” Cooks gasp (’!’). Sanji (smoking, half-smile): “Enjoy the rest of your life.” Zeff: “Fine, crap-geezer. Oh yeah? Not a day goes by that I don’t regret saving your worthless life. You know, baby eggplant, I never liked kids.” The reciprocal-insult-affection register lands in its purest form — both men profess regret while saying the warmest goodbyes the series has yet composed.

Pages 10-11 — Sanji alone in the restaurant; the reason to keep fighting doctrine. Sanji packs up; Patty asks: “How many days will you be sailing?” Sanji (lighting a smoke, PLIP…): “Who knows.” Cook: “You want more supplies!?” / “More meat.” Wide-shot (page 10 right): the Going Merry-style skiff being prepared with supplies; cooks moving crates (‘Sure, she belongs to Sanji.’ / ‘Can we really take her!?’ / ‘This ship’s a beauty!’). Cut (page 10 lower) to Sanji standing in the empty dining-room, his hand on a chair-back (rattle…), narrating internally: “That Sanji…!!! Blood-thirsty cutthroats or escaped convicts… if they’re hungry and can make it to this restaurant… then there’s a reason for us… to keep fighting.” Page 11 — the empty restaurant under stained-glass light (large composition); Sanji’s profile in close-up, lit by sun-rays: “…to keep fighting.” (’…’). The doctrine lands in a valedictory register — Sanji is leaving the Baratie with the doctrine, taking the fight-to-feed axiom into the Straw Hat crew.

Pages 11-12 — Zeff’s I sank my whole fortune into this place private-line. Zeff (large outside-shot of the Baratie, full hull wordmark BARATIE visible): “That’s right. I sank my whole fortune into it, and I still owe a heap. It’s gonna be a bustling place!!! Never fear, Sanji’s here!!” Cook: “Amazing, crap-geezer!! So this is Baratie, the oceangoing restaurant!?” Page 12 — Sanji warns Zeff: “Don’t start smoking. It’ll scuttle your sense of taste.” Zeff (coughing, ACK KOFF KOFF): “Sorry, crap-baby eggplant. Stop calling me baby eggplant, crap-geezer.” Sanji laughs (HEE HEE!): “Now I’m a man!!” Cook: “Is this ‘help wanted: crap-cooks welcome’ for real? Hey!! Is this ‘Red Shoes’ Zeff’s grub shop!!?”the Red Shoes Zeff epithet is on-page again as the Baratie’s owner-name attracting cook-applicants.

Page 13 — The chef-recruitment montage / the Baratie’s future. Patty: “Chef!! Sanji almost killed another customer!!!” Sanji (chasing a customer with a knife, AAGH! EEK! WAH!): “Want to say that again!?” Patty (interrupting, hand-on-Sanji, WAH BWAH!): “You hear about the proprietor? They say he’s a failed pirate.” Sanji (grabbing Patty by the collar, KLUNK!!): “Idiot! We can’t serve this slop to customers! You eat it!” Cook: “Slop slingers!!! If you value your lives, give us all the food you’ve got!” (the customer-bandits comedy beat). Patty (chasing customers with a chef’s knife, BWAHAHA HAHA): “Every last crumb!!!” / “C’mon, we gotta stop chef!!” / “Don’t you annoy my cooks!” The Baratie’s chaotic-energy-future is composed as a montage. Sanji and Zeff (small, foreground): “Did he say something?” / “HUH? I DIDN’T HEAR NOTHIN’!!!” — the affectionate-deafness of the two leads punctuates the future-Baratie tableau.

Page 14 — Sanji late on his recruitment day, returning. Wide-shot of the Baratie; Yosaku (small, on the loading dock): “Our new cook-brother’s late.” Cooks (chorus, looking down the dock): “Oh, there he is.” Pan to Sanji walking up the gangway carrying his small bag, the cooks lined up in white uniforms — Patty and Carne foregrounded, ladles and meat-cleavers in hand. Sanji (cigarette in mouth, hands in pockets, suit, looking down): ”…”. The composition is the honor-guard send-off before the staged-attack.

Page 15 — The cooks attack Sanji with kitchen weapons (staged). Patty (ladle raised): ”!?” Carne (meat-cleaver raised): ”!?” Then the two charge (SAY YOUR PRAYERS, SANJI!!! We’ve been saving this up for years!!!). Cut to Sanji (foreground, in profile, hands in pockets, calm, smoke-trail) and behind him — KLOMP… KLOMP… KLOMP… KLOMP… — both cooks face-down on the deck. Caption (narrative): “They never had a chance.” The pratfall is composed under the same SFX as Zeff’s peg-leg footfalls (KLOMP…) — the cooks who tried to fight Sanji as a goodbye are silently dropped by Zeff (or by some other off-frame agent — the page is composed to imply Zeff’s intervention without showing the strike).

Page 16 — The dock farewell. Yosaku on the loading-rail: “Hey, Sanji.” Sanji turns to Patty/Carne (laid out behind): “Aren’t you gonna say goodbye?” Sanji: “That’s okay. Let’s go.” The Baratie’s full wordmark RESTAURANT BARATIE fills the middle panel as Sanji walks down the gangway. Bottom of page (KEEP YOUR FEET DRY). Then the chapter’s emotional pivot: Sanji freezes mid-step (’!!!’), close-ups on Zeff (foreground, eyes wide), Patty/Carne (eyes wide), and Luffy (background, mouth open, ’…’). Sanji’s whisper: “CHEF ZEFF!!!”

Page 17 — The bow-and-shout farewell (full-page composition). Wide-shot from behind: Sanji on the dock, both hands flat on the deck, forehead pressed to the wood, in deep bow. Behind him — the cooks lining the railing, Zeff at center wearing a captain-coat over chef’s whites. Speech bubbles around the composition: ”…I lived under your crap-roof… all these years… I’ll never forget you!!!! I owe you my life!!!” The Baratie sign RESTAURANT BARATIE arches over the entire composition. The chapter’s emotional payoff lands in a single page — the bow is the prior-allegiance-dissolution beat made physical.

Page 18 — Coloring Corner: a sideways promotional sketch (likely a Be Happy with One Piece coloring page) showing the Straw Hat crew (Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji presumably, plus the bounty-hunter duo) in cartoon-poses with the RE HAPPY WITH ONE PIECE banner; the coloring page is a paratextual element, not a story beat.

New reveals

  • Sanji joins the Straw Hat crew on-page (pages 7-8). The chapter-title (The Fourth Person) canonizes the count — the Straw Hats are now a four-member crew with a named cook. The Ch. 45 recruitment-offer (Sanji Joins Crew Setup) and Ch. 52 chore-boy bargain (Sanji Recruitment Bargain Setup) both operationally resolve. Sanji’s recruitment-condition resolution chain runs cleanly across Ch. 43-68 with every condition (offer / withheld-reason / release / dream / debt / external-pressure / coward-rebuke / final-decision) on-page in chronological order. The Ch. 6-21-41-68 Straw Hat recruitment-cadence (a recruit per ~20 chapters) now has a four-recruit empirical pattern. See Straw Hat Recruitment Pattern (massive update).
  • The Baratie cooks staged a rejection-scene to give Sanji emotional permission to leave (pages 9, 13). Sanji exposes the acting (“You fools weren’t exactly whispering. Your acting is crap-bad, Patty.”) and Zeff confirms (“I was going to throw you out with my own hands.”). The Baratie’s aggression-as-affection culture reaches its structural-grammar payoff. The recruitment-pattern’s prior-allegiance-dissolution beat is here composed as a collaborative theatrical performance — the master and the cooks act against Sanji so Sanji can leave with dignity. This is the first instance in the series of staged-rejection-as-recruitment-permission.
  • The Ch. 15 cooks-attack-Sanji is also staged (page 15). The cooks raise weapons (“SAY YOUR PRAYERS, SANJI!!! We’ve been saving this up for years!!!”) and immediately collapse face-down (KLOMP… KLOMP). Caption: “They never had a chance.” The staged-violence pattern is recursive — even the combat-rite goodbye is theatrical. The Baratie’s send-off uses every grammar of rejection (verbal mockery, professional dismissal, combat-attack) as disguised expressions of affection. The doctrine: in the Baratie, every act of hostility is a love-letter.
  • Zeff is composed as the acting master — he names Sanji his “I don’t like it!!” replacement-disappointment, says he never liked kids, but loads Sanji’s ship with supplies and stands at the railing for the bow-farewell. The crap-geezer/crap-hat verbal-affection-code (Crap-Geezer Crap-Hat Verbal Affection Code) gets its definitive scene — the goodbye is composed entirely in insult-register and the chapter’s most emotionally weighted line (Sanji’s “I owe you my life”) lands in honorific-register (Chef Zeff!!!) only when Sanji’s back is to the master.
  • The customer is king / reason to keep fighting doctrine (pages 10-11) — Sanji’s valedictory articulation. “Blood-thirsty cutthroats or escaped convicts… if they’re hungry and can make it to this restaurant… then there’s a reason for us… to keep fighting.” The Baratie’s combat-doctrine becomes the gift Sanji takes into the Straw Hat crew. Forward-payoff: every Sanji-feeds-the-enemy / Sanji-feeds-the-starving beat in subsequent arcs (Punk Hazard kids, Wano kids, Whole Cake bento) traces here.
  • Nami is headed for an unbelievable place (page 6) — Yosaku’s report. The next arc’s destination is teased without naming. This is the Arlong Park arc trigger in operational form. The next chapter will detail the unbelievable place (Cocoyasi village, Arlong’s domain). The Ch. 49 Nami steals the Going Merry mystery now has a destination-direction but not a motive-direction.
  • The Baratie’s BARATIE wordmark is foregrounded as the visual goodbye (pages 11, 16, 17). The restaurant’s full name is rendered in banner-letters across the hull-sign for the chapter’s exit sequence. The chapter’s establish-then-leave compositional grammar uses the wordmark to make the location re-recognizable as a return-target for later arcs (the Baratie recurs in cover-story and reunion arcs).
  • Yosaku and Johnny are folded into the pursuit-team as bounty-hunter pilots (page 6). The recurring-side-cast role is operationalized: they will pilot the Straw Hats to Nami’s destination. The Ch. 42 introduction → Ch. 51 origin-flashback → Ch. 68 pursuit-pilot cadence canonizes Yosaku/Johnny as the East Blue side-cast prototype (recurring-ally pair who guide the main crew between arcs).
  • The Going Merry is replaced for this chapter by a smaller dinghy/skiff (page 10 right, page 17). The Going Merry is off-page (Nami fled with it Ch. 49); the Sanji-recruitment chapter is conducted from a small loaned-vessel. The crew’s ship-disposition for the Arlong arc is: Going Merry stolen + pursuit-vessel borrowed. The chapter quietly stages the ship-recovery as a sub-goal for the next arc.
  • Cover page (Part 23: ‘Suspicious Parts’): After the Ch. 60 Part 19 — Ritchie’s Pirate Crew climax, the Buggy-cover-story enters a suspicious-figures arc — Mohji-and-Cabaji-coded silhouettes loom behind a small uncertain Buggy. The Buggy-Pirates original-officers reunion sub-arc begins. The cover-story’s emotional payload pivots from survival-comedy (Parts 1-19) to reunification-anxiety (Part 23+). Forward-payoff: the eventual Buggy/Mohji/Cabaji reunion in Loguetown (Ch. 99) is being staged in advance through the cover-story.
