Chapter 154: On to Alabasta

New reveals

• Ace debuts on-page. Black-coated, wide-brimmed hat, freckled grin, NUK NUK pipe-smoke. Introduces himself by first name only — “The name’s Ace.” (p. 5). His goal: pursuing Blackbeard, “the pirate who ravaged our country” (Dalton). He has a Whitebeard-tattoo-style mark visible on his back-shoulder area through the open coat (p. 5, p. 7 — partial spade-like tattoo glimpse).
• Will of D. articulated on-page for the first time. Dr. Kureha — after the visitor (Ace) asks if she has heard of Gol D. Roger — completes the lineage-grammar herself: “So the will of ‘D.’… lives on.” (p. 8). This is the first time in the series the phrase Will of D. is spoken. (Ch. 100 had “an inherited strength of will” in posthumous-Roger voice; Ch. 105 introduced Monkey D. Dragon; but the Will of D. nomenclature itself is uttered here for the first time, by a doctor 139 years old who immediately recognizes the visitor as kin to Roger.)
• Hiriluk’s Jolly Roger becomes the flag of the nation. Opening pages canonize that the cherry-blossom-eyepatch skull-and-crossbones flying over Drum Castle is now “the unusual flag” of “this nameless nation” — “in time, the tale of ‘Hiriluk’s Cherry Blossoms’ shining in the night… would become a symbol of this nameless nation’s hard-won freedom.” (pp. 1-2). The kingdom is canonically nameless now; Wapol’s regime is over; the new identity is pending.
• Robelu Town named on-page (p. 4) as the Drum settlement where Ace appeared a week prior.
• Ace identified by Luffy’s wanted poster. Dalton recognizes Luffy from the 30M-berry poster Ace produced (p. 4): “There’s a bounty of 30 million berries on that boy’s head.”
• Bon Clay a.k.a. Mr. 2 — visual debut (pp. 15-16). Caption: BON CLAY a.k.a. MR. 2 (OFFICER AGENT) BAROQUE WORKS. Black-and-white tutu with swans on hips, makeup with a swan-and-tear motif, ballerina pose, “oh come my way” / okama-way self-coding (an おかま道 way-of-the-okama dojo-style banner in the background, pp. 16-17). Cashes the Ch. 117 / Ch. 127 / Ch. 129 named-before-shown sequence.
• Mr. 2’s mission revealed. Crocodile (off-screen) had ordered Mr. 2 “to get rid of Mr. 3 between Alabasta and Little Garden” (p. 17). Bon Clay’s crew somehow sailed straight from Alabasta to Little Garden without crossing paths with Mr. 3 — Mr. 3 has slipped the kill-order net. The Officer-Agent purge of Ch. 127 has structurally failed; Mr. 3 is still loose (and, forward-canon, captured by Smoker).
• Chopper is formally a Straw Hat. “To our new shipmate!” / “HOORAY!!” (pp. 13-14). Sanji declares Chopper “our ship’s doctor-Tony Tony Chopper” (p. 13). The recruitment arc opened in Ch. 134 closes here on-screen.
• Karoo survived the Drum-mountain river plunge (p. 9-10). Sanji has fished a frozen Karoo from the river; “He’s been frozen this whole time.” / “Karoo’s alive.”
• Drum-arc cover-page caption confirms the chapter as Vol. 17’s opening (chapter title is the volume-cover beat). The frontispiece “Django’s Dance Heaven, Vol. 22” cover-story continues — “The Mighty Captain of the Navy’s Main Fleet” — Django splash-page.

• Pages 1-2 — Splash: Hiriluk’s Jolly Roger over a moonlit, snow-blossoming Drum Castle. “In time, the tale of ‘Hiriluk’s Cherry Blossoms’ shining in the night… would become a symbol of this nameless nation’s hard-won freedom. But the birth of a new country with its unusual flag… is a story for another time.” Triple-narration deferring the kingdom’s rebirth to forward-canon. Cover-page composition: the snow-mantled multi-spire castle silhouette pairs visually with Ch. 148’s first castle-reveal and Ch. 150’s Wapol-homecoming — same castle, three lighting-states (overcast/dawn/moonlit).

• Page 5 — Ace’s face reveal: freckled cheeks, sharp toothy grin, hat pulled low, smoking. “The name’s Ace.” First on-page name-utterance.
• Pages 7-8 — Kureha’s Will of D. doctrine. Three-panel sequence: Kureha (sunglasses lowered, face-front) saying “…the will of ‘D’… lives on”; cut to the Merry on moonlit water with the crew laughing; cut back to Chopper looking up at the cherry-blossom sky. Visual mirror: Ace’s silhouette walking away (p. 6) compositionally pairs with the Roger / Will-of-D. inheritor-walking-away visual register that the series cycles every D.-reveal. • Page 13 — Sanji’s caption-frame: “OUR SHIP’S DOCTOR — TONY TONY CHOPPER” (presentation gesture). The on-deck welcome-the-new-shipmate composition mirrors Ch. 24 (Zoro), Ch. 41 (Nami), Ch. 95 (Sanji) crew-acceptance frames — the Straw Hat recruitment-acceptance-frame visual grammar is now five chapters deep.
• Page 14 — Splash: Merry’s KA-CHANK!!! / KSH!! sail-deployment cluster shot. “And so, the Merry sailed for the desert kingdom of Alabasta at maximum speed.” Arc-pivot composition.
• Pages 15-16 — Bon Clay full-body ballerina pose with two-tone tutu, swan-makeup, Mr. 2 (Officer Agent) Baroque Works caption. The おかま道 (“okama-way”) calligraphy banner fills the page background — character-as-doctrine visual register.

Cover story

Vol. 22 of Django’s Dance Heaven — “The Mighty Captain of the Navy’s Main Fleet.” Django is shown in full-page dance-leap action surrounded by Marine-jacketed underlings (collapsing? falling? on their backs around him). Forward-context: Django, after his Ch. 41 Black-Cat-Pirates defeat, has joined the Navy under Captain Fullbody and rises through it.
