Etymology

Confidence: high · “Hody Jones” is built on Davy Jones — the centuries-old English sailor’s-folklore name for the malevolent spirit of the sea; “Davy Jones’s Locker” is the seabed where drowned sailors come to rest. An apt handle for a fish-man who lurks at the bottom of the sea, preys on passing human pirates, and sinks their ships (his @0611 debut, drowning Gyro’s crew). Secondary layer: “Jones” (ジョーンズ Jōnzu) is a near-homophone of “Jaws” (ジョーズ Jōzu), the iconic great-white-shark film — matching his on-page species, a great white shark fish-man. • His vengeance turns on his own people: “Fall, Noah, fall! Slaughter these fish-men who have lost their pride!” — ordering the ark dropped on the very fish-men he claimed to avenge (p. 11).

• Reveals he is Queen Otohime’s true killer (pp. 15-17): “I’m the one who killed her!!” He paid a human pirate to snipe and burn the signature box, shot Otohime himself in the confusion, then “killed that human patsy and set him up as the assassin” — a deliberate false-flag to pin the queen’s death on humans. Motive: she had nearly persuaded the island to “make peace with their oppressors,” threatening the hatred Hody needed. This resolves the @0626/@0627 “who really killed Otohime” mystery. • Strikes down Madam Sharley (pp. 13-14) after she prophesies Luffy will destroy the island and that Hody will “never be the conqueror of this island.” Names her as Arlong’s sister: “I looked up to your brother Arlong… but I’m not like your brother!”
