Punk Hazard

Etymology

“Punk Hazard” reads as an English compound. “Hazard” is straightforward chemical/bio-hazard danger (hazmat, biohazard) — apt for a poison-gas weapons-research facility “in no state to support life,” ringed by a DANGER / KEEP OUT gate. “Punk” echoes Dr. Vegapunk: the island is revealed within the arc to have been his former World Government laboratory (Ch. 658–Ch. 664), so the name’s “Punk” morpheme retroactively points at its creator. The One Piece Wiki notes the island’s poisoned, abandoned, sealed-off fate parallels Pripyat / the Chernobyl disaster (a thematic, not name, parallel). The Vegapunk-morpheme link is inference (no SBS gloss); the “hazard = chemical danger” surface is firm. Confidence: medium.

• Ch. 655 — first mentioned and first appearance: the burning island, the “PUNK HAZARD — ENTRANCE” gate, the off-limits “accident four years ago” status, the distress call, the dragon, and the leopard-print woman silhouette.
• Ch. 656 — (“BACK ON PUNK HAZARD,” p. 18) the Straw Hat landing party (Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, Robin) battles the giant fire-breathing dragon — felled by Zoro’s one-sword Iai “Death Lion Song” — and recovers a living bisected samurai (a still-alive pair of legs) lodged in it, who flees vowing revenge on a Warlord. Beyond the cell door is a room overflowing with gigantic children (pp. 17-18). The recovered samurai’s still-living severed head is in the cell, identified as a samurai of the Land of Wano by his topknot.
• Ch. 658 — (“The Biscuits Room”) the origin of the fire/ice split is revealed: Smoker’s G-5 Marines recount that Admirals Akainu and Aokiji “chose Punk Hazard to be their dueling ground,” and their clash was “a battle fierce enough to change the entire climate of the island” (p. 19) — the scar that bisected the island. The same recap places the island’s ruin on Vegapunk’s chemical-weapons experiment that “failed four years ago,” and notes the present gas is “unnatural — shouldn’t be this thick,” with the island barren and “no longer toxic” two years ago (pp. 18-19) — seeding that someone is keeping the island hidden. Inside the facility, the four captured Straw Hats break out through the shock-absorbing “Biscuits Room” door with a mob of captive giant children; “the Master” (branded “CC,” laser-armed like the Pacifistas) and his leopard/giraffe centaur patrols close in. • Ch. 659 — Vice Admiral Smoker’s G-5 battleship reaches the island, tracing a transmission across the iceberg-choked New-World sea; the Straw Hat parties cross the half-boiling/half-frozen lake on Usopp’s banana boat. Vegapunk’s former laboratory is named on-page on the icy side (p. 10), and the chapter ends with the lab door opening on the Warlord Trafalgar Law, revealed as the island’s resident Warlord — he declares Punk Hazard “off-limits.” The fire/ice extremes are likened to “being caught in the gaze of both Akainu and Aokiji” (p. 2).
• Ch. 660 — (“Trafalgar Law, Warlord of the Sea”) inside Vegapunk’s lab, the body-swapped Straw Hats shepherd the captive giant children past a chamber of frozen giant corpses (the “Frozen Ones,” pp. 6–7) and burst out onto the snowy surface in the “Franky Tank.” At the lab’s front entrance, the Warlord Trafalgar Law confronts Vice-Admiral Smoker’s G-5 marines — recounting Law’s Sabaody/war/Roswald record — refuses a lab inspection (“my vacation home now”), and uses “Room”/“Takt” to hoist a ship and a slab of the frozen riverbed into midair, trapping the Marines on the island. • Ch. 661 — (“Lakeside Bandits”) the central “lake” is revealed to be pure seawater infested with sharks — its crater was “ground zero for the Akainu–Aokiji duel,” whose giant cracks in the island’s crust let the ocean flood in (pp. 5-6), explaining the sharks “in a lake.” Brownbeard’s crocodile-centaur “lakeside bandits” raid Team Luffy’s boat for their warm coats until Brook routs them (freezing their gun barrels) and clears the sharks. At the lab’s front entrance the Warlord Trafalgar Law fights Vice-Admiral Smoker’s G-5 — having cut their warship in half and fused it to the island — confiscates every Marine transponder snail with “Scan” so nothing reaches HQ, and his Devil Fruit is named on-page for the first time: the Op-Op Fruit (pp. 15-19).
• Ch. 662 — (“Warlord Law vs. Vice Admiral Smoker”) on the ice side, the Warlord Trafalgar Law fights Vice-Admiral Smoker’s G-5: having cut Smoker and Tashigi in two, he switches the Marines’ bullets with the surrounding snow (“Those are your bullets,” p. 4), Shambles-scrambles their body parts (p. 14), and finally calls “Scalpel!” to carve out Smoker’s still-beating heart into a cube (pp. 17-18). Inside the lab, the Master’s harpy lieutenant Monet (first appearance, “Bird-Woman Harpy”) runs the Den Den Mushi surveillance and, reading the “Straw Hat Crew: Back in Business” newspaper, identifies the abducted captives as the Straw Hat Pirates; she also reports that Brownbeard’s centaur patrol and “Vegapunk’s dragon” were wiped out (p. 13). Luffy arrives and recognizes Law — their first meeting since Marineford (pp. 19-20).
• Ch. 663 — (“CC”) the island is named on-page as “Punk Hazard (PH)” — “everything from this island should say PH on it… for Punk Hazard” (p. 18). On the burning slope the centaur “boss” Brownbeard recognizes the Warlord Trafalgar Law, who treats Luffy’s wounds then downs Smoker & Tashigi and withdraws. The bisected Wano samurai’s story is unwound: Law cut him into three living pieces, his legs stuck to “the back of a dragon’s head,” and he came hunting his missing son Momonosuke (p. 16-17). Finally Smoker’s G-5 find a CC-logo ship hidden by the lab and Tashigi deduces the hidden “master” is the fugitive ex-Vegapunk scientist Caesar Clown — “the authority on weapons of mass murder” (p. 19). • Ch. 664 — (“Master Caesar Clown”) the hidden master is shown and named for the first time: Caesar Clown, on an intro card as a former WG Science-Division scientist, ฿300,000,000, Gas-Gas Fruit (Logia) user (p. 18). The captured centaur “boss” Brownbeard narrates the island’s full history (pp. 11-16): Punk Hazard was Vegapunk’s WG laboratory for developing/testing “all manner of weapons and chemicals” on prisoner subjects; four years ago one of Caesar’s chemical-weapons tests exploded, destroyed two of the three labs, flooded the island with toxic gas, and wiped out all life — Vegapunk was scapegoated, Caesar escaped the prison transport, and ~2 years ago purified the gas and recruited the survivors who now revere him as a “god of salvation.” The island-guarding dragon is named on-page as “a creation of Vegapunk, an artificial life-form” that “can adapt to any environment” (p. 16). Caesar grants his men “permission to kill” the Straw Hats, G-5, and “Foxfire Kin’emon,” and assures his patron Joker any deaths will be filed as “accidents” (p. 8). • Ch. 670 — a black slime “falls from the sky” onto the frozen side — poison to the touch, explosive on contact with fire, self-reassembling — and the G-5 Marines accidentally detonate it, destroying the navy’s escape ship (pp. 8–13). Caesar is shown ferrying the creature across the lake in airborne pieces because it “doesn’t like water” (p. 16); Franky’s laser breaches the Vegapunk lab door (p. 7).

• Ch. 675 — (“I Call It Land of the Dead”) Caesar reveals he killed Punk Hazard four years ago with the gas-creature Smiley (“an incarnation of the toxic H₂S gas”); its scattered “Smiles” launch from the burning side and coalesce at the center of the icy side, where Caesar force-feeds Smiley a “special food” into the upgraded weapon he names “Land of the Dead,” loosed on the icy side as it melts the dragon-sled and devours one of Vegapunk’s small dragons.

• Ch. 678 — interior detail of the lab complex: Laboratory Building A and its lobby (the chapter-title setting), the “Structure R-66” sea-gate that exits to open water without touching the outside poison air (the group’s only escape route, p. 11), and the port tanker Franky plans to steal and blow. • Ch. 679 — (“The G-5 Spirit”) Caesar floods his own Third Lab Complex (Structures A/B/C/D/R) with the Land of the Dead gas by cannon-breaching Structure A’s wall and sealing the connecting gate — sacrificing his own remaining guards; the Straw Hats, G-5 marines and Brownbeard (carrying them on his back) barely escape through the closing gate, leaving many G-5 sailors trapped behind and lost.

Interior detail: Structure R, the R-66 / R-6 gates, 1st–2nd floors, where the broadcast/betrayal of Brownbeard and the Luffy–Caesar confrontation play out.
