Etymology

シーザー・クラウン (Shīzā Kuraun). A layered name built on a king motif plus a clown/joker reading:

• “Caesar” — the Roman imperial title, derived from the cognomen of Julius Caesar; encodes an emperor/king theme. (His being captured and held for ransom by Law and Luffy later in the arc mirrors the real Julius Caesar, who was famously captured and ransomed by pirates.) The name is also shared by real-world pirates Black Caesar and Henri Caesar — the standard pirate-history layer.
• “Clown” / “Crown” — the katakana クラウン (kuraun) romanizes as both “Clown” and “Crown.” Beneath the literal circus-clown/joker reading sits a royal-crown pun, reinforcing the regal/king theme that runs through the character.
• Clown ↔ Joker — the demonic-jester face pairs him by design with his off-page patron “Joker” (a clown serving a Joker); the secondary pop-culture link is Caesar Romero, the first actor to play the Joker (1960s Batman TV). (This Romero layer is the lower-confidence strand; the Caesar/Crown king theme and the pirate-Caesars are directly One Piece Wiki–sourced.)

• “Gastino” / “Gas-hiko” (Ch. 859) — the alias he uses while embedded in Bege’s Firetank crew as a fake “blood brother.” Gastino (ガスティーノ Gasutīno) = gas (his Gas-Gas power) + the Italianate masculine suffix “-tino” (cf. Valentino, Faustino), matching the crew’s Italian-American mafia naming scheme (Bege ← Al Capone). The Firetank crew mock him as “Gas-hiko” (ガス彦 — gas + 彦 hiko, a homely, old-fashioned Japanese male-name suffix ≈ “Gas-lad/boy”), deflating the fancy Italian alias into a plain Japanese name — which is exactly why he forbids it in front of Big Mom (p. 4). (Medium confidence: the gas-pun is self-evident and the “-tino” mob-theme fit is well-grounded, but the 彦 reading is inferred from the VIZ “Gas-hiko” romanization — no dedicated Wiki etymology entry.)

Punk Hazard (Ch. 694) — crushes the wrong heart; kills his own secretary

• Gloats that he holds Smoker’s heart — “Ahh, what a thoughtful present… Smoker’s heart, eh?” — and crushes it to kill Smoker: “Die, Smoker!!!” (pp. 12–14).
• Law’s trick: the heart was actually Monet’s, “considerately returned” to Caesar by Law; Caesar fatally strikes down his own loyal secretary (pp. 14–15).
• A subordinate reports that “Law and Smoker are in a huge battle outside” (p. 14).

Punk Hazard — recaptured (Ch. 693)

• Knocked unconscious into the sea by Luffy’s punch (prior chapter), Caesar is retrieved by Buffalo, who flies him off the island (“We’re taking Caesar with us!!!”, pp. 9-10). Doflamingo’s contingency hinges on him: only Caesar can survive the gas the second weapon would unleash (p. 16).

• Tries a final bribe on Luffy (“you wadda work for me?!”) and is finished by Gum-Gum Grizzly Magnum, smashed through a wall and launched clear off the island (pp. 3–6).

• Fires his steel-melting gas burner “Gastille” at Luffy (p. 4; named in Brownbeard’s caption) and laughs (Shurororo), boasting that his patron “Joker” / Doflamingo — “the man who controls the darkness of the New World,” dealing “guns, weapons, drugs,” “the root, the spark of evil,” “connections to every criminal mastermind” — will avenge him, and that the lab’s monster Vergo will finish Smoker and Law (pp. 3–5). • Confirmed as the architect of the four-years-ago weapons disaster that nearly killed the island’s guards — falsely blamed on Vegapunk — after which he “pretended to save them” to make them worshippers (p. 7).

• Flashback exposes his recruitment script: he told the children his “only son fell ill with your sickness and tragically passed away” and that he “swore to do everything in my power to never see another child suffer the way he did” (p. 5) — presenting himself as a grieving savior. Greets new arrivals as “the first generation of my patients,” weeps crocodile tears, and installs Monet as a friendly handler (pp. 5-6).
• Rewards each “treatment” with “candy from the master” — the addictive NHC10 (p. 6). The children’s verdict: “It was all lies!!”

Punk Hazard (Ch. 685) — the death-program reveal

• In Momonosuke’s flashback, Caesar runs the facility as “Master Caesar” and welcomes new children (“This is your playground now! Shu ho ho!”, p. 7), but privately treats the gigantified children as a disposable experiment: the drugs “can’t last forever,” “this batch of subjects won’t be around any longer,” a “necessary sacrifice,” with a “fresh refill” planned every five years (p. 12). Punk Hazard (Ch. 684) — the gas-chamber master plan; the four-years-ago lie exposed

• From his Secret Room (Structure R, 2F) unveils the master plan: seal the gates to Structures C and D, funnel every survivor (Straw Hats, G-5, the children, friend and foe) into Vegapunk’s former command room (Structure R, 1F), and flood it through its external vents with the gas weapon Land of the Dead — a giant locked gas chamber (pp. 11–14). Punk Hazard (Ch. 677) — foiled by the smoke screen

• Gloats over Law (“once the experiment is over… I’ll find a good use for your body!”, p. 9) but is foiled: the burning battleship’s smoke (“Thanks a lot, Trafalgar! Now the smoke is coming up here!!”) blinds his video snails, letting the captives escape unseen (p. 9). His “Land of the Dead” gas spreads across the whole island.

Punk Hazard (Ch. 676) — deploys “Land of the Dead”; petrifies the island; gloats over his hostage board
