The seed
Sequence: (1) Luffy witnesses Chopper risk his life defending Hiriluk’s pirate flag from Wapol (p. 7); (2) Luffy picks up the flag himself and articulates the doctor’s philosophy (pp. 8-10); (3) Luffy calls down to Chopper from the tower (“Hey, reindeer!!” , p. 11); (4) Luffy stretches in through the wall to save Chopper from Kuromarimo (pp. 16-17, WAAH!!! SHWOO → SHABAM!!! ) — “You have a friend… right here!!! I’m your friend!!!” ; (5) Luffy entrusts Chopper with the kill-shot on Wapol (p. 17): “Hey, reindeer. Can you finish him off?” .
The payoff
Ch. 152 pp. 17-18 — The flag-defense-witness recruitment-grammar extends through the recruitment-acceptance beat
Chopper’s recruitment-acceptance commitment (“Of course I want to be a pirate!!” , p. 18) is staged under Hiriluk’s pirate-flag silhouetted above the castle (pp. 8, 17-18). The flag that Chopper defended in Ch. 148 is now the silent witness to his acceptance into the crew. The Ch. 148 recruitment-witness beat → Ch. 152 recruitment-acceptance beat → Ch. 153 formal-join beat is a three-stage sequence — all staged under the same Hiriluk-flag iconography. The flag is the load-bearing visual through the entire recruitment grammar.
