Egghead

Etymology

• Egghead (エッグヘッド, Egguheddo; formerly stylized “Egg Head”). The colloquial/derogatory English “egghead” = a highly intellectual / studious person — apt for the World Government’s science capital and the home of super-genius Vegapunk. Literalized in the design: the island is egg-shaped (a sunny-side-up egg seen from above), and the Labophase sits inside a giant egg “head.”
• Labophase (named Ch. 1064 p. 14) — the upper research level inside the giant egg, atop a manufactured island-cloud. Japanese 研究層 (“research stratum / layer,” kenkyū-sō) furigana’d as ラボフェーズ (Rabofēzu): Labo (ラボ, the Japanese clipping of “laboratory”) + phase.
• Fabriophase (named Ch. 1064 p. 14) — the lower factory level, home to the island’s workers and researchers. Japanese 工場層 (“factory stratum / layer,” kōjō-sō) furigana’d as ファビリオフェーズ (Fabiriofēzu): Fabrio (from Latin fabrica, “workshop / factory,” root of fabricate / factory) + phase.
• Cross-pun (the two tiers). Each name reads “-phase” (フェーズ — a developmental stage of science) in katakana, yet is written with the kanji 層 (“layer / stratum”). The reading sells “phase”; the kanji says “layer” — capturing that Egghead is literally a two-layer / tiered island (research up top, factory below).
• VEGAFORCE-01 / Vega Force (the flying lab-tour transport; the giant island-defense robot debuted Ch. 1061). The brand carries Vegapunk’s prefix Vega (after the star Vega, brightest in Lyra) + Force. (medium confidence — brand-extension of the Vegapunk name; no explicit SBS.)
• Real-world design. Egghead’s look is Raygun Gothic retrofuturism evoking Japan’s Shōwa-era optimism — homaging Astro Boy (the jetpacks, DOM boots, Atlas), Cyborg 009 (Vegapunk + his specialized android Satellites), and tokusatsu / kaiju (the giant-beast and giant-robot holograms).

Key chapters

• Ch. 1061 — first appearance: the Straw Hats reach Egghead; the mecha-shark, the Vega Force 01 robot, and the first on-page presence of “Dr. Vegapunk.”
• Ch. 1062 — “the land of science.” Egghead is shown to be a winter island kept tropical by an island A/C built by Atlas; flying buildings, a giant robot, holographic projections, and an automated cooking machine that converts holographic food into real matter via “high-pressure gloves.” Its surrounding waters are guarded by autonomous Sea Beast Weapons (p. 4). The CP0 briefing reveals the six Vegapunk Satellites here. The World Government wants every Vegapunk eliminated but the lab preserved (p. 16-17).
• Ch. 1063 — the Straw-Hat advance party explore Egghead’s automated economy: “MEGA FOOD” dispensers, “FASHION” clothing booths (handing out “SSG”-branded jackets), “RECYCOLLIE” robot-dogs, and Kuma-model “POLICE” Pacifistas that dispense laser-cannon “punishment” for theft. The once-deserted island is now crowded with people in heavy clothing despite the tropical climate; the crew marvel “I’m in the future!!!” One POLICE Pacifista is the unit Bonney mistakes for her father (the Kuma-reveal beat). (The island name “Egghead” is not re-printed this chapter.)
• Ch. 1064 — the island’s two-tier structure is named (p. 14): the upper Labophase — the research level, sitting atop artificial clouds, where the research happens — and the lower Fabriophase — the factory level where the workers and researchers live. Its “ground” is effectively cloud: Egghead artificially recreates sky-island clouds by modifying the density of pyrobloin + moisture in the condensation nuclei through its air systems (p. 15). Sub-features named this chapter: the giant VEGAPUNK / LABO tower (lab entrance), the “JNK RECORDS” structure, the TRANCOS changing area, and DOM shoes that fit any foot. “Team Sunny” (Luffy, Sanji, Chopper, Bonney) tour the lab aboard the flying VEGAFORCE-01.
• Ch. 1065 — inside the lab. Three more satellites are shown in person — Edison (the Thinker), Pythagoras (the Wise), York (the Greed) — alongside Shaka and Lilith. The lab’s magnetic floor controls the Dom shoes that pin the crew (p. 17), and the first Seraphim unit, the Jinbe-model S-Shark, is field-tested in combat against the Straw Hats. Shaka reveals Egghead’s “super-future” tech is in fact the past — a kingdom “just as highly advanced as this… existed 900 years ago” — and a buried colossal ancient iron robot is unveiled in the scrap heap (pp. 18-19). • Ch. 1066 — the scrap-heap Fabriophase is revisited: Luffy, Bonney, and Chopper trigger an ancient robot (“Robonosuke”) that explodes and warps the group. They are caught by the present-day human Dr. Vegapunk (the real “Stella”), captioned “The smartest man in the world · SSG Leader,” who recognizes Luffy as Dragon’s son. Meanwhile a satellite recounts the Void Century truth and Ohara’s surviving library to Robin’s group, confirming Saul is alive and “in hiding” on Elbaf. See True History Ohara Was Killed For.
• Ch. 1067 — Punk Records is shown: the storage vault for Vegapunk’s brain, on the underside of the eggshell at the island’s tippy-top (p.3). The real Vegapunk reveals the buried iron giant (“the legendary iron giant”, attacker of Mariejois ~200 yrs ago) resting in his scrap heap (p.9). Autonomous mecha sea-beasts (“badly trained pets”) patrol the surrounding waters (p.12). CP-0 (led by Rob Lucci) requests to dock hunting Bonney and is refused entry by Shaka (p.12-14).
• Ch. 1069 — the island is the stage for the Gear-5 Luffy vs the awakened Rob Lucci duel. Two sub-structures are named on-page: the Frontier Dome (the labophase’s laser-grid barrier) and the Vacuum Rocket (an extraction transport the Vegapunk side steers the Straw Hats toward, inside the Frontier Dome, p.15). The on-island Pacifista Authority Hierarchy governs the Seraphim (Five Elders → Vegapunk → Sentomaru → Authority-Chip owners). Marine HQ treats the Straw Hats’ presence on a government island as a potential declaration of war.
• Ch. 1070 — the island’s layout is confirmed: the Fabriophase (the factory) and the Labophase (the lab), joined by the Vacuum Rocket / Rocket Hyper Capsule (~32-second transit, pp. 13-14). The Frontier Dome seals the island in lockdown as the Straw Hats flee with Vegapunk (“Danger! Beware of intruders!!”; “Nothing escapes this island… not even a single ant!!”, pp. 14-17).
• Ch. 1071 — the escape crisis: Vegapunk + the satellites plan to flee aboard the Straw Hats’ ship under Vegaforce-1 escort; the island’s Frontier Dome barrier is deactivated from the control room by an unseen party, letting CP0 inside; Shaka restores the Dome too late. • Ch. 1072 — the Labophase / Punk Records crisis: Bonney’s rampage and Vegapunk’s interrogation play out in the Labophase; the autonomous Seraphim breach it on their own initiative and destroy the lab — the Punk Records tower is blown apart (pp. 11–16).
• Ch. 1074 — the MK III crisis: at the Fabriophase the rebel Pacifista MK III turn on the occupying Navy; inside the Labophase / Punk Records the satellites, Stussy, Robin and an exhausted Luffy comb the lab for the missing Stella via the (knocked-out) camsnails; in the P.A.W. Room, Lab Bonney finds Kuma’s stored memories. The frontier dome stays sealed and the Navy occupies the island.
• Ch. 1075 — the Labophase “death game.” The lab interior is mapped on-page: lettered Buildings A/B/C with stacked floors (F1-F4), a command room (4F, Building A), and a weapons-development floor (“don’t cause any big vibrations”) (pp. 4-7). The island can be sealed inside a defensive barrier that traps everyone within — Lucci cites “being trapped inside the barrier” and the “downed radio” as part of the premeditated assault (p. 14). The Seraphim turn rogue and slaughter the satellites and the cuffed CP0 alike.
• Ch. 1076 — in Vegapunk’s lab: CP0 (Lucci, Kaku) battle Luffy & Zoro; survivors of CP5/CP7/CP8 are found imprisoned and starving (driven back by sea beast weapons two months prior); Vegapunk’s leaked poneglyph research has reached the World Government, bringing a fleet of over 100 ships (“Base G-9 has left port”) converging on the island. • Ch. 1077 — the lab-building “death game” continues: named structures are the Fabriophase (factory district; “FABRIO” signage, p. 2), the multi-storey lab Buildings A / C (Command Floor 4F; pp. 4, 8, 12), and the B1 old Devil-Fruit Research Lab basement, which holds caged captives (p. 16). Sentomaru orders an island-wide evacuation as the WG deploys Pacifista everywhere to erase Vegapunk — framed as a second Ohara (pp. 2-3). The Straw Hats fight three Seraphim (bear/snake/shark models) across the buildings; the satellite Shaka locates the missing Stella in the B1 lab and is shot (pp. 16-17). • Ch. 1079 — York is revealed as the massacre’s mastermind. In a “hours earlier” flashback, York ordered the Seraphim to kill everyone except herself, the Stella, and the people underground once the Frontier Dome sealed, and staged her own petrification via S-Snake (pp. 2–3). • Ch. 1089 — the siege. Egghead is surrounded by a nation-sized fleet (100 ships, 20 battleships, 9 vice admirals, 30,000 sailors) that “far outclassed even a Buster Call,” led by Kizaru under Saturn’s command (pp. 7–8). The Frontier Dome has sealed the island for a full day at 100% barrier status — nothing in or out (p. 12). Revealed to house the Mother Flame’s power plant (p. 15); the Labophase hosts Vegapunk + the satellites + CP0 + the four Seraphim + the Straw Hats, while the Fabriophase holds the locked-up Pacifista and rank-and-file CP agents (p. 11).
• Ch. 1092 — the Labophase battle: Gear-5 Luffy vs Kizaru (kicked off the island and back through the barrier); the satellites’ completed Vegaforce-01 escape robot is destroyed by Kizaru; the control-tower team crack York’s lockout code so the Frontier Dome barrier can be lowered for the escape (Mariejois intercuts the “previous day” Kuma rampage).
• Ch. 1093 — action spans the island’s sectors: the Labophase (Luffy vs Kizaru, Zoro vs Lucci), the Fabriophase (Bonney vs Marines), Building A (2nd-floor rendezvous), and the Coast of Egghead where the massing Marine fleet becomes the Pacifistas’ target after Vegapunk seizes them (“Wipe out all Navy sailors on this island!!!”). The Frontier Dome is partially deactivated so the Pacifistas can deploy.

• Ch. 1099 — origin reveal (Kuma flashback). The island/lab is captioned “NAVAL SCIENCE DIVISION, LABORATORY 8 (LATER KNOWN AS EGGHEAD)” (p. 13) — Egghead began as a Navy science lab where the original Vegapunk (“Stella”) worked, and where the Pacifista program was born from Kuma’s body.

• Ch. 1100 — origin flashback (cont.). “Laboratory 8” is where Kuma’s cyborg augmentation and child Bonney’s Sapphire Scales treatment are carried out; Vegapunk performs the augmentation himself and, overworked, wishes for “five more of me” — the on-page seed of the six satellites (pp. 2, 6, 9–11).

• Ch. 1104 — present-day battleground. The Labophase is named as the facility Atlas carries the immobile Kuma toward (p. 14); Saturn declares a full Buster Call on the island, calling Egghead “full of inconvenient people who must be eradicated” (p. 15); the Punk Records dome is marked “100” (p. 15).

• Ch. 1105 — the Buster Call bombardment lands. Under the Buster Call, the future city (Punk Records / “GA PUNK” structures) begins to collapse while the Labophase above the clouds is still shielded behind its barrier; the Fabriophase → Labophase Vacuum Rocket / Hyper Capsule transit is shown (~32 s) (pp. 6, 9-11).
• Ch. 1108 — the Buster Call turns on itself. Pirate-controlled Pacifistas with bubble shields sink the Navy’s own ships off the shore; the Vice Admirals can’t cancel a Buster Call and are ordered to hunt Bonney across the Fabriophase toward the northeast coast, where two warriors of Elbaf have landed a ship to aid the Straw Hats. Researchers point the giants to the lab “on top of the clouds” (Labophase) as the flames spread (pp. 5–10).
• Ch. 1110 — the Five Elders’ beast-form rampage. The five Elders’ monstrous beast-forms tear across the island in black flame — sinking ships, slaughtering the Pacifista (Bakotsu downs PX-III 016), and converging on the Straw Hats at the northeast shore. Luffy (Nika/Gear-5) is briefly trapped in a beast’s maw; the Giants arrive at the cliffhanger to cleave the beast and cover the escape.

• Ch. 1113 — The broadcast airs from here while the Gorosei try (and fail) to stop it; Bonney/Franky/Sanji/Robin defended; the Mother-Flame power plant deemed too valuable to destroy (pp. 7-19).
• Ch. 1123 — The crew departs Egghead. The Sunny + the giants’ Viking fleet break the slumbering Marine blockade and set sail for Elbaf (p.2–4). The Egghead-set Void-Fortnight flashback names new facilities.

Egghead — survives as a floating island (Ch. 1125)

• Captioned “Future Island Egghead,” the island floats away on Vegapunk-made island clouds (the floating type) with the surviving satellites aboard; they retain the “genius brain,” call Weatheria for help, and note “as far as the world knows, Vegapunk is dead” (pp.14–15).

The broadcast / collapse (Ch. 1116)

• The Labophase basement lab and the Cipher Pol agents have “fallen down”; Edison can no longer send island clouds up to the escaping Straw Hats. The broadcasting transponder snail is housed in the Iron Giant (Emet) in the Fabriophase, under its protection, with the Five Elders unable to disable it. (pp. 5, 12)
