Summary

The Foxy Pirates’ challenge has been issued and — over the protests of his crew — Luffy has accepted it, locking the Straw Hats into a Davy Back Fight. Robin, Sanji, Hamburg and others lay out what that means: a “pirate game” born long ago on a pirate paradise, in which crews wager their own members and flags, and the winner of each game gets to pick one crew member off the loser’s ship — that person must instantly swear allegiance to the enemy captain. Foxy’s crew jeers that they themselves are made of stolen sailors (the former captain/navigator/carpenter/doctor of the absorbed “Fang Frog Pirates”), proof the game is a “complete takeover.” Nami panics at the stakes, but Zoro and Sanji refuse to flee — fleeing a challenge is “the greatest shame a pirate can know.” Foxy fires the starting signal alongside Luffy; both captains have agreed, so it’s official. The opening ceremony begins: vendors, betting odds, a festival atmosphere on the Foxy side. The MC Itomimizu has both sides swear the Three Articles of Defeat, then announces this will be a three-game contest. Robin explains “Davy Jones” to a frightened Chopper. The crew assigns its players: Round 1 Donut Race (Nami, Usopp, Robin), Round 2 Groggy Ring (Zoro, Sanji, Chopper), Round 3 Combat (Luffy alone). The chapter ends at the start of Round 1: Nami/Usopp/Robin in their cobbled-together boat the “Barrel Tiger” face off against Foxy’s idol Porche, who rides the marlin Capote and the shark Monda atop the “Cutie Wagon” — and vows to sink them.

• The Davy Back Fight is formally named and defined (pp. 4–6): a “pirate game” in which “pirates stole pirates from each other”; “Davy Back Fight is a contest for crew members” — the winner of each game “gets to choose one crew member from the opponent’s ship,” who “will instantly become the loyal subordinate of the enemy captain… and swear upon Davy Jones, pirate of the deep sea” (pp. 5–6).
• The losing captain “may strip [the flag] of its very spirit — the Jolly Roger” if the opponent has nobody worth taking (p. 6).
