Summary
Cover-art (p. 1): Django’s Dance Heaven, Vol. 21: “What Luck — Django on the Run” — Django flees down a town street, panicked civilians scattering. The Marine manhunt from Vol. 19-20 has spotted him.
In-story (pp. 2-3), Sanji, Luffy, Vivi, and Nami leave Dr. Kureha and Chopper in Drum Castle to head down the mountain. The crew assumes Chopper is joining them as ship’s doctor — “Yes, especially since we’ll have a doctor” — and frames the imminent Alabasta-departure as a Chopper-included roster.
Inside the castle (p. 3), Kureha notices her waiting-area has emptied — Wapol’s faction has fled. She is told they “disobeyed your orders.”

Outside the castle (pp. 7-9), Chopper sprints across the courtyard while the Straw Hats below haul out cannons under Vivi’s distracted exclamation “What’s all the racket?” Chopper (chasing Chopper) screams “I won’t let you get away!!!” and the Straw Hats look up to see the famous black silhouette of the witch’s sleigh racing toward them.
Page 10 — full-page splash. A tiny silhouette of Kureha’s reindeer-drawn sleigh streaks across an enormous full moon over snow-laden pines. Pure Christmas iconography.
The sleigh lands in the village (pp. 11-12). Sanji wakes up to find himself in a sleigh; Luffy explains Chopper “was just a stray that got adopted.” Kureha (looming over Chopper) asks: “…is this what you want?”
Page 13 — the emotional pivot. Kureha says she “doesn’t like… tearful farewells.” Chopper, sobbing, throws Hiriluk’s signature flag-doctrine back at her — “Nothing is impossible for those who fly the flag of the crossbones!! …Say it again, Doctor!!!” — and Kureha replies: “I did it, Chopper!! My work is a success!!!” echoing Hiriluk’s Ch. 144 cure-reaction line. “A send-off for a ship has to be done in grand style!!” — and the chapter pivots from grief to cannon-line.
Hiriluk’s pirate-flag flutters again over Drum Castle (p. 13 middle panels), re-raised for the send-off.
Pages 14-15 — the cannon-barrage. Drum Castle’s parapets line up a row of cannons. Kureha: “Everything set, kiddies!? Fire!!!” — BRUPEROOO!! BA-BA-BOOM!! — cannonballs arc out over the kingdom. The villagers panic: “It’s a cannon barrage! Take cover!!” / “We’re being attacked in the night!!!” — the gift reads as an assault to the people who don’t know.
Pages 16-17 — the payoff begins. The crew and villagers look up. Wapol, slumped in the wreck of his own snowbird-cannon (Ch. 150), watches grudgingly: “KAK KAK KAK KAK KAK… what wonders fools create… it’s like a dream…” Chopper sobs uncontrollably — “Doctor… Dr. Kureha…” — at what is about to happen. Hiriluk’s flag flies overhead.
Kureha (pp. 17-18, smiling at the cannon-line): “Listen!! This red powder is no ordinary dust!!! When it comes in contact with white snow in the atmosphere… brilliant pink snowflakes will fall!!! This is what I’ve worked 30 years for!!!” The red-powder cloud hangs in the air over the kingdom. The literal pink-snowfall begins to land on the final page; the full-page bloom over Drum Castle is forward-canon (Ch. 154).
Back-matter (p. 18): Question Corner — Oda confirms Dalton “loves chestnut rice,” notes Kureha is “nearly 140 years old” (up from Ch. 141’s caption 133), and mentions a lakeside ice-skating town north of Drum.

Open questions raised
- What is the Fairy Dust / red powder actually made of? Kureha’s chemistry-narration says the powder reacts with white snow in the atmosphere to produce pink snowflakes — but the exact composition is not disclosed. “Lizard eyeballs” (p. 17) is a sardonic Kureha-aside about a failed Hiriluk experiment, not the actual formula. The 30 years of research yielded an empirical it works without a public formula.
- How did Kureha know exactly when to release Chopper? She physically refuses to release him (pp. 4-6), throws a knife at him, then within hours is firing the cherry-blossom-cannon as a grand-style send-off. The pivot happens off-page. The chapter implies the no-tearful-farewells line (p. 13) is the master’s actual permission — the cannon-salute is the bow-substitute.
- What happens to Drum Kingdom after the cherry-blossom-snowfall? The kingdom is in political collapse (Wapol exiled-twice; Dalton freshly survived; civilian guard re-forming). The forward-canon rename to Sakura Kingdom is implied by the Hiriluk’s Cherry Blossoms title-key, but not yet on-page.
- Will Chopper bow to Hiriluk’s grave? The classic Disciple Bows To Master Farewell Composition grammar predicts a Chopper-bows-to-Hiriluk-grave composition. Kureha’s no-tearful-farewells and the cannon-salute pivot the chapter away from that grammar — but the bow may still land in the next chapter.
- How old is Kureha really? Ch. 141 caption-box: DR. KUREHA (133 YEARS OLD). Ch. 153 SBS: nearly 140. Either (a) the caption was set seven years earlier than the on-page scene, (b) Oda rounded for the SBS, or (c) Kureha’s age is an in-fiction joke/lie. The discrepancy is worth tracking.
