Florian Triangle
- Name
- フロリアン・トライアングル (Furorian Toraianguru)
- Sea
- Florian Triangle (cursed sea between Water Seven and Fish-Man Island)
- Region
- Grand Line
- First seen
- Ch. 442
- Name meaning
- Based on the real Bermuda Triangle (Oda, SBS 61) — a fog-bound stretch of sea where ships mysteriously vanish. 'Florian' derives from 'Florida' (the katakana フロリアン / フロリダ share the first three syllables フロリ); Florida is one of the three points of the real Bermuda Triangle. The Japanese title is 魔の三角地帯 (Ma no Sankaku Chitai) = 'Devil's Triangle Zone' — hence its aliases Demon's Triangle / Demonic Sea.
Profile
A fog-shrouded, lethal stretch of Grand Line sea that must be crossed to reach the underwater Fish-Man Island. Named on-page in Ch. 435 (p. 12) by a fish-faced Water Seven informant: ~100+ ships vanish here every year (“Fourteen ships disappeared this month”), crews disappear, and eyewitnesses report ghost ships crewed by the dead (p. 13). The fog is thick and the sea is dark; the ones who experience it never escape.
The beat pre-loads the next arc and a living-skeleton crewmate-to-be — Luffy gleefully blurts “I get to meet a living skeleton?!” beside a panel of a skeleton-crewed ghost ship. See Florian Triangle Ghost Ships And Living Skeleton Seed.
First shown on-page in Ch. 442 (pp. 10-13): bound for Fish-Man Island, the crew rides out a storm and drifts into the Triangle — perpetual thick fog and darkness even by day, where ~100 ships vanish every year without a trace and a ghost ship crewed by “the dead” roams singing “Binks’s Brew.” Also called the “Demon’s Triangle” / “Demonic Sea.” Aboard the ghost ship they find the living skeleton Brook (pp. 14-16).
Etymology
(To research — “Florian” evokes flora and the Flying-Dutchman ghost-ship register)
Key chapters
- Ch. 435 — first mentioned / named: the cursed sea on the route to Fish-Man Island; ghost-ship lore established.
- Ch. 442 — first appearance: the crew enters the fog; the ghost ship and the living skeleton Brook are shown.
- Ch. 443 — the wandering ghost-island Thriller Bark (“the ghost island that wanders the seas”) is found within the Triangle; the Thousand Sunny is lured in by a drifting barrel and sealed behind a giant gate. Brook reveals he has drifted in “this accursed sea” for decades.
- Ch. 474 — Thriller Bark exits the Triangle’s fog: the Oars-steered island-ship breaks out of the perpetual fog (“Did we leave the Florian Triangle?!” / “Thriller Bark has broken out of the fog!!”, pp. 8-9) — the first on-page instance of a ship leaving the Triangle’s fog from within, exposing the shadowless crew to the coming dawn.
- Ch. 487 — the Rumbar Pirates’ doom begins here, in flashback: the cursed sea where clear skies snap to sudden tornadoes (p. 13); the start of the chain that leaves Brook adrift as a ghost-ship skeleton. See Florian Triangle Ghost Ships And Living Skeleton Seed.
