Summary
The Going Merry sails out across the open sea (page 2, top wide horizon panel) — the Syrup Village arc resolves with the crew at sea aboard their new ship. Below deck on the new vessel, Luffy unveils his hand-painted Jolly Roger: “BWAH HA HA HA HA HA!! / IT’S FINISHED!! / LUFFY’S PIRATE FLAG!!!” The flag is a mutant skull with one massive eyepatch and an X-shape (page 2). The crew rejects it: Zoro “A pirate flag ought to inspire terror. And this IS pretty scary.”; Nami “Hmm… or is it avant-garde?”; Usopp “This guy’s a little low on design sense.” / “That’s not our emblem!” (page 3). Johnny — for that is his name — explains: his partner Yosaku is dying off-screen on a separate skiff (“Where’s Yosaku?” — Zoro). “That’s just it!!” (Johnny). “He was fit as a fiddle until a few days ago… then he went pale and started passing out!! I don’t know what’s wrong!” (page 13 top).
