“The Salvage King”, “Boss” · alive · Masira Pirates

Profile

  • The “Salvage King” — a boisterous, monkey-faced pirate captain who claims every ship that sinks in his waters. Captain of the Masira Pirates; bounty 23,000,000 berries (caption, p. 15).

Etymology

Masira (JP マシラ Mashira) is an archaic/poetic Japanese word for “monkey,” written with the kanji 猿 (saru). The name directly tags his monkey-faced design and his place in the Saruyama Alliance (猿山連合軍, “Monkey Mountain Allied Force”). His brother Shoujou is named for the higher ape (猩猩 / orangutan); the two are the “Big Ape Brothers.” His attack names keep the theme: Saru Naguri (猿殴り, “Monkey Punch”) and Saru Ranji (猿ランジ, “Monkey Lunge”). Skypiea — hears the bell from Jaya (Ch. 299)

  • Co-reinforced the Going Merry into its “flying version” (pages 3–4).
  • Captains one of the two Saruyama Alliance escort ships (“Monkey Mountain Allied Force”), leading the Straw Hats out and helping tow the Merry into the Knock-Up Stream whirlpool (pages 7, 11, 16–17).

Jaya (Ch. 231)

Jaya (Ch. 230)

  • Working through the night to reinforce the Going Merry for the Knock-Up Stream — the source of the “DA DOOM!! BLAST!!” that interrupts Cricket (pp. 6, 8).
  • With Shoujou, stands as Mont Blanc Cricket’s bodyguard when Bellamy’s crew shows up at night demanding gold; “I was moved to tears” by the Mont Blanc story, “I remember a pirate named Cricket” (page 19).

Jaya (Ch. 229)

  • Named (with Shoujou) by Mont Blanc Cricket as the diver who will reinforce the Going Merry to survive the Knock-Up Stream (page 10).
  • “Masira’s territory” is named as the place where the daytime-night Emperor Cloud is spotted (page 14).
  • Joins the feast on Cricket’s island, drinking grog and getting a tabasco-bomb prank from Usopp (pages 16–17).

Jaya (Ch. 227)

  • Appears in Mont Blanc Cricket’s circle (p. 19, named shirt) gravely confirming the danger of the bends — first on-page link between Masira and Mont Blanc Cricket / the Monkey Mountain Allied Force (Saruyama Alliance).

Jaya (Ch. 219)

Jaya (Ch. 220)

  • Full salvage operation on-page: leads a hyperactive crew of helmeted divers raising sunken wrecks from the seafloor (pp. 2-3). His earpiece reads “MASIRA.”
  • Signature salvage method: clamps a sunken hull with the “Barco Grabber” (a giant cabled tong/clamp) after rigging a “Cradle Set,” then inflates the ship’s hull with his own breath to refloat it — “No way, he’s going to raise the wreck… with his breath?!” (pp. 9-13).
  • Combat technique: “Monkey Punch” — dives down and drives off a giant eel-like sea creature attacking the Straw Hats’ dive team (pp. 15-16).
  • Boards the raised ship and confronts Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji as territory-invaders, then bonds with them over being flattered to be called a monkey; surprised they’re “from the East Blue” (pp. 17-19).
  • (Affiliation note: the broader “Saruyama Alliance” is NOT named on-page in this chapter — leave that unconfirmed until a later chapter cites it.)

Jaya (Ch. 221)

  • Recap-framed “Monsters” chapter. Rears up enraged that the Straw Hats encroached on his treasure (“NOBODY STEALS MY TREASURE!! / You’ve encroached on Masira’s territory!!”, p. 12) — furiously claims the wreck-salvage waters as his exclusive territory.
  • His crew the Masira Pirates panic to save him when he is dragged under the water (“The boss is still alive!! …what the Masira Pirates are made of!!”, p. 7); chant “OOK KEE KEE.”
  • Spat from / near the giant turtle alongside the Straw Hats (pp. 10-13). Sanji narrates that the “monkey” was friendly with Luffy at first, then “turned into a gorilla!” and went berserk (p. 11).
