Chapter 134: Dr. Kureha

Summary

The chapter opens (after the cover) mid-conversation on snowbound Drum Island: the Straw Hats — carrying a feverish, gravely ill Nami to find a doctor — are being given the island’s recent history by Dalton, a heavily-built snow-country man. Vivi recognizes the name Wapol: as a child she met him at a meeting of kings her father took her to (p. 2). Dalton reveals Wapol’s pirate identity is a cover — Wapol is the deposed king of Drum who, when invaders showed the pirates’ strength, abandoned his nation and fled like rats from a sinking ship, escaping to the sea (pp. 3-4). Vivi is horrified: ‘How could a king do such a thing!!?’ / ‘It’s despicable for a king to abandon his people!!’ (pp. 5-6). The surviving citizens are now rebuilding a king-less nation; they fear the restoration of the monarchy — Wapol’s return — more than anything (pp. 5-6).

Luffy and Sanji push on through the deepening blizzard carrying Nami toward a doctor (pp. 6-9). They argue and trade absurd “facts” about snow countries (snow-country people don’t sleep; snow-country women have silky smooth skin) while being chased and snapped at by snarling white creatures. Sanji insists the huge white shapes in the storm are polar bears (p. 9); a passing snow-country man corrects them — these are Lapins: carnivorous rabbits as big as bears that attack in packs (pp. 10-11). The man tells them the witch is over in the next town right now and that they’re looking for the doctor — but they just took the patient (pp. 11-12).

Off the coast, Wapol’s pirate ship is sighted returning. His crewman Chess confirms through binoculars: ‘It’s our homeland!!! It’s Drum Island!!!!’ (p. 11). Wapol — ‘How many long, hard months has it been? We’ve finally come home!’ — lands his ship (DOOM!!). The deposed tyrant has come back to the kingdom that fears his return above all else.

In the neighboring town of Cocoaweed (p. 12), a shopkeeper struggles with a constantly-crying child, Tama. An old man warns: ‘A child that won’t stop crying has something wrong with its body.’ The townsfolk send for the doctor — ‘Dalton! Dalton!’ — and word comes that ‘the witch’ is near. Then Dr. Kureha crashes through the tavern wall (‘I’m coming in!!’, p. 13). Editorial captions identify her: Dr. Kureha — Master Physician (139 years old) and her companion Tony Tony Chopper — Dr. Kureha’s beloved reindeer — a small reindeer with a blue nose and a pink, X-cross-marked top hat (p. 14).

Kureha — vain about her age (‘I’m only 139 years old!!!’, p. 15) — diagnoses the not-sick child Tama: a festering inflammation and bacteria in your bones in his arm and legs (p. 16). She performs a brusque incision and injection without a painkiller, telling a patient to ‘stand still’ and that her medicine ‘is very effective’ (pp. 16-17). For payment she demands rum, food, garbage bags, toilet paper, and half the shop’s assets (pp. 16-17). The townsfolk grumble that she ‘only pretended to cure him’ and is ‘cheating’ the shopkeeper, while Kureha barks for Chopper to load her sleigh. The chapter closes (p. 18) on a comedic beat — townsfolk recoiling from Chopper: ‘Huh!? A baby monster!!’ — then a full-page reader-art Usopp’s Pirate Gallery feature.

Open questions raised

• Will the Straw Hats reach Dr. Kureha in time to save Nami? Nami is gravely ill; the crew is racing through a blizzard and a Lapin-infested mountain to find a doctor who has just taken the patient and moved on. Forward-canon: yes — Kureha treats Nami at her mountain castle later in the arc.
• What did Wapol do to Drum’s doctors, and why is the island doctorless? The chapter establishes Drum as a country in need of doctors (the Straw Hats came here specifically to find one) and Kureha as a near-unique Master Physician. The reason the island lost its doctors is not given on-page here. Forward-canon: Wapol purged the island’s physicians, conscripting them and leaving only the Isshi-20 / Kureha.
• Who is Tony Tony Chopper — and why do the townsfolk call him a baby monster? Chopper is introduced silently as Kureha’s beloved reindeer, but the monster reaction (and the human-style top hat) signals he is more than an ordinary animal. Forward-canon: Chopper is a Devil Fruit user (Hito Hito no Mi) and will join the crew as its doctor.
