- **Luffy walks unannounced into Arlong Park, demands Arlong by name** (page 2). First Luffy-on-Arlong-Park-soil chapter — he simply walks up the dock to the park's interior and asks, *'Which one of you is Arlong?'* Arlong responds *'That would be me.'* with full shark-tooth close-up grin (page 2 bottom tier). The chapter is the **arc-villain face-to-face encounter** — Luffy and Arlong on-page in the same panel for the first time in the series. Configuration: Luffy walks in *alone* (Sanji, Zoro, Usopp arriving moments later — they are not yet on-panel).
- **Luffy publicly self-identifies as *a pirate* in answer to Arlong's *'Is that so? And what's a Luffy?'*** (page 2, panel 3-5). *'A pirate.'* / *'I'm Luffy.'* The chapter installs Luffy's **public self-identification as a pirate at the threshold of an enemy crew's headquarters** — paired-parallel with the Ch. 80 Nami *'I'm a pirate'* self-identification (Ch. 80 page 8). Two adjacent chapters install both Luffy and Nami self-identifying as pirates to enemy authorities. Both use the *pirate* label as **declaration of moral position**, not as identity-confession — Luffy declares himself a pirate the way Nami declared herself a pirate, both as **arc-villain-confrontation grammar**.
- **Luffy headbutts an Arlong-Pirates fishman who tries to stop him** (page 3, *KRA-KAH*). When the fishman lieutenants say *'You'd better stop... Where do you think you're going?'* and *'First you gotta tell us your story... HEH HEH HEH. STOP RIGHT THERE.'*, Luffy responds *'Outta my way.'* and immediately delivers a single-strike headbutt that staggers the fishman (page 3, middle tier — *!!?* reaction-faces). The chapter's first combat-feat. **Single-strike-headbutt-on-a-fishman** is the chapter's tier-marker — Luffy is fighting at a tier that crosses the Ch. 70 *fishmen-are-ten-times-stronger-than-humans* threshold from the human side.
- **Luffy explosively kicks (or punches) a second fishman across the courtyard** (page 4, *KA-POW* / *KRAS*). The struck fishman is sent flying with full impact-radiating-stars composition (page 4 top tier) — the Arlong-Pirates mooks watching shout *'GRAAAH!!! LORD ARLONG!!?'* (page 5 top tier). The chapter's combat-grammar: Luffy is **single-shotting Arlong-Pirates mooks** at the rate of one fishman per page. Bottom tier of page 4 — Luffy landing in mid-action, snort-grin (*SNORT!!*). The composition is **'human boy demolishing fishmen-tier mooks one per panel'** — a tier-statement on its own.
- **Sanji arrives at Arlong Park, asks Luffy *'Do you realize what you just...?'*, then catches sight of Nami and pivots to *'You made our navigator... CRY!!!!'*** (page 5, top tier through final tier). Sanji is in mid-question (calm-aggrieved register) when his head turns and he sees Nami crying. The chapter's emotional pivot — Sanji's lovesick-rage from Ch. 80 fires here, but **directed at Arlong with a *navigator* framing**, not a *darling* framing. The *navigator* word matters: Sanji frames the offense not as *romantic-slight* but as **crew-role-violation**. *'You made our navigator CRY!!!!'* is the chapter's most emotionally charged line — the *cry* word is in 60-point face-shouting register (full-mouth *DOOM* SFX, full-page impact-typography). The chapter installs **Sanji-as-Nami-defender at the crew-role level**, not just the romantic level. This is the Ch. 80 Nojiko *'most painful word is friend'* register reflected on-page — Sanji is treating Nami as crew, not as *darling*. **Forward-payoff**: Sanji's Ch. 80 *'I, Sanji, shall beat him to death!!! That villain made my darling Nami suffer!'* lovesick-bonk register is here **upgraded to a battle-stance** with the *navigator* (crew-role) framing.
- **Luffy: *'You must be crazy!!!'* (full-body Luffy splash response to Sanji's rage) — Sanji to the Arlong-Pirates: *'Stay out of this, you crapfish!!!'*** (page 6, top and middle tiers — the chapter's *first-on-page Sanji-uses-the-Baratie-saw-nose-register on Arlong's crew*). Sanji deploys his **fish-themed insult grammar** at the Arlong-Pirates — *crapfish* (a continuation of the Ch. 73 *saw-nose* / Ch. 80 *that villain* epithet register). The chapter installs Sanji's **fish-insult-grammar** as his anti-Arlong-crew register.
- **Luffy and Sanji argue mid-combat in the Arlong-Pirates-as-audience configuration: *'Yeah, but I don't lose!!'* / *'You always have to dive right in, don't you?'* / *'I'm not worried about that, dummy!!'*** (page 6, bottom three panels). Luffy and Sanji have a **mid-combat domestic argument** in front of the Arlong-Pirates. The chapter installs the **Luffy-Sanji bickering-while-fighting** register as a Straw-Hat-combat-tactic — the enemy crew is the *background* of the conversation, not the threat-axis. Sanji is *worried* Luffy will lose; Luffy is *not worried*. The chapter's foundational *Straw-Hats-treat-fishmen-as-background-chatter* tier-grammar lands here.
- **Usopp arrives at Arlong Park alongside Sanji and Zoro** (page 7, top tier). *'How generous of you, Usopp...'* / *'I-It's okay with me if you don't share, Luffy.'* / *'Just save a little for the rest of us.'* — Usopp, lurking behind a column (*goggles + headband*), nervously offers to *not share* in the fight. The chapter's comic-relief beat: Usopp is **on-page at Arlong Park** for the first time since the Ch. 75 fake-killing — he is *alive*, *on-side*, and *cowardly-but-present*. Forward-link: the chapter installs the **Usopp-shows-up-anyway** loyalty-pattern.
- **Arlong-Pirates recognize Usopp and Zoro by sight** (page 7, middle-bottom tiers). The Arlong-Pirates mooks: *'Pirates, eh? So that's the connection.'* / *'Long Nose is alive!! I thought Nami killed him!!'* / *'That's the guy that tricked me!! He took me for a ride!! I mean, I took 'im for a ride!!'* / *'Roronoa Zolo!!'* — first on-page recognition of the Straw Hat crew **as a coherent crew** by the Arlong-Pirates. The mooks identify each Straw Hat by *their prior-encounter epithet* (Long Nose for Usopp, *the guy that tricked me* for Hatchan's Ch. 73 ferry-encounter with Sanji, *Roronoa Zolo* for Zoro). The chapter installs **Arlong-Pirates-as-collective-witnesses-to-the-Straw-Hats**.
- **Sister Nami / Brother register sustained: Yosaku/Johnny narrate the combat-feat from the Cocoyasi outskirts** (page 8, top tier). *'You see him send that monster Arlong flying!!'* / *'YACK YACK'* / *'He can't be a normal human!!'* / *'Hey!! Just who are those guys!?'* — the bounty-hunter duo (or villagers — speakers slightly ambiguous; appears to be Yosaku/Johnny with villagers, with goggled Usopp visible to the right) **narrate-witness** the chapter's combat. The chapter installs the **off-stage-witness-narrator** register for the chapter's combat — the Cocoyasi villagers are the **audience-side** of the Straw-Hat-arrival event. Forward-payoff: the Cocoyasi-villagers-watch-the-Straw-Hats-from-the-sidelines composition recurs through the rest of the arc.
- **Sanji and Zoro draw their bodies between Yosaku/Johnny (or villagers) and the combat** (page 8, middle-bottom tiers). Zoro: *'If you insist on butting into this fight, you'll have to go through us!!'* / *'You'll only be getting in our comrades' way here.'* / *'You can't defeat the fish-men yourselves.'* Sanji: *'That's a good enough reason for us to risk our lives.'* / *'They made sister Nami cry.'* / *'You have no reason to fight!!'* / *'Why are you doing this?'* The chapter installs the **Zoro-and-Sanji jointly-defending-non-combatants** register — the crew's two-front-fighters physically interpose themselves between the bounty-hunter-duo / villagers and the Arlong-Pirates. *'They made sister Nami cry'* is Sanji's **single-line full justification** for risking his life — the chapter's most-compressed *Straw-Hat-crew-loyalty axiom*.
- **Hatchan summons Momoo: *'Arise, giant warrior!!!'* / *'Do you boneheads think... you can push Lord Arlong around? I'll turn you into chum!!!'*** (page 9, middle tier — Hatchan blowing a trumpet, *TOOT TOOT-TOOO! TOOT! TOOOO!* SFX). The chapter installs Hatchan in **summoner-officer register** — he calls Momoo as the crew's response to the human intruders. The Ch. 73 Momoo-as-Heavy-Combat-Beast register is **re-deployed** in the same arc-location.
Arc: Arlong Park · Saga: East Blue · Volume: 9
Summary
The arc’s combat-pivot chapter. Luffy walks unannounced into Arlong Park, confronts Arlong face-to-face (‘Which one of you is Arlong?’ / ‘That would be me.’), demolishes two Arlong-Pirates mooks with single strikes, and is joined by Sanji, Zoro, and Usopp in rapid succession. Sanji catches sight of Nami (off-panel, off-stage) crying and erupts: ‘You made our navigator… CRY!!!!’ — the chapter’s emotional pivot, reframing the crew’s anti-Arlong combat-stance from romantic-grievance (Ch. 80 Sanji’s darling) to crew-role-defense. The Straw Hats argue mid-combat in front of the Arlong-Pirates audience (‘I don’t lose!!’ / ‘You always have to dive right in, don’t you?’); Hatchan summons Momoo as the crew’s response; Momoo arrives, recognizes Luffy, flinches in fear, and tries to flee (the Ch. 73 one-shot register pays off in traumatized-monster-recurring-cameo form); Hatchan releases Momoo (‘Go ahead, Momoo.’); Luffy grabs Momoo by the horns, spins him in a giant-Gum-Gum-throw, and launches him through a mountain. The Arlong-Pirates name Luffy as a Devil Fruit user in their own voice (Hatchan, page 15: ‘He has the power of the Devil Fruit!!!!’). Sanji’s chapter-defining mission-statement lands: ‘I came here to clobber… I didn’t come here to waste time on small fry!! …YOU!!!!’ — targeting Arlong specifically. Arlong matches the clobber word back at Sanji (‘I was just thinking about clobbering you, too’). Kuroobi and Choo step up to engage the Straw Hats; Yosaku tries to restrain Luffy and Sanji (‘You’ll get us all in trouble!!’); Zoro narrates ‘Now the real players appear.’ The chapter ends with the officer-trio vs Straw-Hat-trio composition locked in but not yet engaged — the next chapter’s pairings setup.
Page 18 — Volume 9 SBS Question Corner continued. Reader Timmy Ueda hijacks the column-opener; Oda answers a Find Panda Man puzzle from Volume 8 page 92 (the Baratie sinking-boat panel — Panda Man is ‘in the lower circle… at the upper right’ making a peace sign). The chapter canonizes Oda’s find-Panda-Man Where’s-Waldo running-gag mechanic.
New reveals
- Luffy’s first on-page face-to-face with Arlong (page 2). Luffy walks alone up the dock to Arlong’s bench-hall, asks ‘Which one of you is Arlong?’, declares ‘A pirate. I’m Luffy.’ The chapter is the arc’s villain-vs-protagonist face-off-encounter chapter — the configuration the arc has been building toward since Ch. 69.
- Luffy publicly self-identifies as a pirate at the threshold of the enemy’s headquarters (page 2). Parallel to the Ch. 80 Nami ‘I’m a pirate’ self-identification (Ch. 80 page 8). Two adjacent chapters install both Luffy and Nami self-identifying as pirates to enemy authorities.
- Luffy single-shots two Arlong-Pirates fishmen (pages 3-4). Headbutts one (KRA-KAH), kicks/punches one across the courtyard (KA-POW / KRAS). The chapter’s tier-marker — human boy demolishing fishmen-tier mooks one per panel.
- Sanji’s ‘You made our navigator… CRY!!!!’ line (page 5). The chapter’s emotional pivot. Reframes Sanji’s Ch. 80 darling-register lovesick-rage as crew-role-defense (navigator, not darling). Single-line emotional thesis of the chapter.
- Sanji’s clobber mission-statement (page 16). ‘I came here to clobber… I didn’t come here to waste time on small fry!! …YOU!!!!’ Sanji’s combat-objective is target-locked on Arlong specifically. Mooks are small fry; Arlong is the target.
- Arlong’s reciprocal ‘I was just thinking about clobbering you, too. Well that works out perfectly.’ (page 17). Mutual-mirrored clobber-statement installs the Sanji-Arlong duel-pairing via duel-lock grammar.
- Momoo recognizes Luffy on sight and flees in terror (page 11 top tier — FLINCH!!). The Ch. 73 one-shot register pays off in traumatized-monster-flees-on-sight form. Sanji’s deadpan ‘Oh, it’s just him.’ (page 11) canonizes the tier-perception-mismatch between villagers (monster-from-the-Grand-Line) and Straw Hats (just him).
- Momoo canonized as the Gosa-Village-destroyer in the Cocoyasi villagers’ voice (page 9). ‘The monster from the Grand Line!! The one that decimated Gosa!!’ The Ch. 70 Chabo huge monsters line is here pinned to Momoo specifically by name.
- Luffy spins Momoo by the horns and throws him through a mountain (pages 13-16). The chapter’s signature combat-feat — single-throw armada-destruction-tier feat at the human-vs-Grand-Line-creature scale.
- Luffy identified as a Devil-Fruit user by Hatchan / Arlong-Pirates (page 15 — ‘He has the power of the Devil Fruit!!!!’). The crew now knows Luffy’s power-class — informs forward officer-pairing combat-strategy.
- Officer-trio response coordinated (page 17). Kuroobi and Choo step up to engage; Hatchan as summoner already on-scene. Pre-loads the Ch. 84+ Straw-Hat-vs-officer pairings (the chapter is the roster-pairing setup chapter).
- Zoro narrates ‘Now the real players appear.’ (page 17, bottom tier) — chapter’s scene-set-line for the next chapter’s combat-pivot.
- Yosaku interposes himself, tries to restrain Luffy and Sanji (page 17, bottom tier). The Ch. 76 Yosaku-cannot-operate-at-Arlong-tier exit-rationale is here re-deployed: he is trying to pull the Straw Hats out before the officer-fight starts. recent-chapter: he was supposed to have exited Ch. 76 — speaker-attribution may need verification, but the line ‘You’ll get us all in trouble!!’ fits Yosaku’s register.
- Chapter title OK, Let’s STAND UP! + cover-page panel-design STAND BY / STAND THE PAIN / STAND UP (page 1 title page). The cover composition: a six-panel grid showing Luffy, Zoro (with sword), Sanji (weeping, covering face), Nami (hat covering eye), Usopp (goggles, helmet). Each Straw Hat is in a STAND BY / STAND THE PAIN posture; the chapter’s title declares the pivot to STAND UP. The chapter is structurally the arc’s stand-up beat — the crew transitions from enduring (the prior chapters’ suffering-tier) to fighting-back (this chapter onward).
- SBS Question Corner continued (page 18) — reader-takeover gag + canonization of Find Panda Man as a Where’s-Waldo Oda running-gag mechanic. Confirms the Vol. 6 SBS Panda Man introduction.
Foreshadowing seeds planted
Payoffs (seeds from earlier chapters that resolve here)
Mentions / appearances
- Luffy — walks into Arlong Park alone (page 2), confronts Arlong face-to-face for the first time (‘Which one of you is Arlong?’). Single-shots two fishmen mooks (pages 3-4). Argues mid-combat with Sanji (page 6). Grabs Momoo by the horns and throws him through a mountain (pages 13-16). The chapter’s combat-feat-tier protagonist. Public self-identification as a pirate at the threshold of an enemy’s headquarters (page 2). The chapter is Luffy’s arrival-at-Arlong-Park chapter — the configuration the arc has been building toward since Ch. 69.
- Arlong — at his bench-hall when Luffy walks in (page 2). Replies ‘That would be me.’ / ‘Is that so? And what’s a Luffy?’ with full shark-tooth close-up. Page 17 — matches Sanji’s clobber word back at him (‘I was just thinking about clobbering you, too. Well that works out perfectly.’). The chapter is Arlong’s first face-to-face with the arc-protagonist.
- Sanji — arrives mid-Luffy-mook-demolition (page 5). Catches sight of Nami crying off-stage; pivots from calm-aggrieved to full-mouth shout: ‘You made our navigator… CRY!!!!’ (page 5). Argues with Luffy mid-combat (page 6: ‘You always have to dive right in, don’t you?’). Recognizes Momoo from Ch. 73 (page 11: ‘Oh, it’s just him.’ / ‘So he works for these guys.’). Delivers chapter’s mission-statement (page 16: ‘I came here to clobber… YOU!!!!’) target-locked on Arlong. The chapter installs Sanji-as-Nami-crew-role-defender (navigator-framing).
- Zoro — arrives with the crew (page 7 — visible in green-haramaki). Stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Sanji to interpose the crew between Yosaku/Johnny/villagers and the Arlong-Pirates (page 8: ‘If you insist on butting into this fight, you’ll have to go through us!!’). Delivers the chapter’s scene-set-line: ‘Now the real players appear.’ (page 17, bottom tier).
- Usopp — arrives at Arlong Park alongside Sanji and Zoro (page 7 — ‘I-It’s okay with me if you don’t share, Luffy.’). Comic-relief register: nervously lurking behind a column, hoping Luffy will take all the fight. Reacts to Momoo’s arrival: ‘AGH! WHAT IS IT!?’ (page 9 bottom). The chapter is Usopp’s first chapter on-page at Arlong Park since his Ch. 75 fake-killing — he is alive, on-side, and on-deck.
- Nami — off-page but the chapter’s emotional axis. Sanji catches sight of her crying (page 5 — small inset panel of Nami, hand-to-face, ‘help…’ / ‘Luffy…’ murmured). This is Nami’s first on-page line in the chapter (uttered in a small inset). The chapter installs Nami’s help… murmur as a pre-doctrine-break beat — she is almost asking for help, in a single soft-voiced inset. Forward-link: the Ch. 93 Luffy!!! Help me!!! break is here rehearsed in soft register.
- Hatchan — present at Arlong Park as crew’s summoner (page 9 — ‘Arise, giant warrior!!! / Do you boneheads think… you can push Lord Arlong around? I’ll turn you into chum!!!’). Blows the trumpet to summon Momoo (TOOT TOOT-TOOO!). Names Luffy as a Devil-Fruit user (page 15: ‘He has the power of the Devil Fruit!!!!’). Releases Momoo when summon fails (‘Go ahead, Momoo.’, page 12).
- Kuroobi — steps up at chapter-close (page 17): ‘I’ll show you that humans are no match for fish-men!!’ Officer-stand declared.
- Choo — steps up at chapter-close (page 17): ‘What he did to our comrades wasn’t nice!!’ / ‘Looks like we’ll have to get involved.’ Officer-stand declared.
- Momoo — re-summoned by Hatchan (page 9, SPLOOSH / PLUP). Big-eye close-up emerging from water (page 10). Recognizes Luffy, flinches, tries to flee (page 11, FLINCH!! / MOO-HOO!!!). Released by Hatchan (page 12). Charges Luffy anyway (page 12 bottom). Grabbed by the horns and thrown through a mountain by Luffy (pages 13-16). The chapter is Momoo’s second on-page combat-appearance and the first traumatized-flees-from-Luffy register in the series.
- Yosaku — apparently back on-page after the Ch. 76 exit (page 17, bottom tier — tugging at Luffy and Sanji’s collars/arms, ‘You’ll get us all in trouble!!’ / ‘Consider the danger, you fool!!’). recent-chapter speaker-attribution — fits Yosaku’s register, may also fit Johnny. Worth verifying via the Cocoyasi-villager outside-narrator panel (page 8).
- Johnny — likely off-page or back at the skiff with Yosaku per Ch. 76 exit. Possibly on-page as one of the outside-narrators on page 8 (Yosaku-or-Johnny ambiguity). Speaker-attribution pending.
- Nojiko — off-page. The chapter’s Cocoyasi-side narration (page 8: ‘You see him send that monster Arlong flying!!’) appears to be villager-witnesses, not Nojiko herself.
- Arlong Pirates — mooks demolished by Luffy (pages 3-4). Recognize Usopp / Zoro / Hatchan-tricked-Sanji on sight (page 7). Officer-trio coordinated stand at chapter-close (page 17). The crew’s first all-officers-versus-Straw-Hats beat.
- Straw Hat Pirates — Luffy + Sanji + Zoro + Usopp on-page at Arlong Park; Nami off-stage but visible in a small inset. The crew is physically arrived at the arc-location for the first time in the arc.
- Arlong Park — chapter’s primary setting. The chapter shows the interior bench-hall and entrance dock (page 2), the central courtyard (pages 3-12), the dock/pool-mouth (pages 13-15) where Momoo emerges.
- Cocoyasi Village — implied off-stage. Villagers narrate-witness on page 8.
- Gosa Village — referenced (page 9: ‘The one that decimated Gosa!!’) — Momoo’s destruction-vector status canonized in the villagers’ voice.
- Grand Line — referenced (page 9: ‘The monster from the Grand Line!!’) — Momoo’s origin canonized in the villagers’ voice for the second time in the arc.
Notable panels
- Page 1 — Title page: ONE PIECE × OK, Let’s STAND UP! : six-panel grid (left column: ONE PIECE letters; right column: STAND BY 1 / STAND BY 2 / STAND THE PAIN 3 / STAND BY 5 / STAND BY 4). Each numbered panel shows a Straw Hat in a STAND BY / STAND THE PAIN posture: Luffy (panel 1 — close-up), Zoro (panel 2 — sword extended), Sanji (panel 3 — STAND THE PAIN, weeping, hands covering face), Nami (panel 5 — hat covering eye), Usopp (panel 4 — goggles and helmet, peeking out). Episode 82 OK, Let’s STAND UP! declared on the right margin. Open questions raised
- What happens to Momoo? The chapter ends with Momoo flying through a mountain off-page. Per Ch. 75 pattern, Momoo survives. Pending: confirmation of defeated-and-survives status in the next chapter.
- Why is Yosaku still on-page after his Ch. 76 exit? Yosaku / Johnny exited the arc in Ch. 76. The chapter shows what appears to be Yosaku trying to restrain Luffy/Sanji at chapter-close. recent-chapter: speaker-attribution may need verification — could be Yosaku, Johnny, or a Cocoyasi villager.
- What is Nami’s help…-murmur status? Nami is on-page in a small inset on page 5, hand-to-face, murmuring help… / Luffy…. The chapter installs a soft-register pre-doctrine-break. Forward-question: will Nami’s help-doctrine-break happen later in the arc (the Ch. 93 Luffy!!! Help me!!! configuration), or is this chapter the actual break? Pending arc-climax pattern.
- How does the Sanji-Arlong duel-lock get redirected to Sanji-vs-Kuroobi? The chapter sets up Sanji-vs-Arlong mutually (mutual clobber declaration). The next chapters reassign Sanji to Kuroobi. Pending: the structural pivot mechanism.
- What does Luffy do with the Devil Fruit identification by Arlong-Pirates? The Arlong-Pirates now know Luffy’s power-class. Forward: Arlong’s water-as-trap-for-Luffy combat-tactic.
- What is the Cocoyasi-village-watch composition’s role going forward? The villagers narrate-witness the chapter’s combat (page 8). Forward-question: the villagers as audience-side of the arc-climax combat. Pre-loads the villagers-celebrate-arc-end composition.
- What is the STAND UP chapter-title’s structural payoff? The chapter title declares the crew’s pivot from standing the pain to standing up. Forward-question: the chapter-title-as-thesis pattern fires its arc-climax payoff when the crew fully stands up (the Ch. 93-94 help me / of course I will configuration).
- What is the Find-Panda-Man SBS’s structural-payoff for the series? The Ch. 82 SBS canonizes the Find Panda Man running-gag. Forward-question: every later Panda Man cameo across the series traces structurally to this Ch. 82 SBS — the Where’s-Waldo mechanic is officially Oda-declared here.
