Logia (fire-element) · current: Sabo (was Ace, deceased Ch. 574; fruit regrown, eaten by Sabo Ch. 744) · first demonstrated on-page Ch. 158 · fruit-name not yet uttered on-page
Profile
The Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit) is a Logia-class Devil Fruit that allows the user to create, control, and become fire. First demonstrated on-page in Ch. 158 p. 18 by Ace with the named attack Sun Flare!!! — a flame-projectile that knocks Smoker off Luffy. The follow-up panel (p. 19) shows Ace’s body as flame (DO OO~~ / FWOOO), confirming Logia-class element-body morphology. The fruit name is not yet uttered on-page in Ch. 158; it remains forward-canon. This is the second on-page Logia debut in the series after Moku Moku no Mi (Smoker), and the first on-page Logia-vs-Logia combat stalemate is articulated in the same chapter (smoke vs. fire — “too evenly matched to settle this now.”).
Solar/fire encoding — installs the sun-coded fire register that runs through Ace’s character arc to Marineford. First on-page Ace solar/fire-encoding install.
Logia-pair stalemate (Ch. 158 install): against another Logia of equivalent elemental rank — specifically smoke (Moku Moku no Mi) — the two elements neutralize each other. Ace to Smoker (p. 19): “You may be smoke, but I’m fire. …We’re too evenly matched to settle this now.”First on-page articulation of the elemental-Logia-pair-neutralization doctrine in the series. Forward-canon: this matrix is transitive (fire < magma → Ace dies to Akainu; ice < magma → Aokiji loses to Akainu; etc.).
Lore & theories
Sun-encoding install (Ch. 158)
The chapter’s named attack — Sun Flare!!! — installs the solar/fire-encoding that anchors Ace’s character arc through Marineford. The naming is not merely flame-coded but sun-coded, pre-loading the Joy-Boy/Nika sun-imagery thematic stack across the series and the forward Sabo-inheritance of the fruit (Dressrosa).
First on-page Logia-vs-Logia stalemate doctrine
Ch. 158 p. 19 — Ace, mid-flame, to Smoker: “You may be smoke, but I’m fire.” / “We’re too evenly matched to settle this now.” — first on-page articulation of the Logia-vs-Logia elemental-pairing stalemate doctrine in the series. This single line is the foundational install for the elemental matrix that governs every later Logia-vs-Logia combat in the series. Cross-link Ace Smoke-Vs-Fire Logia-Pair Combat Stalemate.
Etymology
Mera-mera (メラメラ) is a Japanese gitaigo (mimetic word) for flame crackling / fire burning vigorously. The fruit’s name is the SFX of the element it controls — the same naming-grammar as moku-moku (smoke billowing) for Smoker’s fruit. The character-name = fruit-name onomatopoeia pattern is the Logia-naming-convention prototype.
