Poneglyph

Structural lore — what Oda has confirmed about the indestructible inscribed stones. The open question of what the assembled corpus actually says lives in Void Century and Ancient Kingdom and True History Ohara Was Killed For. This is the structural-lore note (NOT the Alabasta-poneglyph Foreshadowing seeds, which it links).

What we know

• Ch. 193: First on-page mention of a poneglyph — Crocodile’s “Where is the poneglyph recorded?” interrogation of Cobra. Canonizes the poneglyph as a record of history the World Government suppresses, and the first poneglyph mention linked to a weapon (Pluton’s location). See Ancient Weapons.
• Ch. 203: Poneglyphs are decipherable historical records; only Nico Robin can read the script (the Alabasta stone = kingdom dynastic history). First on-page poneglyph reading in the series.
• Ch. 218: Robin distinguishes ordinary kingdom-history poneglyphs from the single poneglyph that recounts the true history (later canonized as the Rio Poneglyph), and frames the corpus as a distributed cipher — “can these scripts be spun together to tell of untold history?” The read-them-all premise that drives the forward-canon Road-Poneglyph hunt.
• Ch. 272: The script is the writing of the lost city Shandora’s makers; “the only people who knew how to use these symbols were the ones who created the Ponegliff” (pp. 2–3). The makers’ creed: “We are the ones who weave history… Hold the truth in your heart, keep your mouth silent” (p. 3).
• Ch. 301 (pp. 13–14): ⭐ Two types of Poneglyph — stones that hold information, and stones that show the locations of the other stones. Connecting and reading the scattered stones “will complete a text, the real Poneglyph, which doesn’t yet exist” — a document that fills in the “blank history” for the first time. First on-page statement of the distributed-cipher / network nature.
• Ch. 301 (pp. 11–12): A poneglyph can record the location of an Ancient Weapon (Poseidon, here) — distinct from kingdom history. First time a poneglyph is shown encoding a weapon location on-page.
• Ch. 301 (p. 10): The makers’ creed recurs in full on the Shandora stone — “We are the ones who weave history… keep your mouth silent… with the reverberations of the great bell,” binding the Poneglyph-makers to the Golden Bell of Shandora.
• Ch. 301 (p. 12): ⭐ Gol D. Roger could read AND write the script — he carved a message (“I hereby guide this document to its end. Pirate Gol D. Roger”) onto the Shandora Poneglyph, proving he reached Skypiea, was poneglyph-literate, and reached Raftel. See Roger’s Message On The Shandora Poneglyph I Hereby Guide This Document To Its End.
• Ch. 344 (pp. 10–12): Decoding the Poneglyphs (“Poneglifs”) is “classified by the government as a global high crime”; “since antiquity, searching for, researching and decoding the Poneglifs” has been forbidden (p. 10). Nico Robin is named as “in all likelihood the only person in the world who can decipher the writing” (p. 11), and that literacy is the mechanism by which the Ancient Weapons could be reactivated (pp. 11–12). On-page tie: Poneglyph-reading → Ancient-Weapon reactivation → Robin’s bounty. (Iceberg lays this out while confronting Robin over Pluton.)
• Ch. 507: ⭐ Roger read the Poneglyphs WITHOUT deciphering the ancient language — he “was able to hear the voices of all things in the world” (Rayleigh, pp. 6-7). The Sky-Island (Shandora) Poneglyph carried Roger’s own added message in that same ancient script (“Pirate Gol D. Roger. I hereby guide this document to its end.”) (Robin, p. 4). • Ch. 616 (p. 7): ⭐ A Poneglyph is on Fish-Man Island. Nico Robin pries the location from the fleeing border patrol — “The Poneglyph is here” — and rides toward the Forest of the Sea, certain “This country should hold the key… to the 100-Year Void.” Adds Fish-Man Island to the map of known Poneglyph sites. • Ch. 628 (p. 15): ⭐ A poneglyph can be a letter/apology, not only a history-stone or a road-stone. Nico Robin reads the Forest of the Sea poneglyph and finds it “different from the other poneglyphs” — “almost like a letter… or maybe an apology” — broadening the on-page taxonomy of poneglyph content beyond True-History and Road stones. • Ch. 649 (pp. 16-18): ⭐ The Forest-of-the-Sea poneglyph confirmed as Joy Boy’s apology; Robin reads two distinct stones. The Forest of the Sea Poneglyph is revealed to be Joy Boy’s apology to the Mermaid Princess of the Void Century — a Poneglyph used to carry a personal message/promise, not just kingdom history or a weapon location. Nico Robin confirms she can read it (“I am a survivor of Ohara”) and links it to the sky-island Poneglyph she read two years ago (Ch. 301), which recorded the location of an Ancient Weapon. • Ch. 817 (pp. 13–14): ⭐ A poneglyph can be RED — visibly distinct in color and stated function. At Zou, behind the centuries-old Kozuki crest in the whale-tree, sits a red poneglyph — the first poneglyph shown to differ in color from the ordinary grey kind. A mink duke calls it one “of a different usage, apparently” and asks Nico Robin to read it; the minks recall that Ohara deciphered those runes. Broadens the on-page poneglyph taxonomy by color/function and ties the Wano Kozuki Clan to poneglyph custody. See Red Poneglyph Of Different Usage At Zou, Kozuki.
• Ch. 818 (pp. 6–14): ⭐ The “location/Road” class is NAMED on-page as the ROAD PONEGLYPH, and the Poneglyph-makers are identified. The red Zou stone is a Road Poneglyph; there are exactly four in the world, each marking a point — connect the four and read them together and they “contain the coordinates” of Raftel, the final island (pp. 6–8). Two are owned by Emperors (Big Mom @ Whole Cake Island; Kaido), one is at Zou, one is in an unknown spot (pp. 8–9). You need only make a rubbing/print of a stone, not steal it; collectors of Void-Century prints exist “but none of them is able to decipher the meaning” — only Nico Robin can (p. 10). Crucially, the Kozuki Clan of Wano CREATED the poneglyphs ~800 years (eight centuries) ago as master stonemasons, passing down only the runes-reading skill (cut short in Kozuki Oden’s generation) (pp. 12–14). • Ch. 820: Robin cites the Road Poneglyphs the minks told her about (p. 6). Crocus’s navigation doctrine (relayed by the dukes, pp. 7–8): following the Log to where all routes/needles converge brings a realization about the ancient writing on the poneglyphs, the existence of Raftel, and the civilization that made them. Law asks Luffy for poneglyph rubbings (p. 16).
• Ch. 831 (p. 3): The Sanji-retrieval crew states its infiltration goal is to make a rubbing/tracing of a poneglyph — Brook: “I shall bring back a poneglyph tracing.” Reinforces that poneglyph contents are reproduced by copy/tracing, not by moving the stone (plan only; no rubbing obtained on-page). Chronology / structure

The poneglyphs are indestructible inscribed stones authored by the Void-Century civilization that built Shandora. They form two functional classes:

Read together, the corpus completes “the real Poneglyph, which doesn’t yet exist” — the full “blank history.” A single literate reader (Robin) must travel the scattered network to assemble it; Roger already did so once.
