Firsts
  • ABSALOM is named (pp. 7-8): an unseen 'invisible man' prowling Hogback's mansion who grabbed Nami; he is in on the bounty-hunt, and on hearing the crew's bounties declares he has found a BRIDE — 'I like that woman! I'll make her mine!' — fixating on Nami.
  • PERONA is named (p. 7): a subordinate in the mansion (laugh 'Oho ho ho') who recites the Straw Hats' bounties — 'six bounties this time... the captain is 300 million' — and announces 'We have a big job tonight!'
  • DR. HOGBACK is reframed as the prime suspect: Chopper reveres him as a great surgeon and defends him, but the others (and Chopper's own 'hunch') suspect Hogback is working WITH the zombies; his mansion proves to be saturated with reanimated traps (pp. 7-9).
  • The mansion is a kill-box of 'surprise zombies': a hand reaches OUT OF A PAINTING to grab Chopper, a bear-skin rug, a wall trophy and a pig-headed zombie (OINKCHUCK) all animate — 'This mansion is full of zombies!!! Nami was right!' (pp. 12-18).
  • CINDRY is named (pp. 10, 19): 'the girl that hates plates,' shown only as a PHOTOGRAPH on a stand in a shrine-like room — established as alive in the picture but absent in person ('gone to bed').

Summary

Outside the mansion, Luffy’s group faces Cerberus — a three-headed zombie hound (one head a fox) covered in terrible wounds; Zoro tries to calm it, gets bitten, and knocks it out with a single punch. Luffy then bags two more impossible creatures, an old “tree guy” and a unicorn, and tries to recruit them. Inside Hogback’s Mansion, the other group — Nami, Usopp, Chopper — is hunted by an unseen attacker. Nami insists an invisible man grabbed her; Usopp and Chopper rationalize away everything they’ve seen (zombies are “just people in a graveyard,” the ghosts “just weird birds”). In a side room the mansion’s masters scheme: Perona reads off the crew’s new bounties (the captain at 300 million) and calls for “a big job tonight,” while the invisible Absalom declares Nami his future bride. Chopper, who idolizes the legendary surgeon Dr. Hogback, refuses to believe the doctor is behind the undead — until a hand reaches out of a wall painting and drags him in. The trio are then ambushed by a roomful of “surprise zombies” (a talking pig-head named Oinkchuck, a bear-skin rug, a wall trophy), set the place alight fleeing the fire-vulnerable corpses, find the doors locked, and tumble through a fireplace secret-passage into a shrine-like room dominated by a photograph of a girl — Cindry, “the girl that hates plates.”
