Sogeking Sniper King Masked Persona Debut

The seed
After quitting the crew at Water Seven (Ch. 333 ) and refusing to crawl back out of pride (“I quit the crew, remember?!” / “How can I possibly be with you again?! After all that blustering…”, Ch. 367 p. 17), Usopp manufactures a wholly separate masked identity — SNIPER KING (Sogeking) — complete with mask, cape and flag, to fight for the same cause while preserving his face.
Usopp reappears masked and declares himself a new ally: “MY NAME… IS SNIPER KING! ” and offers to join the rescue — “I shall fight alongside you!” / “I need no particular reason to lend you a hand in your endeavor!” The disguise is deliberately paper-thin (visible long nose, identical build, Sanji recognizing him at once) — the comedic tell that this is a face-saving device, not a real new ally. The “King of Snipers” self-naming continues Usopp’s running pattern of branding himself a great marksman before earning it.
Ch. 370 (pp. 2-6) — the persona’s first on-page RESCUE beat
The masked Sniper King slips into Robin ’s Sea Train car to mount a one-man rescue — “I am the King of Sniping!! The Sniper King!! …I’ve come to save you!” He knows the rescue plan in detail (Sanji /Franky aboard; Luffy on a second Sea Train) and offers Robin “octoshoes” to climb out the window, then ducks out when CP9 grows suspicious (“this looks suspicious”, p. 6). Aboard the kidnap Sea Train during the “Necessary Evil” climax, the masked Sniper King surfaces with Sanji and fires a “Smoke Star ” to cover the planned getaway (”…Smoke Star!!!” / “Sniper King…”, p. 18) as Sanji orders Franky to “cut car three loose.” A further beat of the departed crewman (Ch. 333 ) acting for the crew under the concealed identity. As “Sniper King,” Usopp snipes the keys off Robin ’s Sea-Prism cuffs from the Tower of Law and frees her (pp. 2-5) — the masked persona’s single most consequential combat act, executed while the crew openly calls him both “Sniper King” and “Usopp!!” The transparent disguise still hasn’t been retracted on-page; status stays pending. The masked “Sniper King” persona (Usopp ) is still running, mingling with the giants Oimo & Kashii in Water Seven — someone asks “Hey, Sniper King, are you sure you should be here?” The unmask / Usopp-rejoin payoff remains forward. Ch. 435 — the mask fools the World Government
The WG issues a separate bounty for “The King of Snipers, Sniper King ” (30,000,000) and even the Straw Hats don’t recognize the poster (“Who is this?”, p. 18; Sanji : “What is that idiot doing?”, p. 9). The Sogeking / Sniper King persona successfully conceals Usopp ’s identity at an institutional level — the disguise works . Ch. 465 — the mask-as-confidence mechanic in active combat (post-rejoin reinforcement)
Cornered by Kumacy and despairing as “Usopp,” he deliberately switches into the Sniper King persona to steady his nerves and keep fighting his duel with Perona (pp. 16-17). A post-rejoin reinforcement that the disguise is fundamentally a confidence/identity device — the persona still does psychological work after the @0438 unmasking. status already confirmed (paid off @0438) — evidence only.
The payoff
Ch. 438 (“Pride”) —
PAID OFF: the pride conflict resolves; Usopp drops the mask and rejoins as himself
The transparent Sniper King / Sogeking persona has done exactly what the seed predicted — a face-saving bridge that let Usopp act for the crew without retracting his Water Seven resignation. Here that resignation is finally undone. Zoro sets the rule that Usopp may only return if he apologizes (pp. 3-5); cornered at the water’s edge, Usopp exhausts every casual gambit (still half-clinging to the alias — “I’m Sniper King, don’t you realize?!”, p. 13), is forced to break (pp. 14-15), and on pp. 16-18 kneels and screams a full, unmasked apology — “I’M SORRY! I’M SORRY FOR BEING SO STUBBORN… I want to be with you guys… please let me JOIN!” Luffy pulls him back aboard (“Hurry up and grab on, you idiot!”, p. 19). Why this matters
A wardrobe-foreshadow + self-naming beat: Oda converts an unresolved character schism (Usopp’s departure over pride and the “can’t keep up with the monsters” wound, Ch. 331 –Ch. 333 ) into a transparent disguise the audience and crew see through immediately. The paper-thin mask is the structural promise that the estrangement is temporary — the persona is a bridge, not a replacement. The “Sniper King” self-coronation also extends Usopp’s lifelong self-branding register (Captain Usopp, the great warrior of the sea, later God Usopp).
