The seed

After quitting the crew at Water Seven (Ch. 333) and refusing to crawl back out of pride (“I quit the crew, remember?!” / “How can I possibly be with you again?! After all that blustering…”, Ch. 367 p. 17), Usopp manufactures a wholly separate masked identity — SNIPER KING (Sogeking) — complete with mask, cape and flag, to fight for the same cause while preserving his face.

The payoff

(Forward — the persona persists through the Enies Lobby assault: self-intro “friend of Mr. Usopp from Sniper Island” @0376; frees the giants Oimo & Kashii by exposing the WG lie @0384. The pride conflict resolves and Usopp formally rejoins the crew forward of 387. Mark confirmed + set payoff_chapter when the formal reunion beat is synthesized.)

Why this matters

A wardrobe-foreshadow + self-naming beat: Oda converts an unresolved character schism (Usopp’s departure over pride and the “can’t keep up with the monsters” wound, Ch. 331Ch. 333) into a transparent disguise the audience and crew see through immediately. The paper-thin mask is the structural promise that the estrangement is temporary — the persona is a bridge, not a replacement. The “Sniper King” self-coronation also extends Usopp’s lifelong self-branding register (Captain Usopp, the great warrior of the sea, later God Usopp).
