Sabaody Archipelago
- Name
- シャボンディ諸島 (Shabondi Shotō)
- Region
- Grand Line
- First seen
- Ch. 496
- Name meaning
- **Sabaody / Shabondy** (シャボンディ諸島 / *Shabondi Shotō*) — from **シャボン (*shabon*) = 'soap'** (a loanword from Portuguese/Spanish *sabão*/*jabón*, entering Japanese via 16th-c. traders) and especially **シャボン玉 (*shabondama*) = 'soap bubble.'** The name literally encodes the archipelago's defining feature, **first shown in this very chapter (p. 13-17)**: the Yarukiman Mangrove roots exhale floating, soap-like resin bubbles, and that same resin is the basis of the **ship-coating** mechanic. A name that *is* the reveal — the soap-bubble etymology and the on-page bubble mechanic land together @0496, so it confirms rather than foreshadows.
Grand Line (Red Line / Fish-Man Island gateway) · named Ch. 490 · first shown Ch. 496
Profile
Sabaody Archipelago — named and charted on Camie’s map in Ch. 491 (p. 10). Composed of numbered “Groves”; Grove 44 lies just east of the archipelago. It is the gateway leg of the route toward Fish-Man Island (“from there, we can just ask the fish for directions”). Its surrounding waters are a hub for human trafficking — dozens of kidnapping crews (the Flying Fish Riders, the Macro Pirates) operate here, and “mermaids fetch an especially high price” (p. 14). First shown on-page in Ch. 496 (splash + caption “Sabaody Archipelago — Grand Line”, p. 13): it is not an island and has no magnetic force (won’t rewrite a Log Pose — the needle still points to Fish-Man Island) — a clump of 79 giant Yarukiman Mangrove trees, the world’s largest mangroves, each a numbered Grove with its own town/facilities and linked by bridges (the crew docks at Grove 41); the roots exhale floating soap-like resin bubbles. Home to Sabaody Park (an amusement park with a Ferris wheel). Because it sits at the foot of the Red Line beneath Mariejoa, World Nobles (Celestial Dragons) walk the town in person.
Key chapters
- Ch. 490 — first mentioned as the crew’s next destination.
- Ch. 491 — named and charted on Camie’s map; the slave-economy of its waters is established (p. 14).
- Ch. 492 — re-mentioned as the crew’s heading; the Flying Fish Riders base (Flying Fish Riders’ Hideout) is established as a town built out at sea “east of the Sabaody Archipelago” (p. 3).
- Ch. 496 — first shown on-page (splash + caption “Sabaody Archipelago — Grand Line”, p. 13). Revealed to be not an island and to have no magnetic force — a clump of 79 giant Yarukiman Mangrove trees, each a numbered Grove with its own town/facilities, linked by bridges (crew docks at Grove 41); roots exhale floating soap-like resin bubbles. Home to Sabaody Park (Ferris wheel); the World Nobles walk the town because it sits beneath Mariejoa.
- Ch. 497 — the Straw Hats’ walking tour of the archipelago: bubble bikes (“Bonchari,” 500 berries/day), bubble-coated round hotels for permitted Red-Line crossers, and ship coating (Ship Coating) arranged at the Grove 30 shopping mall for the descent to Fish-Man Island (pp. 2-12). The first on-page Celestial Dragons (Saint Roswald, Saint Shalria) walk the town from Mariejoa, and the runaway slave Devil Dias is killed by his exploding collar — establishing Sabaody as a human-trafficking and slave-auction hub (pp. 13-19).
- Ch. 498 — the lawless inland groves shown in detail: the archipelago’s “groves” are split into seven labeled zones (p. 4 map) — Groves 1-29 are human-shop lands the Navy ignores (“the Navy doesn’t come inland”), plus Sabaody Park, sightseeing/souvenir districts, a shipyard-and-coating-specialist quarter, a hotel park, and the Navy base / government port. The land party reaches Grove 13 and Shakky’s Rip-off Bar; Shakky reveals the eleven Supernovas have all converged here because the seven Grand Line routes terminate at the Red Line (pp. 10-11).
- Ch. 1113 — Shown in the montage reacting to the news that Vegapunk “is already dead?!” and being held hostage by the Straw Hats (p. 14).
