Chapter 658: The Biscuits Room

Summary

Inside the island’s research facility, the four gassed-and-abducted Straw Hats — Nami, Sanji, Chopper, and Franky — flee their former cell through the “Biscuits Room” with a mob of frightened giant children in tow. The kids mistake Franky for a robot, Chopper for a plushie, and a talking severed samurai head (who is searching for a boy named Momonosuke) for a monster, while guards under “the Master” close in with gas bombs. The children — told they are “sick” and desperate to go home — beg the crew to save them, and Nami refuses to leave them; Sanji clears the guards with Diable Jamble’s “Collier Strike.” Offshore on the Thousand Sunny, Robin and Brook (Brook was left behind because the enemy mistook the skeleton for a corpse) deduce that four crewmates were gassed and carried off, and fend off leopard- and giraffe-bodied centaurs bearing “CC”-branded baby Den Den Mushi. On the burning side, Luffy, Zoro, and Usopp (with the samurai’s runaway legs — which Luffy nicknames “Ashimaro” — and a befriended, still-unnamed centaur) resolve to cross to the ice side to rescue their captured crew. The facility’s Master is revealed to be a hidden figure who, like Vegapunk, can build laser weapons. Finally, Vice Admiral Smoker’s G-5 fleet nears Punk Hazard’s northwest coast as the chapter delivers its big reveal: the island’s fire-and-ice climate is the scar of a duel between Admirals Akainu and Aokiji. New reveals

• Punk Hazard’s split climate is the aftermath of an Admiral duel. Akainu and Aokiji “chose Punk Hazard to be their dueling ground,” and theirs was “a battle fierce enough to change the entire climate of the island” — the origin of the burning half and the frozen half (p. 19).
• Vegapunk’s failed weapons experiment poisoned the island. “When stupid Vegapunk’s chemical weapons experiment failed four years ago… it rendered the whole island uninhabitable!!” — the gas is everywhere; the island was declared off-limits. Two years ago it was “just a barren island — no fire, no ice,” and “surprisingly, no longer toxic,” yet the present gas is “unnatural… shouldn’t be this thick” (pp. 18–19).
• Captive giant children. A facility holds gigantic children who were told they are “sick,” beg to “go home,” ask if the strangers are “Frozen Ones” who escaped, and plead to be saved (pp. 2, 6–7).
• “The Master” — a hidden laser-tech rival to Vegapunk. The facility’s boss can “produce laser technology” thought unique to Vegapunk’s Pacifistas; his centaur patrols carry baby Den Den Mushi marked “CC” (pp. 12, 17). Name not given on-page.
