Name meaning
エニエス・ロビー *Eniesu Robī* — VIZ 'Enies Lobby.' NO confirmed Oda etymology exists for 'Enies.' Only 'Lobby' is legible: the island is the World Government's 'Judicial Island' (司法の島 *Shihō no Shima*), the antechamber/'lobby' through which the condemned pass on their way to Impel Down and Marineford — a waiting-room name for the gateway to WG justice. 'Enies' is unattested (fan guesses only); recorded as unknown rather than invented.

Grand Line · first mentioned: Ch. 340 · first shown on-page: Ch. 375 (the Judicial Island — tower, ocean-hole, circular waterfall)

Profile

A destination of the Sea Train out of Water Seven — the 11 AM train reaches Enies Lobby, and it runs even through the Aqua Laguna storm-weather (Ch. 340 p. 8). Named only this chapter; not yet shown or described on-page. Forward-canon: a World Government judicial island and the destination toward which the hunted Nico Robin is moved — a major forward thread-seed for the arc.

Etymology

VIZ “Enies Lobby” (エニエス・ロビー Eniesu Robī). There is no confirmed Oda etymology for “Enies.” What is legible is “Lobby”: the island is the World Government’s “Judicial Island” (司法の島 Shihō no Shima) — the antechamber / waiting-room (“lobby”) through which the condemned are processed before being shipped on to Impel Down and Marineford. So “Lobby” reads as the gateway/waystation to WG justice. “Enies” is unattested — fan theories abound (none sourced to Oda), so it is recorded here as unknown rather than guessed. Confidence on the whole name: speculative.

Arc-by-arc / history

Enies Lobby — present day (Ch. 428 — “Let’s Go Back”) — *the bombardment severs the bridge supports and destroys the escape ship; the Going Merry arrives to extract the crew

Enies Lobby — present day (Ch. 426 — “A Ship Waiting for Wind”) — *the Buster Call fleet arrives at the Bridge of Hesitation; the “secure for 800 years” framing

  • The Buster Call fleet physically arrives at the Bridge of Hesitation — Marine command broadcasts “all vessels take position around the Bridge of Hesitation” and the warships ring the bridge and escort ship (pp. 5-7).
  • The order frames the assault around the island’s standing: “Enies Lobby has been secure for 800 years… watched over by CP9 for generations… lawlessness cannot be left to flourish in this world” (p. 7).
  • Cross-link Buster Call, Bridge of Hesitation, CP9, Marines.

Enies Lobby — present day (Ch. 421 — “Gear Three”) — *the Buster Call is carried out; the Tower of Law is smashed by Gear Third

  • The Buster Call is carried out on the island (pp. 2-4): the order “Carry out the Buster Call!! … Raze Enies Lobby to the ground!!” is given and the fleet opens indiscriminate fire; only the Tower of Law (Bridge of Hesitation) where Robin is held is spared “by private agreement with Admiral Aokiji.”
  • The lower passage under the Bridge of Hesitation floods toward sea level (pp. 7-8) as the duel continues.
  • Luffy vs. Lucci: Luffy’s Gear Third Gum-Gum Giant Pistol smashes clean through the Tower of Law on the closing splash (pp. 18-19).
  • Cross-link Buster Call, Bridge of Hesitation, Aokiji, Nico Robin, Luffy, Rob Lucci, Gomu Gomu no Mi.

Enies Lobby — present day (Ch. 420 — “Buster Call”) — *the Buster Call bombardment begins; the protective whirlpool drops

  • Sogeking frees Robin (snipes the cuff keys; Franky finishes the unlock), and the crew regroups to seize the escort ship (pp. 2-4, 11-12).
  • The Buster Call fleet opens fire: warships beyond the defensive perimeter bomb the island and the Tower of Law (“KABOOM!!!”, pp. 6-9); Kokoro names it (p. 12); the full fleet rises in a wide splash — “THE BUSTER CALL HAS STARTED!!” (pp. 18-19).
  • Opening the Gates of Justice cancels the seething whirlpool that kept ships out — it “has all but disappeared” (p. 7), clearing the fleet’s approach.
  • Luffy vs. Lucci continues in a support under the Bridge of Hesitation (Lucci in leopard-Zoan form, p. 12); Lucci threatens that the flooding seawater will drown everyone in the undersea passage (pp. 16-17).
  • Cross-link Buster Call, Gates of Justice, Usopp, Franky, Nico Robin, Kokoro, Luffy, Rob Lucci, Marines.

The government’s “floating courthouse” / judicial ship is shown arriving at Water Seven to take him (pp. 18–19).
