Summary
Gin survives the Krieg-flagship battle. On the Baratie deck, Sanji and the cooks attempt to load the wounded Krieg crew onto the Baratie’s supply boat over Patty/Carne’s loud objections. Gin — half-dead — wakes Luffy aboard the boat to return his straw hat, then verbally renounces his loyalty to Krieg: “From now on, I’m going to steer my own course.” He credits Luffy (“the kid”) as the source of the doctrine. Sanji and Gin part with mutual respect; Gin hopes to see Sanji again on the Grand Line. Luffy then directly re-issues his recruitment offer (“Then come with us now!!”). Sanji declines but commits to the Grand Line and the All Blue as his future destination — Zeff overhears and notes his disciple is still alight with the dream. The chapter pivots: in the Baratie’s employee dining room, Patty and Carne sabotage Sanji’s soup; Sanji confronts Zeff (“You phony sous-chef!”), and Zeff swings at him — the chapter ends on a Zeff-Sanji blow. The Buggy cover story (Part 22, “Ritchie au Vin”) confirms the cover-story reunion of Buggy with Mohji, Cabaji and Richie has occurred off-page; the crew is cooking Richie in a stew pot together.
New reveals
- Gin survives the Krieg-flagship engagement (the Pearl-strike + Krieg’s MH5 sequence) and walks off the deck under his own power, with the Baratie’s supply boat as Sanji’s parting gift (pages 6-9).
- Gin renounces Krieg on-page in spoken dialogue (page 5): “From now on, I’m going to steer my own course. I’ve been hiding in his shadow.” The Ch. 60 Gin Order To Kill Sanji Loyalty Test contract is broken on the Gin-side by verbal-renunciation rather than killing-blow.
- Gin cites Luffy as the moral source of his renunciation: “The kid taught me that!! When you really commit yourself… you don’t worry about the enemy or even about your own life.” (pages 4-5). The captain-as-moral-corrective recruitment-pattern register applies to a non-recruit — a recruit-adjacent character receives the captain’s doctrine.
- Gin foresees his own pirate-of-no-flag future — “I’ll be hunted like a wolf” (page 5). Self-aware about the cost of cutting his captain-bond.
- Patty and Carne plot a night-raid on Sanji while pretending to comply with his order to give the Krieg crew the supply boat (page 6) — internal-Baratie hostility against Sanji persists, telegraphing the chapter-end blow-up.
- Luffy issues a second on-page recruitment offer to Sanji (page 11): “Then come with us now!!” The Ch. 45 first-offer is re-issued in the post-Krieg-arc moment of opportunity.
- Sanji declines but commits to the Grand Line and the All Blue as future destination (page 11): “Now’s not the time. But someday I will go to the Grand Line.” The Sanji-recruitment is deferred, not abandoned — the Sanji Joins Crew Setup arc has its post-Krieg-victory re-offer on-page.
- Sanji’s chore-boy tenure ends today — “my time as chore boy ends today!!” (page 10). The Sanji Recruitment Bargain Setup Ch. 52 page-19 bargain (chore-boy-release for defeating Krieg-reinforcements) is honored by Zeff; the obstacle-to-recruitment is removed, leaving only the withheld-reason obstacle.
- Sanji’s revised stay-condition: apprenticeship-completion — “I’m staying on here as a cook… Until the crap-geezer acknowledges my skills” (page 10). The chore-boy threshold is replaced with an acknowledged-cook threshold; the recruit’s stay-condition has updated, not dissolved.
- Zeff hears Sanji’s All-Blue dream (page 12): close-up on Zeff with a small smile, “The fool. He still lights up when he talks about it…” The mentor’s awareness that the disciple’s transmitted-dream is still operative.
- Sanji opens hostilities against the Baratie cooks at chapter close — dumps Patty/Carne’s intentionally-bad soup on the floor (page 15: “It’s no good! Throw it out!!”), insults Zeff (“You phony sous-chef!! You’re a hack!!”, page 16), and Zeff swings at him (“Why, you sassy pup!!”, page 17). The chapter pivots from Krieg-arc closure to Sanji-leaves-the-Baratie-via-conflict setup.
- Buggy cover story Part 22 reunion confirmed: title card “Buggy’s Crew: After the Battle! Part 22: ‘Ritchie au Vin’ (Ritchie’s Pirate Crew, stewed in red wine.)” (page 1) — the Ch. 58 Buggy-Mohji-Richie reunion silhouette seed (Buggy Mohji Richie Reunion Cover Story) resolves: the reunion has occurred off-page and the unified crew is cooking Richie in a stew pot together. The off-page reunion is the cover-story’s structural payoff.

Notable panels
- Page 1 (cover) — Buggy cover Part 22 “Ritchie au Vin (Ritchie’s Pirate Crew, stewed in red wine)”. Buggy-clown-makeup pirates stir a giant stew pot around a kneeling Richie figure with carrots and lemons; a long-eared Mohji-bear-form silhouette holds a wine bottle at upper right. The cover-story’s reunion has occurred off-page; this is the unified-crew-domestic-scene installment.
- Pages 1-2 — Cooks (Patty + Carne) shout at Sanji on the Baratie deck (“That man tried to kill you!! Don’t you want revenge?” / “You breathed deadly poison!!”). Wide establishing shot of the Baratie exterior (page 2 middle panel) with Sanji slumped against the railing in the foreground and a silhouetted figure (Gin) standing above him in the right midground. The chapter’s immediate-post-battle mood-frame.
- Page 2 bottom — Gin (silhouetted, head bowed, half-erased silhouette): “When that kid wakes up, tell him something for me.” / Sanji: “Sanji…” The hand-off line that pivots the chapter.
- Page 3 top — Gin close-up (eyes closed, scar across forehead, bandanna): “Tell him I hope our paths will cross again… On the Grand Line. And pirating is the only thing I want to do.” The on-page Gin-is-still-a-pirate + Grand-Line-future-meeting commitment.
- Page 4 top — YA-OK!! — Gin coughs up blood (large jagged sound-balloons frame his face). The I-may-only-have-a-few-hours-left-to-live line lands (page 4 bottom-right).
- Page 5 — Gin’s renunciation monologue, three panels: “From now on, I’m going to steer my own course.” / “I’ve been hiding in his shadow. Loyalty to Krieg, ha! For a long time…” / “And if I do… I’ll be hunted like a wolf.” The middle-row Baratie exterior establishing shot grounds the renunciation against the restaurant skyline. Page 5 bottom-right panel: Gin grins (GRIN!!) at Sanji as he delivers the captain-doctrine credit-line: “The kid taught me that!! When you really commit yourself… you don’t worry about the enemy or even about your own life.” The grin is the chapter’s emotional peak — a fighter who already accepts his death smiles about it.
- Page 6 — Patty and Carne’s whispered night-raid plot (“If we get about 15 men and attack at night, we just might… If we’re gonna do it, now’s the time, when he’s injured.”). Sanji shouts at them (“GET THE BOAT!!!”) and they comply with a blub blub face-pulled compliance gesture.
- Page 7 — Wide horizon shot of the Krieg-crew supply boat sailing away from the Baratie (ploosh); the Baratie’s fish-shaped exterior in mid-frame. Luffy wakes up panel: WUP!! MY HAT!!! The cut from the renunciation-monologue to the Luffy-awake register signals the chapter’s tonal-shift.
- Page 8 — Luffy in bed, hand bandaged (SHK-SHK); Sanji at the bedside delivers Gin’s message and the fear / hesitations / commit-yourself doctrine: “When I see that boy in action!! That stuff seems foolish… and hesitations… You know, fear…”. Sanji’s Luffy-as-doctrine-source register is on-page.
- Page 9 — Luffy stands at the window, “This is the fighting oceangoing restaurant, Baratie!!” lineup of cooks raising weapons (RAAAR!!) in the background. Sanji’s He hopes to see you on the Grand Line / Not me, you fool!!! / He hopes to see you there? multi-panel exchange — the Grand-Line-as-shared-destination-of-recruits-and-allies register is restated.
- Page 10 — Sanji’s chore-boy-ends-today / staying-as-cook / until-crap-geezer-acknowledges-skills monologue. Note: the I won’t be joining your crew line is delivered with a grin (panel 1 GRIN) — Sanji is not refusing the captain, he is deferring the join. The grin is the chapter’s recruitment-pivot-tell. Final panel: Sanji raises a fist (“Tell your hand to give up too!!!”) — the deflection-via-humor closes the offer-window.
- Page 11 — Luffy’s “Then come with us now!!” + Sanji’s “But someday I will go to the Grand Line” exchange. Bottom-right large panel: Sanji’s eye in close-up (cigarette in teeth) — “Ever hear… …of the All Blue?” The All-Blue-as-recruitment-vector reactivation; the dream that Ch. 56-58 named is now redeployed as the recruitment-axis.
- Page 12 — Zeff overhears: close-up on Zeff’s hand grasping his pipe; small smile under braided mustache (“He still lights up when he talks about it… The fool.”). The mentor’s affection-register is in a single quiet panel — the chapter’s quietest emotional beat.
- Page 13 — Caption-box: “Second floor of Baratie: Employee Dining Room”. The cooks (YAK YAK BLAB BLAB) ringing the bell (KLANG KLANG KLANG); Patty and Carne in the chef-rotation. The chapter’s internal-Baratie-life establishing shot. Final-row: Luffy and Sanji ask “Where are our chairs?”.
- Page 14 — Patty’s “No chairs for you guys” + the cooks’ laughter. Sanji asks “Who made the soup?” — Luffy (mid-mouthful): “Aw, well. It tastes like crap!! I can’t eat it!!”. Patty smirks: “Delicious, huh!? It’s an especially good batch…”.
- Page 15 — Sanji takes a single mouthful (CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP). His commentary: “You have an undiscerning palate” / “I’d stake my reputation on that soup.” Patty: “Human food doesn’t suit you, eh, Crap-Raccoon?”. The hostility-frame escalates. Final panel: Sanji dumps the soup on the floor (PLOP PLOP): “It’s no good! Throw it out!!”.
- Page 16 — Sanji’s full-faced rage close-up: “What’s gotten into you apes!!?” The body-language-flip — Sanji’s typically-tonal-anchor register breaks. Carne (or Patty): “I’m sick of being bullied by you!! You phony sous-chef!! You’re a hack!!”. Luffy in the background, MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH, oblivious. Sanji’s panel-final reaction: “Geezer!!”.
- Page 17 — Zeff arrives (“We can’t serve a mess like this to our customers!!! Hey, who made this crap-awful muck!!?”). Zeff and Sanji confrontation: “How’s your soup different from this one!? Well!?” / “Cut it out, crap-geezer!!!”. Final panel: Zeff’s fist hits Sanji’s face (WHAK!!!) with “Why, you sassy pup!!!”. The Baratie-internal-conflict is now in physical register — chapter ends on a Zeff-Sanji blow. This is the chapter-end recruitment-trigger — the Ch. 68 recruitment-resolution is set up.
- Page 18 (SBS) — One Piece Class Schedule reader-request from Oda; a school-schedule template with the Straw Hats around the border (Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Luffy visible). Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun across the top, “WE ARE PIRATES IN SCHOOL LIFE” down the left side. “From ONE PIECE” down the right side. Class-period numbers down the bottom border. SBS-aside; no on-page foreshadowing content.
Open questions raised
- Will Gin reappear on the Grand Line as a lone-wolf pirate? The chapter installs the paths-will-cross-again commitment but Gin has been narratively retired from the Baratie arc. (Open as of 2026-05-16 — Gin’s post-Baratie status remains unrevealed in later chapters.)
- What is Krieg’s fate? The chapter pivots away from Krieg entirely; his on-page status (defeated by Luffy in Ch. 66) is unresolved at the survivor-level — is Krieg on the supply boat with the rest of his crew, or was he left behind / left at sea?
- When exactly does Zeff release Sanji? Page 10 establishes Sanji’s new condition (chef-acknowledgment); page 17 is a Zeff-Sanji blow. The next chapter’s pivot is the chef-acknowledgment-via-departure-blessing — the recruitment-trigger device is loaded but unfired.
- Will the Mihawk-Zoro reckoning return this arc? The Ch. 50 Mihawk-arrival has been narratively suspended since the Krieg-fight; the Baratie-arc post-Krieg pivot is to Sanji-recruitment, with Mihawk-Zoro deferred.
