A colossal deep-sea monster octopus (a “Kraken”) that haunts the downwelling current on the deep-sea route toward Fish-Man Island. Billed as “the mass-murdering demon of the seas, the chaser of ships, the enemy of man” (Ch. 604 p.17). First shown unnamed at the bottom of the downwelling-current waterfall (Ch. 604 pp.18-19, big-text reveal “THE KRAKEN!!”); the name “Surume” is given later in the arc (@0606). Treated as an individual named legendary creature — a Character note, like Momoo / Laboon — rather than a Races-and-Groups species.

Etymology

Confidence: high · スルメ / 鯣 surume is Japanese for “dried shredded squid,” a common snack — Luffy names the giant cephalopod impulsively after a food (@0606), his stock food-naming register and part of One Piece’s running octopus/squid-as-snack gag (Brook later eyes Surume the way he eyes any octopus — as a meal). The English epithet “Kraken” invokes the Norse-mythology sea monster of gargantuan size said to drag whole sailing vessels under to devour their crews — literalized on-page by Surume snatching and crushing every ship that rides the downwelling current (Ch. 604 pp.18-19).
