Name meaning
Yuba (ユバ) — the most likely referent is **Juba I/II of Numidia** (Berber *Yuba*, Latin *Iuba*), the North-African Berber/Amazigh kings of Numidia (modern Algeria/Tunisia, ~50 BC-25 AD). Juba II famously married Cleopatra Selene II, daughter of Cleopatra VII — a direct Egyptian-royal-line marriage that aligns perfectly with Alabasta's Nefertari (Egyptian-queen) coding. The historical Juba II was a scholar-king who wrote on North-African geography and natural history (oases included). Yuba's narrative role — a small oasis-town at the *crossroads of the western desert* (Ch. 0164 founding) — mirrors the geographic centrality of Juba's Numidian kingdom on Roman-era North African trade routes. Secondary candidate: Japanese *yuba* (湯葉, tofu skin) where 'yu' = hot water (an oasis is a water-source). The Berber-king reading is load-bearing within the Egyptian/North-African Alabasta naming chamber.

Yuba — desert oasis town named on-page in Ch. 158 p. 16 by Vivi as the base of the Alabasta rebel army. Vivi’s stated arc-mission: “So, we’re going to their base and find their leader. It’s an oasis known as Yuba.” / “First of all, we have to stop the rebels… before they bathe this land in blood!!” The town itself is not yet shown on-page as of Ch. 158 — only named as the rebel-base destination. The arc’s first concrete operational objective beyond reach Alabasta: the mission-stack now has two named destinations — Nanohana (port-of-entry, current) → Yuba (rebel base, next).

Etymology

Yuba (ユバ) — possible readings:

  • Japanese yuba (湯葉) = tofu-skin / soy-milk film — a desert-oasis food-name? (Oasis = food-source-of-the-desert; speculative.)
  • Phonetic gesture toward Egyptian Nubia — the ancient kingdom south of Egypt, fitting Alabasta’s Egyptian-coded geographic register.
  • Possibly Yuba (柚葉) = citrus-leaf — fits Oda’s plant-flora geographic encoding for Alabasta (cf. Nanohana = canola flower).

Yuba sandstorms attributed to Crocodile (Ch. 173)

  • The recurring Yuba sandstorms are revealed to be Crocodile’s weather-attack (pp. 8-9). The town’s 3-year drought / oasis-death cycle is engineered, not natural. Toh-Toh’s dig-the-oasis ethic now reframes as an act of resistance against an unseen villain’s weather-attack, not just stubborn nostalgia.

Toh-Toh — Yuba’s lone citizen-loyalist holdout — recognizes Vivi and articulates the King would never betray his people. The chapter-title Yuba, the Town of Rebels operates as title-as-misdirection: the rebellion has been over here for at least a year. Chapter-end cliffhanger: the adult Sand-Sand Band ambushes Vivi at Yuba (pp. 19-20). The Yuba-as-faith-stronghold doctrine is now articulated in Vivi’s own voice during the Luffy-Vivi sand-fight. Pajama-sleepover at Toh-Toh’s inn (pp. 1, 4). Vivi recommits: ‘I’m going to stop the rebellion!’ (p. 3). Toh-Toh: ‘I’ll dig for as long as it takes. Yuba will never surrender to the sands. The king himself entrusted this place to me!!’ (p. 5). Luffy joins the digging and fills in the hole (pp. 5-6); falls asleep (p. 6). Overnight Toh-Toh hits damp sand and extracts a small cup of genuine Yuba water he gifts to Luffy (p. 17). The underground aquifer beneath Yuba is intact — the drought is artificial.   • Ch. 164 — First on-page Yuba founding-compact. Childhood Koza (p. 15) explains to Vivi: “Right now, it’s an uninhabited oasis. Your father asked my father to build a city there!! …It’s the crossroads of Alabasta’s western desert!!” — accompanied by a stylized map-panel with YUBA at the centre and four arrows radiating to other Alabasta nodes. Cobra’s handshake-compact with Toh-Toh (pp. 15-16): “I am counting on you, Toh-Toh.” / “Yes, my king. I will build a magnificent city for you.” The kingdom’s western-desert hub-city is Cobra’s project; Toh-Toh is the city-as-public-trust founder. Vivi sees Toh-Toh off at the city gates (p. 17). Ch. 0179 — Yuba destroyed; Toh-Toh dies

  • Yuba destroyed on-page by Crocodile-engineered sandstorm (Ch. 179 pp. 6-9). The town’s last citizen, Toh-Toh, dies on-page. The Ch. 0165 aquifer-intact proof is buried alongside him. Yuba is structurally destroyed as an inhabited place.

Ch. 180 — Yuba storm-buried wide-shot; Toh-Toh storm-defiance full-page

Ch. 180 pp. 2, 10 — First on-page Yuba-buried-under-storm wide-shot. After Toh-Toh’s full-page YOU’LL NEVER DEFEAT YUBA!! / DO YOUR WORST, YOU BLASTED SANDSTORM!! rage-shout (p. 10), the chapter cuts to a BOOM… wide-shot of the desolate buried town. Yuba is now at its lowest visible state in the saga — the city-founder’s defiance is on-page at the moment the city physically disappears under the sandstorm. The storm is artificial (Crocodile-engineered Dance Powder, forward-canon); Toh-Toh’s defiance is structurally vindicated.
