What we know
Ch. 117 extensions to the race profile:
- Cultural-doctrine extension (Ch. 117 p.15 — Dorry): ‘because our lives are longer than yours… our desire to die with honor is greater, too. Material things, even life… all fade in the end. And that honor… will be the eternal treasure of our homeland. But as warriors of Elbaph… if we can die with honor, our deaths can be glorious.’ The 3x-human-lifespan canonization is now operationally linked to the die-with-honor doctrine — long lifespan amplifies the cultural importance of how one dies.
- Warrior-flag visual register (Ch. 117 p.8 — Vivi interpreting): ‘each of them has a flag on his chest that says “WARRIOR” — those flags mean more to them than their very lives.’ Giants of Elbaf wear distinctive WARRIOR-flag chest-tags as identifier-tells. The flag is a non-negotiable identifier — its removal is socially-equivalent to death.
- Centuries-long-duel-tally canonized (Ch. 117 p.11): 73,466 battles / 73,466 draws across the Hundred-Year-Duel. Mathematical implication: ~735 duel-rounds per year on average — a duel-frequency that is temporally compatible with a 3x-human-lifespan but morally enormous under the die-with-honor doctrine.
First on-page biological canonization of the Giants race (Ch. 116 p.16). Dorry: ‘Our life spans are three times those of humans. Aw, that’s nothing.’
- Lifespan: ~3x human (if humans live ~80 years, giants live ~240+). A 100-year duel is under half of a giant’s lifetime — temporally trivial.
- Phenotype (from Dorry/Brogy Ch. 116 p.4, p.10): viking-warrior — horned helmet, full beard, fur-trimmed cape, bare-chested or leather-strapped, massive weapons (axe, club, sword), tree-canopy-height physically.
- Combat tier: A single Brogy axe-blow one-shots a T-rex (Ch. 116 p.6); Dorry’s sword cuts another T-rex in half from above-frame (Ch. 116 p.9-10). Giants are on a different combat-tier from ordinary humans.
- Cultural register: Loud (signature laughs — Brogy’s HEE HEE HEE / HO HO HO, Dorry’s HO HO HO HO), hospitable (instant-feast invitation, Ch. 116 p.7), warrior-ethos-bound (the duel-of-honor doctrine, p.15-17).
- Sociology (Ch. 116 p.11): Giants are known of in the world — Nami: ‘I’ve heard of them, but… I never saw one before.’ They exist in world-knowledge but are geographically segregated from the East Blue / common-Grand-Line populations.
- Origin: All known giants come from Elbaf (Dorry Ch. 116 p.14: ‘I’m from Elbaph, a village of warriors.’).

SBS canon — Vol. 19 (Ch. 168)
Math implication
A modern giant who lived through the Void Century would need to be ~900+ years old at the present-day-of-the-narrative — but giants who knew giants who lived through the Void Century (the 2-3-generation chain of long-memory transmission) would be alive today. This is the biological precondition for giants being witnesses-to-the-Void-Century events via oral tradition.
Open questions about this topic
- Do all giants come from Elbaf, or is Elbaf a village within a larger Giant geography?
- Are there sub-races / phenotype-variants beyond the viking-warrior register?
- Joy Boy Identity — the giants-as-long-memory-keepers register pays off when giants are revealed as witnesses-to-the-Void-Century events (Elbaf saga, Ch. 1130+).
