- Firsts
- **Mr. 3 alive — survived Bananagator swallowing by self-encasing in a Wax-Wax Ball** (pp. 2-3). The first-bananagator (Ch. 0173-0175) that swallowed the cage-key also swallowed Mr. 3. When the Strawhats free the gator (*SPLOOSH!!*, p. 2; *THAR SHE BLOWS!!!*, p. 2), a giant white wax-ball is regurgitated alongside the key. Mr. 3 cracks out (*KR-AK!*, p. 3 — *Wax-Wax Ball... KRiAK!*): *'The moment this monster swallowed me, I used every last ounce of my power... to form a Wax-Wax Ball by sealing myself inside. I managed to survive.'* / *'Hee hee hee! Crocodile thinks he got rid of me, but he underestimated me!!'*. **First on-page Doru Doru no Mi *defensive self-encasement* application** (prior on-page uses were all offensive wax-arsenal). Pays off the Ch. 0175 Crocodile-said-he-killed-Mr.-3 implication-of-death (Crocodile fed Mr.3 to the gator off-page).
- **Mr. 3 forced to make a duplicate Rain Dinners cage-key out of wax** (pp. 4-5). With the Strawhats holding the gator's swallowed key (which Crocodile reveals in Ch. 0175 is **not** the real key), Sanji compels Mr. 3 to wax-duplicate it: *'Maybe we can use his Wax-Wax powers... to make a duplicate key!'* (p. 5). Mr. 3 is **forced-ally to the Strawhats** under threat (*'Okay, Mr. 3, be a good boy and hand over the key.'* / *'I see what's going on here...'* / *'Here you go!!'* / *'A steel cage... and a key!! Aha!!'* / *'A room filling up with water...'*). Sanji's instruction: *'If you want the key, go find it!!'* — Mr. 3 is **kicked out to find/duplicate** under Sanji's threat-grammar. **First on-page Strawhat-conscripts-defeated-villain-as-temporary-asset beat** — pre-loads the Mr. Prince persona's improvisational-alliance register.
- **Sanji wax-blows the cage wall open** (pp. 6-7). Cage architecture is breached from the inside-via-wax-bomb: *KREEK... / CHAK....!!! / OOF!!!! / KRASH!!!* — Sanji exits the cage with the rescued Strawhats. The Ch. 0170 *the cage is impenetrable from inside* premise is broken via Mr. 3's wax-conscription. First on-page Strawhat-cage-escape at the Crocodile-tier.
- **Mr. 3 escapes during the cage-break — Strawhats and Mr. 3 part ways** (p. 7). After the cage-break Mr. 3 flees off-frame. Sanji deadpans: *'He sure catches on fast!!'* / *'What a jerk.'*. **The Strawhat-Mr.3-forced-alliance ends mid-escape** — Mr. 3 is now a loose-end roaming Alabasta (forward-canon: he returns at Ch. 0211 Drum-aftermath sequence).
- **Bananagator gauntlet at Rain Dinners** (p. 6). Vivi: *'But it's crawling with Bananagators!!!'* / Zoro: *'It's okay. Those two aren't normal!!'* / Nami: *'And I couldn't even handle one of them...'*. The Strawhats' Ch. 0173 bananagator-gauntlet recurs in retreat — but Luffy and Zoro one-shot them (*DA-DOOM!!! / RAAAAAAA / C'mon!!! Aren't there any more?!*). First on-page bananagator-mass-defeat beat.
- **Usopp hits his head on a rock as the cage-room floods** (p. 7) — *PLOSH! / KREK! / The wall broke!!! / Let's get out of here!!! / WOOOO BLOOSH... / WAAH!!! / Blast it!!! / AAAAAAH!! / USOPP HIT HIS HEAD ON A ROCK!!!*. Comic-grammar cage-escape beat — Usopp-as-injury-target preserved across the Crocodile-tier set-piece.
- **Zoro saves Smoker from drowning** (pp. 8-10). Outside Rain Dinners (sand at the casino-perimeter), Zoro pulls a soaking-wet Smoker (Sea-Stone-cuff-handcuffed from Ch. 0175 Crocodile-attack) out of the floodwater: *'You alive, Luffy?'* / *'SF-LASH!'* (Zoro drops Smoker to the sand) / *'Sheesh! People with Devil Fruit powers sure have some rotten weaknesses.'*. Strawhats react in shock (*'WHOA!! SMOKER!! / WHY DID YOU SAVE HIM, ZOLO?!'*); Vivi: *'He'll sink like an anchor!!'* / Luffy: *'I know, but...'* / Sanji: *'Huh?! He's the enemy. Leave him.'* / Luffy: *'ZOLO!! SAVE HIM!!'*. **First on-page Strawhat-saves-Marine beat — and a Logia-Marine at that.** Pre-loads the Strawhat-Smoker arc-long uneasy-alliance-grammar — Zoro acts on Luffy's order, but the doctrine is enforced even when the rescued enemy will resume hostilities.
- **Zoro: *I'd have let you drown*** (p. 10) — Zoro (to Smoker, eyes-down): *'I'd have let you drown.'* / *'You don't owe me anything. It was captain's orders.'*. **First on-page Zoro-articulates-his-personal-doctrine-vs-captain's-orders split** at the Logia-Marine tier. Zoro frames the rescue as **captain's-order obedience**, not personal mercy — the *I'd have let you drown* line **detoxifies the debt** from Smoker's perspective: no debt is owed because no mercy was extended.
- **Smoker: *I'll let you get away. Just this once...*** (pp. 12-13). Standoff: Smoker (handcuffed, soaking) faces the assembled Strawhats: *'...I'll let you get away. Just this once...'* / *'...But next time we meet, Straw Hat...'* / *'...you're dead meat.'*. **First on-page Marine-officer-explicitly-codes-a-personal-debt-favor toward the Strawhats.** Pre-loads the forward-canon Smoker-as-honorable-pursuer doctrine. The *just this once* qualifier preserves the chase-grammar — Smoker's pursuit thesis (Ch. 0099 *White Chase*) is suspended for one beat as a debt-of-life acknowledgment, then re-engages immediately.
- **Tashigi defies the Marine brass to chase the Strawhats** (pp. 14-15). After Smoker stops the pursuit (*'I'm too tired'*), Tashigi takes operational command: *'But, sir, do you think the brass will do that just to catch a few lousy pirates? You're calling for reinforcements?'* / Smoker (eyes-narrowed): *'Do you think I care what the brass thinks?!'* / Tashigi: *'N-no, sir!!'* / *'I'll get right on it, sir!'* / *'Have every ship in the region set sail for Alabasta. And contact HQ. Recall our men. We'll catch up with those pirates later.'*. **First on-page Smoker-overrides-brass beat** + **Tashigi-as-comm-relay-officer install**. Pre-loads the forward-canon Smoker-vs-the-WG (his bridge with Vegapunk / disobedience-against-Cipher-Pol register that recurs from Loguetown through G-5 / Punk Hazard).
- **Nami's *Nanohana perfume* is still in her possession** (p. 10). After cage-escape: Zoro: *'We lost a lot of time. Can we still make it, Vivi?'* / Vivi: *'I don't know.'* / Nami: *'Nami, do you still have that perfume you bought in Nanohana?'* / *'Yes. Why?'* / *'Put it on!!'*. Cosmetic-prop set-up — perfume-as-tracker. **First on-page Strawhat-uses-cosmetic-as-search-beacon technique** — the Nanohana market perfume purchase from Ch. 0157 cashes into a load-bearing reunion-mechanic. Sanji: *'Ahh... it's like falling in love and going to heaven.'* — Sanji's hyper-olfactory tell installs him as **the chapter's reunion-mechanic operational asset**.
- **Eyelashes summons a friend — a giant *Crab Mover*** (pp. 16-18). The Strawhats need fast transport to Alubarna; Eyelashes (Vivi's camel-mount) leads them to a giant crab. Chopper: *'It's... a CRAB MOVER!!!'* / *'Looks tasty!!!'*. Caption: *'Excellent!! Crab Movers bury themselves in the sand, so they're rarely seen!!'* (p. 17). Vivi: *'He's Eyelashes' friend!! / This is Eyelashes' hometown! He has lots of friends around here!!'*. Chopper: *'But what's with the creepy leer?!'* / Sanji: *'That's one awesome ride.'*. **First on-page Crab-Mover-as-desert-transit-animal beat** — sand-burrow-capable apex-pace mount. Eyelashes' *hometown-network* canonized — Vivi's animal-companion-Rolodex of Alabasta-endemic mounts is a load-bearing logistic-asset for the rebellion-side.

Summary
Cover-art (p. 1): solo title-splash of Mr. 4 in his wide-brim hat and X-mark coat, carrying two feed-pails amid sheep/goats — pastoral-shepherd composition.
In-story (pp. 2-7): the Strawhats free the swallowed cage-key from the Bananagator (SPLOOSH!!! / THAR SHE BLOWS!!!) — and along with it, a giant white wax-ball. Mr. 3 cracks himself out (KR-AK!): he survived being eaten by the gator by self-encasing in a Wax-Wax Ball (“The moment this monster swallowed me, I used every last ounce of my power…” / “Crocodile thinks he got rid of me, but he underestimated me!!”). The key turns out to be stuck to Mr. 3’s wax-ball — Sanji conscripts Mr. 3 to wax-duplicate the key (“Maybe we can use his Wax-Wax powers… to make a duplicate key!”). Mr. 3 figures out the trap (“A steel cage… a room filling up with water…”) and forges a key — Sanji boots him out to deliver it (“If you want the key, go find it!!” — Mr. 3 escapes off-frame mid-rescue, “He sure catches on fast!! What a jerk.”). Sanji wax-bombs the cage wall open from outside (KRASH!!!); the cage is breached; the Strawhats escape as Rain Dinners floods (WOOOO BLOOSH… USOPP HIT HIS HEAD ON A ROCK!!!). Luffy/Zoro one-shot the two remaining Bananagator guards (DA-DOOM!!! / RAAA); Vivi: “But it’s crawling with Bananagators!!!” / Zoro: “Those two aren’t normal!!”.
Outside Rain Dinners (pp. 8-13): Zoro pulls Smoker (Sea-Stone-cuffed from Ch. 0175 Crocodile-trap) out of the floodwater (SF-LASH!) — “Sheesh! People with Devil Fruit powers sure have some rotten weaknesses.”. The Strawhats are stunned (“WHY DID YOU SAVE HIM, ZOLO?!”); Zoro re-frames it: “I’d have let you drown. You don’t owe me anything. It was captain’s orders.” — a debt-detoxifier. Smoker stands soaking-wet at the Strawhats: ”…I’ll let you get away. Just this once… But next time we meet, Straw Hat… you’re dead meat.” First on-page Marine-officer-grants-personal-debt-favor to the Strawhats. Tashigi (still holding Zoro’s Wado Ichimonji from Ch. 0173): “Why did you save me?” — a chapter-internal echo. Tashigi attempts to chase the Strawhats but Smoker stops her (“No… I’m too tired.” — internal cover for the debt-favor); Tashigi takes operational command — “Have every ship in the region set sail for Alabasta. And contact HQ.” — and challenges the brass: “…do you think the brass will do that just to catch a few lousy pirates?” / Smoker: “Do you think I care what the brass thinks?!”. First on-page Smoker-overrides-brass beat — pre-loads the forward-canon Smoker-vs-WG defiance-grammar.
The Strawhats sprint through Rainbase (pp. 14-17): need fast transport to Alubarna (Nami: “There aren’t there stables in Rainbase?! Let’s grab some horses!!”); Nami sprays the Nanohana-purchase perfume on herself (“Put it on!!”) — Sanji rapturously sniffs it (“…like falling in love and going to heaven.”) as a reunion-mechanic beacon. Eyelashes (Vivi’s camel) summons a friend — a giant Crab Mover (a sand-burrowing desert-transit crab). Chopper rides it (“GIDDYUP!!!”). At chapter’s end (p. 18), Chopper spots a figure ahead — “VIVI!!!” — but it’s Mr. 2 Bon Clay impersonating Vivi via the Mane Mane no Mi (“STOP IT, CHOPPER!!! / IT’S HIM!!!”). TO BE CONTINUED IN ONE PIECE, VOL. 20!
Volume bonus (pp. 20-21): full Alabasta Kingdom desert-trek strategic map with vignettes of Crocodile-mastermind, Smoker-Redux, Toh-Toh, the Alabastan Drought, Ace munching, and a five-headshot Baroque Works Agents roster panel (Mr.1, Ms. Doublefinger, Mr.2 Bon Clay, Mr.4, Ms. Merry Christmas).

Open questions raised
- Why was Mr. 3 in the bananagator? Implication: Crocodile fed him to the gator off-page after Mr. 3’s officer-failure at Little Garden + recapture sequence. The exact when of Mr. 3’s recapture by Crocodile is not narrated in-story.
- What happens to Mr. 3 now? He escapes off-frame mid-cage-break. Forward-canon: he resurfaces with Buggy at Impel Down (Ch. 0532+) — multi-arc deferred-asset register.
- Will Smoker honor the just this once favor in future chapters? The next time we meet, you’re dead meat qualifier sets up a Loguetown-style re-engagement clock.
- What does Smoker mean by Do you think I care what the brass thinks?! — the brass-defiance line raises the structural question of Smoker’s loyalty-to-the-WG vs his loyalty-to-his-own-pursuit-doctrine. Forward-canon: this is the first on-page seed for the Smoker-vs-Cipher-Pol / Smoker-vs-Akainu / Smoker-Vegapunk-bridge sub-plots.
- Is the Crab Mover Eyelashes’ permanent ally, or a one-chapter cameo? Forward-canon: one-chapter cameo — but the Eyelashes-has-a-network-of-Alabasta-animal-friends mechanic recurs at Alubarna (Super-Spot-Billed-Duck-Squadron via similar Vivi-summons-the-network grammar).
- What is the actual Vivi-real-vs-fake recognition criterion? The cliffhanger is the deception-set-up; the X-mark-on-arm criterion is forward-canon (~Ch. 178+).
- Who is Ms. Doublefinger and what is her devil fruit? First visual debut (Vol-bonus roster only — name + face); zero on-page combat data. Forward-canon: Toge Toge no Mi spike-fruit, Mr.1’s Officer-Agent partner.
- Who is Ms. Merry Christmas, who looks elderly with veil? First visual debut (Vol-bonus roster only — name + face); zero combat data. Forward-canon: Mole-Mole no Mi burrowing-fruit, Mr.4’s partner.
