Chapter 1065: Six Vegapunks

Summary

The Straw Hats arrive at the government-funded research island Egghead (“the Future Island”), ferried by a furious Caribou who insists he never agreed to land on a Marine-allied island. Inside Dr. Vegapunk’s lab, the crew discovers the island is powered by fire and meets a parade of bizarre “Vegapunks” — the woman Lilith, the bulb-headed thinker Edison, the spherical data-analyst Pythagoras, and the gluttonous York — each a separate satellite body of the one Vegapunk. A child-sized but huge winged figure resembling Jinbei attacks: it is S-Shark, a Seraphim — a next-generation Pacifista clone-weapon that uses Fish-Man Karate and fires lasers. After the crew fends it off, the lead satellite Shaka (“Vegapunk #01, the Good”) pins them with magnetic “Dom shoes,” distrustful of pirates. Exploring, Luffy, Chopper and Franky marvel at the futuristic tech — only for Shaka to drop the chapter’s bombshell: this isn’t the future, it’s the past. A civilization just as advanced as Egghead existed 900 years ago, and its proof — a colossal ancient iron robot — lies buried in Vegapunk’s scrap pile.

• Egghead is “the Future Island,” Vegapunk’s government-funded lab island; its sub-area shown is the labo-phase. Its power source is fire — Vegapunk has “long researched what can be burned for energy,” dreaming of “an undying flame” to “create our own sun.” (p.3-4)
• “Six Vegapunks”: the one Dr. Vegapunk operates through six satellite bodies, each embodying an aspect and wearing a numbered “VEGAPUNK”/“PUNK” badge:
