Sandora Desert
- Name
- サンドラ砂漠 (Sandora Sabaku)
- Sea
- Grand Line
- Region
- Alabasta
- First seen
- Ch. 162
- Name meaning
- Sandora (サンドラ) — direct portmanteau of English **'sand'** + the Egyptian Nile-name register: most plausibly **Sand + Sahara** (the desert) or **Sand + (Pan)dora**. The Egyptian-coded Alabasta kingdom maps the Sandora River to the **Nile** (it nourishes the kingdom historically, is being salt-tainted by the sea — direct Nile-Delta-salination parallel). 'Sandora' = the sandy Nile / the sand-river. The 'sand-' opening is overt; the '-dora' tail evokes both *Sahara* and *Pandora* (the latter's box-of-evils register fitting Crocodile's deliberate poisoning of the river).
Alabasta · the vast desert covering most of the kingdom · ‘ancient’ per Vivi (Ch. 162 p. 4) · dunes up to 1000 feet high · home of the Sandora dragon, the Evil Herons, and the Sandora River system
Profile
The Sandora is the great desert of the Alabasta kingdom. Vivi canonizes it as ancient (Ch. 162 p. 4: ‘This is an ancient desert.’) — pre-loading forward-canon Void-Century-substrate framing. Dunes reach over 1000 feet high (Ch. 162 p. 4); day-time heat alternates with below-freezing night-time temperatures (p. 19). The desert is crossed by the Sandora River (implied via the Sandora dragon naming, pp. 11-13) and dotted with oasis-towns including Yuba (named on p. 5). It is patrolled by giant lizard-form Sandora dragons (Sea-King-tier desert-apex predators), the con-artist Evil Herons (desert-pirate-birds), and tame camels like Eyelashes.
Etymology
Sandora — Japanese transliteration likely a portmanteau of sand + Latinate suffix (cf. the Sandora River). The desert and river share the name, naming the geological basin as a whole.
