Summary

The chapter opens with the cover-story splash (p. 1): Django’s Dance Paradise, Vol. 6: A Fateful Passing — Django bound to a barber-pole-striped mast on a small sailboat, drifting past a Marine-flagged ship while a heart-sunglasses figure watches. Sixth installment of the Django spinoff cover-arc.

The story proper opens aboard the Going Merry with Nami gravely ill — feverish, bedridden under blankets, attended by Vivi. The crew brainstorms in escalating panic (p. 2): “Won’t that cool her down?” / “What if we throw some water on her?” — Vivi recoils (“Are you crazy!!?”) and one of them is smacked for the suggestion (THWAK!!). Nami’s fever is serious enough that she cannot navigate: “Without Nami to navigate, we can’t sail at night. … I know. We have to drop anchor somewhere.” / “This is bad. The sun’s going down, Vivi.” The crew anchors for the night (pp. 2-3); Nami sleeps fitfully (WEEZ, ZZZ, thermometer TIK TIK) while the others snore.

Daybreak. The crew passes the wreckage of a vessel crewed by two distraught Drum subjects (pp. 4-5) — forward-canon: Chess and Kuromarimo, retainers of Drum Island’s king. They wail: “This is terrible!! Captain Wapol’s been hurled into space!!!” / “It’s a catastrophe!! Captain Wapol can’t swim!!!” / “…we gotta rescue him!!!”. Nearby, two enraged men scream after a departing ship — “Remember us!!! We’ll get you for this!!! Just you wait!!! You remember this!!!” — but their voices fade into the falling snow. First on-page mention of Wapol: the king of Drum Island, a non-swimmer (Devil-Fruit tell), hurled into space by some unidentified party. Sanji shrugs them off: “Who cares? Forget about them. They’re just a bunch of idiots… nothing to worry about.” (p. 5).

Vivi delivers the chapter’s centerpiece — a Grand Line climate lecture (pp. 6-7). The crew has noticed the weather is “unusually stable lately. Stable but cold.” — Vivi reads it as a winter-island signature and explains: “Climatically, the islands of the Grand Line can be divided up into four types— summer islands, spring islands, autumn islands and winter islands. And each of these islands generally has four seasons.” A winter island stays in winter-baseline but still cycles four sub-seasons; sailing a four-island cluster therefore passes through 16 seasons total. “It’s no wonder the seas between them are so turbulent.” The takeaway navigation doctrine: “Stable weather means there’s an island nearby!” The Strawhats give the chapter its title in their call-and-response — “I see…” / “You’re right!” / “I see it!!” — and Sanji’s lookout pays off: “TA-DAH!! AN ISLAND!!!” (p. 8).

Luffy erupts into adventure-glee — “AN ISLAND!!! WAAH!!!” (pp. 8-9) — and Sanji immediately polices the mode: “Just remember, Luffy!! We’re not here for an adventure this time. We’re going to find a doctor for Nami, then we’re leaving immediately.” (p. 9). The island is white with snow — a snow island (p. 9). Usopp’s “don’t-go-on-the-island disease” flares comically; Luffy ignores all caution (“Snow is great…” — “It’s no use. He’s not listening.”).

The Going Merry approaches the island (pp. 10-11): an enormous ring of drum-shaped mountains — towering cylindrical peaks with flat, snow-dusted caps — surrounds a forested basin (DOOM!! WOOO). The temperature is “only 14 degrees out. That’s the temperature at which bears get ready to hibernate.” Luffy, in his usual sleeveless vest, is told off for being underdressed (“You just noticed!!?”). The crew finds a docking point — “It’s a waterfall of melting snow. I think we can dock our ship here.” — and debates who goes to find a doctor (everyone volunteers; pp. 11-12).

As the Going Merry docks, a long line of heavily-bundled islanders appears along the snowfield ridges, rifles ready (pp. 12-13): “Stop right there… you pirates. Turn your vessel around… and leave. Now!” The crew protests — “We have a sick person aboard!! We came here to find a doctor!!” — but the islanders refuse, openly hostile: “This is our country!! We’ll let no pirate set foot here!!! …Or we’ll blast your ship from the water!!!” (p. 13). They open fire (BOOM!!, p. 14) — a shot grazes the deck near Vivi.

Luffy, enraged that they fired on the ship and nearly hit Vivi, prepares to charge — “How dare you!?” / “YOU JERKS!!!” (pp. 14-15). The islanders take aim again (KLAK KLAK!!!, “TAKE AIM!!!”, p. 16). The crew de-escalates instead — “Stop!!! We can’t fight them!!” — and pleads from the deck: “Our navigator is very sick. Please help us!! …But can you send us a doctor!? We won’t set foot on your island!!” The islanders relent: “All right.” (p. 15) — they will send a doctor down rather than admit the pirates.

In the aftermath (pp. 16-17), Vivi rebukes Luffy with the sharpest captaincy-criticism he has yet taken from outside the crew: “Impulsiveness doesn’t solve anything!! Luffy, you’re a failure as a captain. …What will happen to Nami? If you get us all killed…” Luffy — uncharacteristically — concedes at once: “You’re right. Forgive me! I was wrong!!!” (p. 17). The chapter closes on Luffy accepting the mission’s stakes over his fight-instinct.

Page 18 — Volume 15 SBS Question Corner back-matter: the SBS = “Terribly Stupid Section” acronym gag, a saxophone-embouchure complaint aimed at Mr. 8, and a reader question asking the bounties of Gold Roger and Red-Haired Shanks — which Oda dodges with the Oda Flying Cross Chop!!! gag.

Open questions raised

• Who hurled Wapol into space, and why? The Drum retainers’ panic and the departing-ship taunts (“Remember us!!!”) imply a raid that displaced King Wapol. Named only as a recent event (“those guys yesterday”); the attacker is not shown. Forward-canon: Wapol was driven off Drum Island by Blackbeard’s crew. The chapter sets up Wapol’s eventual return as the arc’s antagonist.
• Is there a doctor on Drum Island at all? The crew’s entire mission rests on it; the islanders agree to “send a doctor” but only on the condition the pirates stay off the island. Forward-canon: the only doctor on the island is Dr. Kureha, on the mountain — the conditional-aid concession will be subverted.
• Why are the Drum Islanders so afraid of and hostile to pirates? They fire on a ship carrying an openly-stated sick crewmate. The chapter establishes the hostility without explaining its cause. Forward-canon: the trauma traces to Wapol’s tyranny and a recent pirate raid.
• What is Nami’s illness? Established as a worsening fever serious enough to incapacitate her as navigator; un-diagnosed on-page. Forward-canon: a deadly tick-borne disease (five-day-island fever / kestia), diagnosed by Dr. Kureha.
