Summary

The opening chapter of the Jaya arc / Sky Island Saga. A new salvage crew is introduced: their boss is Masira, a huge monkey-faced man in a diving helmet (the headphone earpiece reads “MASIRA”), who leads a hyperactive crew of helmeted divers hauling treasure off the seafloor. Masira’s men work atop a sunken wreck; meanwhile a separate group of helmet-wearing “underwater crew” — actually Luffy, Zoro, Nami, and Sanji — are exploring the same wreck below, marveling at it (“This is no ordinary prow,” “Beware of the mysterious enemy below!!”), with Luffy poking at clocks, fish-shaped clutter, a treasure chest, and a robed corpse-like figure among the debris (pp. 2-7). Masira’s crew rigs the wreck with a “Cradle Set,” engages the Barco Grabber (a giant tong/clamp lowered on cables), links it to the hull, and then Masira personally inflates the sunken ship with his own breath to float it to the surface — “No way, he’s going to raise the wreck… with his breath?!” (pp. 8-13). As the ship rises, a giant eel-like sea creature lunges at the underwater Straw Hats; Masira dives down and drives it off with a “Monkey Punch” (pp. 15-16). The salvaged ship surfaces; Masira boards it and confronts the four interlopers — “Who are you?! How dare you invade my territory!!” The standoff defuses into comedy: Luffy calls him “a monkey,” Masira (vain) preens (“You think I’m hunky?”), and the two bond over Masira being flattered to be called a monkey and over Luffy being “from the East Blue” — “Really? You’re from the East Blue?!” (pp. 17-19). The final panel is a cliffhanger: a giant sea turtle clamps down (“CHOMP!”) on the raised ship from below. Nami and Robin are referenced as being elsewhere/not responding to radio calls (p. 17).
