Chapter 439: Walk More Slowly

Summary

The Straw Hats flee Water Seven aboard their new, still-unnamed ship while Garp’s battleship shells them and the citizens cheer them off as heroes. After a running argument over Franky’s terrible name suggestions (“Tiger Wolf Lion!”), the crew settles on the name Thousand Sunny — “Thousand” from the idea of sailing the thousand seas, the “Sunny” coined by Iceberg. Garp fires a giant iron cannonball; Franky counters by firing the Sunny’s secret weapon, the Coup de Burst, launching the entire ship a kilometer through the air to escape. Garp (“Not bad… that’s my grandson!”) confirms they got away. Around Water Seven, the two Enies Lobby giants (Oimo & Kashii) now help rebuild the city and vow to one day reach Elbaf for the “King of Snipers”; Iceberg offers the Franky Family steady work at Galley-La. On a Grand Line island, Smoker and Tashigi see the Straw Hats’ new bounties and Smoker pledges to chase them into the New World and crush them. In Alabasta, Vivi and her retainers spot Nico Robin among Luffy’s crew on the wanted posters; a tearful Vivi declares she trusts Luffy completely — “He will become the King of the Pirates.” The crew throws a welcome party and sets course for Fish-Man Island.

• The new ship is christened Thousand Sunny — the figurehead is a lion (“nice sun”/“nice sunflower” debate); “Sunny” is Iceberg’s coinage (pp. 5-7).
• The Sunny is built from Adam Wood (“the Adam”) — Franky cites “the durability of the Adam Wood” as part of its emergency-acceleration system (pp. 9, 13).
