Ch. 214 p. 14 —
The X-mark farewell rendezvous is set (East Port, 12 noon tomorrow; 12-hour clock)
On the Sandora-River strategy call the crew gives Vivi the farewell terms: a brief, no-anchor stop at the East Port at exactly 12 noon tomorrow, with 12 hours to decide. Nami: “That will be your one and only chance!! If you’re there, we’ll welcome you as a fellow pirate!!” The logistics of the iconic X-mark left-arm farewell-oath (~Ch. 216) are installed here — the rendezvous-time and the “welcome you as a fellow pirate” framing are the structural setup for the oath-scene where the crew (and Vivi at distance) raise X-marked left arms. The Ch. 0157 fellowship-sign’s emotional-emblem payoff is now one chapter away.
Ch. 182 pp. 18-19 —
Anti-Mane-Mane fellowship-test cashes operationally — Vivi detects Bon-Clay-as-Usopp via missing armband
Vivi (suspecting the Usopp who offered her a ride is Bon Clay, downward glance at the rider’s arm): “HOW DO I KNOW YOU’RE REALLY USOPP?!” + interior monologue: “MR. ZERO HAD SAID THEY WERE ALL WEARING A BAND ON THEIR ARMS.” Bon Clay forgot to wear an armband despite Crocodile’s briefing. First on-page operational cash of the Ch. 0157 X-mark/left-arm fellowship-sign as a working anti-Mane-Mane detection-mechanism. The fellowship-test that Vivi proposed (Ch. 157) and that Luffy named the sign of our fellowship (Ch. 157) is here vindicated as a real Mane-Mane counter — exactly as Zoro’s “This enemy has too many secrets” tactical-register predicted. The longer-burn emotional-emblem-payoff (Vivi farewell oath, ~Ch. 216) remains forward-canon, but the tactical-payoff at the armband-detection tier is on-page in Ch. 0182.
Ch. 181 p. 16 — Chopper wears the X-mark on his hat-band during the decoy-cape reveal
In the Alubarna colonnade reveal (p. 16), Chopper’s hat-band visibly bears the X-mark (the Ch. 157 fellowship-sign install). The operational counter-tell to the Mane Mane no Mi is visible in the decoy-reveal panel — the Strawhats’ X-mark distinguishes them from any Bon-Clay-impersonations.
Ch. 157 pp. 9-11 —
LOAD-BEARING — X-mark / left-arm fellowship-sign installed
As an operational countermeasure to the Clone-Clone Fruit (Mane Mane no Mi) user, Vivi proposes the crew wrap their left arms in bandages and mark them with an X . “With these on, we’ll be able to tell who’s who.” Luffy, fist-bumping in formation: “Right! No matter what happens from here on out… our left arms will bear… the sign of our fellowship!” The crew bumps X-marked left fists in a circular composition (p. 10 splash). Every Strawhat present — Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Vivi, Chopper — is X-marked on the left arm. Zoro frames the tactical register: “Tie them on tight. This enemy has too many secrets.”
The payoff
Ch. 216 pp. 17-19 —
The farewell-oath payoff lands — entire crew + Vivi raise X-marked left arms in silent salute
At Vivi’s departure from East Port Tamarisk, the crew cannot openly acknowledge her (the Navy is watching; an open farewell would brand her a pirate-collaborator). Instead Luffy, Nami, Sanji, then Zoro, Chopper, Usopp raise their X-marked left arms toward the cliff; Vivi raises hers in answer, weeping. Luffy: “No matter what happens from here on, our left arms will bear… the sign of our fellowship.” The Ch. 0157 sign of our fellowship install completes its full emotional-emblem payoff — one of the most iconic single-symbol payoffs in the Alabasta corridor.

Why this matters
The X-mark is introduced as a tactical countermeasure but the chapter’s emotional register elevates it to a fellowship-emblem . The X-shape and the left-arm placement are both load-bearing in forward-canon — they recur at the arc’s emotional climax as an unbreakable oath-symbol when the crew and Vivi part ways. The X-on-left-arm is one of Oda’s clearest examples of chekhov-explicit + wardrobe-foreshadow combined : the chapter tells you the X is the sign of our fellowship AND immediately renders it as a wardrobe-element on every crew-member.
Pre-loads the later left-arm Strawhat-brand symbology generally (cf. Nami’s tangerine tattoo on the left arm, Robin’s eventual left-arm clover, Marine Mark-of-Brotherhood etc.). Also operationally counters the Mane Mane no Mi: the only thing the user cannot duplicate is an arbitrary fresh visual mark applied after their last touch-copy.

back-shot raised-arm silhouette splash , not a face-forward goodbye
The farewell-oath is composed as a wordless back-shot : the crew face away from the reader toward Vivi’s cliff, each raising one X-marked left arm straight up into a near-empty sky (p. 18 — Luffy, Nami, Sanji; p. 19 — Zoro, Chopper, Usopp). The load-bearing visual element is the X-marked forearm in raised silhouette against negative space — the mark reads even where the figures are rendered as solid black shapes (Sanji is a full silhouette with only the cigarette-smoke and the X visible; Zoro is half in shadow). The composition deliberately withholds the characters’ faces and lets the raised X-arm carry the entire emotional load — the prop-tell from Ch. 157 is elevated to a silhouette-grammar element here.
This pairs the X-mark with Luffy Arms-Raised Joy Pose ’s arms-up-V family: the farewell salute is the same arms-raised body-shape, but inverted in register — parting rather than joy/declaration , and back-to-camera-wordless rather than face-forward-shouting . The X-mark is what re-keys the shared arms-raised silhouette from “freedom” to “fellowship-oath.” When you see a Strawhat raised-arm silhouette with the X visible and faces withheld, the Ch. 157 → Ch. 216 fellowship-sign is firing.
