- THE 'REVIVE-REVIVE FRUIT' (Devil Fruit) is named on-page (p. 6) — it gave Brook the ability to be revived once after death and live a 'second life'; while he was alive the only thing the fruit did was make him unable to swim. Brook died decades ago when his (unnamed) pirate crew met 'some very powerful pirates' and all of them were killed in this sea.
- HOW THE 'TALKING SKELETON' CAME TO BE: Brook's spirit returned from the land of the dead, but it took a full year to find his drifting body, by which time it had decomposed to bare bones; the fruit reanimated the skeleton. His afro survived because of 'very strong follicles' (pp. 6-7).
- BROOK'S SHADOW WAS STOLEN: 'a certain man' took Brook's shadow a few years ago (p. 10). Without a shadow he can no longer exist in the world of light — direct sunlight would disintegrate his body (p. 11), he casts no shadow, and he cannot be seen in mirrors or photographs. Summary
Aboard the new ship, the living skeleton Brook invites himself to dinner and tells the Straw Hats his story: he was a pirate’s musician who died decades ago in this fog-shrouded sea when his crew was wiped out, and the Revive-Revive Fruit gave him a second life — though by the time his wandering spirit found his body, it had rotted to bare bones (pp. 2-7). Brook also reveals that “a certain man” stole his shadow a few years ago, which is why he casts no shadow, cannot be seen in mirrors, and would disintegrate in direct sunlight; only the thick fog keeps him alive (pp. 8-13). Moved, Luffy offers Brook a place in the crew, but Brook declines — he must stay and wait to recover his shadow, and intends to face the thief himself (pp. 13-15). The reunion is cut short when a drifting barrel the crew picked up proves to be a lure: a giant gate slams shut and a colossal ghost-island looms out of the fog — Thriller Bark, the wandering island that came from West Blue (pp. 16-18). Brook flees across the water back to his ship, warning the crew to break out through the gate, and Nami senses real danger (pp. 18-19).
