Summary

The Great Pirate Era begins with Gold Roger’s execution speech (“My treasure? It’s yours if you can find it… but you’ll have to search the whole world!”). Cut to Foosha Village, where 7-year-old Luffy — nicknamed “Anchor” because he can’t swim — idolizes Shanks and his pirate crew, who use the village as their base. Luffy accidentally eats the Gum-Gum Fruit (a Devil Fruit), gaining rubber powers but losing the ability to swim forever. Mountain bandit Higuma humiliates Shanks at the bar; Shanks laughs it off, infuriating Luffy. Higuma later kidnaps Luffy at sea; a sea king attacks; Shanks rescues Luffy at the cost of his left arm. Before the Red-Haired Pirates depart, Shanks gives Luffy his straw hat with the promise to return it once Luffy has become a great pirate. Ten years later, Luffy sets out alone in a tiny boat, declaring to the world: “I’m going to become… THE KING OF THE PIRATES!!!”
