Etymology

Pappag (パッパグ) — the babyish reduplicated syllables are a comic coinage, but the load-bearing pun is the species kanji: starfish in Japanese is 人手 (hitode) — literally “human hand.” This is canonized in-story: Pappag’s defining gag is that he is convinced he’s human and so learned to walk and talk — a direct play on 人手 (“human-hand” → I have human hands → I’m a person). • Mention (Ch. 608): On Fish-Man Island, Pappag is a famous star designer with a huge mansion in the rich district Fishverly Hills; Camie (his “owner”) prefers her cheaper home at the bottom of the Mermaid Inlet (p. 14). Off-panel; not clearly shown — no last_appearance change.
