Jaya

Etymology

Jaya means “victory” / “glory” in Sanskrit, Malay, and Indonesian (cf. Irian Jaya, the former name of western New Guinea; Jayakarta, the old name of Jakarta, “victorious deed”). The island is Southeast-Asian-coded in design — Thai/Balinese sloped roofs and udeng headbands in Mock Town, plus Chinese round windows. The “victory/glory” meaning lands ironically: the world remembers Jaya only as the site of Mont Blanc Noland’s shame, until the arc reveals its lost half rose into the sky as Skypiea — a buried glory restored.

Jaya is also a skull-shaped island, a pirate-fiction staple. The 1978 Treasure Island anime — which invents “the skull’s left eye” as a key treasure clue not in the novel — is a likely visual source for Noland’s logbook line “I saw the gold in the skull’s right eye.” Source: One Piece Wiki (Trivia); Wikipedia, Jaya.

• Ch. 226 — Nico Robin’s purchased map of Jaya (p. 8) is the navigational spine of the rest of the arc: Mock Town (west coast), Mouth Bay, “South Grave,” and an X on the opposite (eastern) coast marking the home of Mont Blanc Cricket, “Jaya’s biggest weirdo.” The surrounding seas are the salvage territory of the “Big Ape Brothers” (Shoujou + Masira); gold bullion was recently discovered in Western Jaya (p. 20), drawing Bellamy’s interest in Cricket.
• Ch. 229 — Cricket’s island (off Jaya’s eastern coast) is where the Knock-Up Stream and Emperor Cloud are explained; the next alignment is calculated for noon the following day, just south of the island. Noland — “after all this time on Jaya” — kept his logbook here.
• Ch. 230 — The island’s jungle is shown to be home to South Birds (always point south) and dense insect life (giant tarantulas, centipedes, beetles, beehives) (pp. 6–18). A map (page 7) places the Knock-Up Stream directly south of Jaya. In ancient times the island held a City of Gold with a giant golden bell and bird/penguin iconography (per Noland’s log and Cricket’s salvage, pp. 2–5).
• Ch. 231 — The Jaya jungle’s South Bird commands an insect army (mantis, hornets, grasshoppers) that swarms the Straw Hat hunting party, forcing a retreat (pp. 2–7, 15). On the island’s eastern cape (Cactus Crag), the Bellamy Pirates raid Mont Blanc Cricket’s home, steal the salvaged gold, and beat down Masira and Shoujou (pp. 8–16). Luffy resolves to return to Mock Town to confront Bellamy before sunrise (p. 19).
• Ch. 233 — Only Mock Town (western shore) is shown on Jaya this chapter: the defeat-aftermath of Bellamy and Luffy’s reclamation of Mont Blanc Cricket’s gold (pp. 2-7), closing the Mock Town beat before the Straw Hats turn to the Knock-Up Stream.
• Ch. 287 — In the 400-years-ago Jaya flashback, a caption (p. 4) fixes the date at “May 21, 1122, the Age of Kaien” — the landfall of Mont Blanc Noland’s North Sea expedition and first contact with the Shandians, who then worshipped the serpent-god “Kashigami” and sacrificed maidens to it to lift a plague-curse.
