Firsts
  • Round 3 (Combat) of the Davy Back Fight ends in a Luffy KO win — Luffy turns Foxy's own Slow-Slow Beam against him with a mirror and lands the final blow
  • Foxy's power is consistently named on-page only as the 'Slow-Slow Beam' / 'Slow-Slow Beam Sword' (the technique); the Devil Fruit itself (Noro Noro no Mi) is NOT named in this chapter
  • The Slow-Slow Beam's effect lasts a fixed ~30 seconds — the crowd literally counts down the timer (8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1…ZERO), and the slowed target snaps back to normal speed when it expires
  • Luffy survives Foxy's barrage by keeping a mirror (taken from the Sexy Foxy's below-deck cabin) hidden in his hair/afro and reflecting the beam back onto Foxy
  • Once Foxy is slowed by his own reflected beam, Luffy lands an accumulated combo (Gum-Gum Gatling / Flail-type rush) that connects at the instant the slow wears off — knocking Foxy out and winning the Davy Back Fight

Summary

The conclusion of Round 3 (Combat) of the Davy Back Fight — the one-on-one duel between Monkey D. Luffy and Foxy “the Silver Fox.” Foxy has been winning the exchange by repeatedly freezing Luffy with his Slow-Slow Beam (the technique name; the fruit itself is not named here), then pummeling the slowed, defenseless Luffy with cannonballs, a beam-edged “Slow-Slow Beam Sword,” and his “Foxy Fighter” cannonball-riding attack. The Foxy crowd grows uneasy as Luffy, beaten down “time and again,” keeps dragging himself back to his feet — the narration frames it as “the true meaning of a Davy Back Fight… all for the sake of his comrades,” with the crew (Nami, Robin, Chopper, Usopp) screaming his name from the sidelines. After absorbing a final volley that “demolishes” him, Luffy rises once more and the two captains exchange massive simultaneous rushes (Gum-Gum Gatling-type barrages vs. Foxy’s continued beams). Then the turn: Foxy fires another Slow-Slow Beam — and Luffy reveals a mirror he had hidden in his afro (a “gift” originally slammed into his hair that he’d kept; it’s the mirror from the Sexy Foxy’s below-deck cabin). The beam reflects off the mirror back onto Foxy himself, slowing the captain. As Foxy hangs frozen, the crowd (and the Straw Hats) count down the beam’s fixed ~30-second timer in unison — and Luffy winds up an enormous accumulated rush so that every blow lands in the same instant the slow expires. At “ZERO!!” the combined impact detonates on Foxy — KA-BLAM — and Foxy is knocked out. Luffy wins the Combat round and the entire Davy Back Fight, throwing his arms up in triumph as both crowds roar. (Volume SBS Question Corner appears on the final page.)

Notable panels

  • pp. 1–2 — Title splash: “Chapter 317: K.O.” Double-illustration of the crew on laundry day — Nami holding up wet fabric on a line (foreground, p. 1), with a sea-cat-like beast lounging below; on p. 2, Sanji, Usopp, Luffy, and Chopper wringing/hanging washing in a sunny island clearing. Standalone decorative title art — not a cover serial (belongs in the LRLL one-off bin).
  • p. 3 — Single small bottom-corner panel: a sketchy crowd of Foxy-crew silhouettes watching the duel (page mostly white).
  • p. 4 — “Straw Hat Luffy pulls himself up once again!! …with fearsome power… time and again, but he keeps getting up!” Luffy, battered, rises; crew screams “LUFFY!!”; Foxy: “What kind of man ARE you…?!”
  • p. 5 — Itomimizu-style narration: “Yes, this is the true meaning of a Davy Back Fight! …all for the sake of his comrades! Tears prevent me from seeing what is before my eyes!” Crowd chants “LUFFY!!”
  • p. 6 — Foxy enraged that the crowd cheers his opponent (“Hey! How dare you cheer for my opponent!! …You just watch. I’ll settle this instantly!!”); fires the “Slow-Slow Beam Sword!!” (GWOOM!!).
  • pp. 7–8 — Foxy beats the slowed Luffy: cannon barrages, the “Slow-Slow Beam” cannonball, and the “Foxy Fighter!!” cannonball-riding super-attack (“With this speeding cannon’s megaton impact, it’ll be a complete K.O.!”).
  • pp. 9–10 — Luffy, freed as the slow wears off, dodges (“Straw Hat has been released from the beam’s effect!”); “I CAN MOVE!” — the timing/wear-off mechanic foregrounded.
  • p. 11 — Foxy slams something into Luffy’s head — “That’s a gift for you!” (VWOO!!) — the future mirror, planted; then KA-BLAM (“It’s over!!”).
  • p. 12 — “The multiple attacks demolished Straw Hat!!” — yet “He… he’s up again!!” Crew weeps and cheers.
  • p. 13 — Foxy: “I’ll keep blasting you until you fall for good!! …MEGATON NINE-TAIL… RUSH!!” Luffy answers: “GUM-GUM…”
  • pp. 14–15 — Two-captain slugfest: Luffy’s ”…GATLING!” barrage (BAM BAM BAM) vs. Foxy’s continued beams; “The fighters exchange tremendous attacks!” / “They’re both going all out!”
  • p. 16 — Foxy fires another beam (“GWAAAASH… BEA—”); both fighters suddenly stop (“They’re not moving”).
  • p. 17 — The reveal: “A MIRROR!!” A shard falls from Luffy’s hand. “It’s the mirror from your room below deck!! It was stuck in my afro!!” Foxy is now the one slowed (“DARN… SLOOOW…”).
  • p. 18 — Luffy presses the slowed Foxy (“GUM-GUM… FLAIL!!”).
  • pp. 18–20 — The crowd realizes the beam hit Foxy and counts down the timer: “Six… seven…” “This can’t be!” “Eight more seconds!” → “FIVE!!” “FOUR!!” “THREE!!” “TWO!!” “ONE!!”
  • pp. 21–22“ZERO!!” — Luffy’s accumulated rush lands the instant the slow expires: KA-BLAM (GURGH!!). Foxy is KO’d; “He did it!!” / “WHA—? BOSS!” Luffy throws his arms up in victory (DON).
  • p. 23 — SBS Question Corner (volume page 30): Robin’s “Cinco Fleurs” complaint gag, Oda’s six-pack-abs answer, “Do the Straw Hats ever fall in love?” → “They’re all in love… with their grand adventure.” (References Volume 32’s Cinco Fleurs joke; this column belongs to SBS Volume 33.)
  • p. 24 — Next chapter’s title page: “Chapter 318: CLOSURE,” carrying the cover serial “GEDATSU’S UNEXPECTED LIFE ON THE BLUE SEA, VOL. 4: ‘Goro the Hole Digger’s Dream is Hot Spring Island.’” (Captured in this range but belongs to Ch. 318.)

Open questions raised

  • What is the name of Foxy’s Devil Fruit? Chapter 317 only uses the technique name “Slow-Slow Beam”; the fruit (Noro Noro no Mi) is not stated on-page here — track the chapter that first names the fruit and mint [[Devil-Fruits/Noro Noro no Mi]] then. (The vault has no Noro-Noro fruit note yet.)
  • With the Davy Back Fight won, what becomes of the Foxy Pirates — and does Luffy take a prize from them, or leave? (Resolves forward, Ch. 318 “Closure.”)
  • The cover serial “Gedatsu’s Unexpected Life on the Blue Sea” is at Vol. 4 by ch 318 (p. 24) — confirming Vols. 1–3 ran across the preceding chapters (314–316); a dedicated Gedatsu cover-serial note should be opened.
