Chapter 235: The Knock Up Stream

Summary

On Mont Blanc Cricket’s island, the Straw Hats wait anxiously for Luffy, who is “46 minutes late” and at risk of making them miss the Knock-Up Stream window. Luffy finally arrives hauling Cricket’s recovered gold bullion (“the Hercules”), and the crew gets its first look at the reinforced Going Merry — Masira and Shoujou have rebuilt it into a “flying version” with a heavily armored hull and a new rooster/chicken figurehead. Luffy thanks Masira and Shoujou and, in gratitude, gives Cricket back his gold (“You can have my Hercules!”). Cricket, deeply moved, presses Luffy on the legend: people may laugh and call El Dorado and Sky Island silly legends that no one has proved exist — “That’s what makes it a great adventure!!” The Saruyama Alliance — Masira’s, Shoujou’s, and the Merry — set sail together at dawn, the Monkey Mountain Allied Force escorting the Straw Hats out and towing them toward the launch coordinates. To find the exact spot, they use the South Bird, a compass-bird that always faces south, mounted on the Merry’s prow. The Emperor Cloud arrives southwest hours early (“It’s only ten o’clock! We weren’t expecting it this early!!”), forcing the alliance to scramble; Shoujou’s Utan divers submerge to read the currents and confirm the giant current and the Knock-Up Stream are forming at ten o’clock. The sea rears up into a colossal whirlpool, and Masira and Shoujou commit to towing the Merry into its center. As the maelstrom roars, Luffy shouts “Sky Island, here we come!!” while Usopp screams to turn back — but it’s too late.
